I wish that some of this discussion had come at this issue from another direction, instead of being largely outraged at how white males are being characterized, or the apparent dismissal of them as a significant voting force.
The point is, they used to be _the_ demographic to woo. Now there are multiple significant and powerful others, whose needs, desires and interests the Democrats would do well to attend to. I would love to see all the rest of us being regarded as additionally significant for once. Imagine if candidates actively and genuinely considered the concerns of Hispanic women, gay Native Americans, African-American steel workers, midwestern small business owners, second-generation Hmong textile workers---and all the rest of us Americans for once.

I am one of the "white boys" this article suggest the democrat party say goodbye to. Actually this once great and noble party said goodbye to me years ago when they put McGovern up for president, and they have not even come close to giving me a reason to come back in all these years. This is not the party of my parents and my grandparents.
I am a businessman with an education degree. I have never seen a NASCAR race, I have never been coon hunting, and I don't have my car on blocks in my front yard. Sorry I don't fit your racist stereotype. I listen to Rush because he is entertaining, he is right, and he agrees with me. I watch Fox News because it is honest, especially compared to the MSM with democrat party's daily newsletter...the NY Times and the Dan Rathers of the network news.
Can the democrat party win me and other "white boys" and our wives and daughters back(Yeah, you lost the girls too)? Sure you can. Someone earlier posted that democrats should forget guns and abortion. Nonsense! My daughter has a gun permit and "packs" for safety, not for hunting. And none of us would consider voting for anyone who is lowlife enough to support abortion. Such an inhumane person can not be trusted to keep their word or to make good decisions about anything.
Consider this, except for Bill Clinton would you vote for a candidate who supports rape? Extreme you say? Not the same thing? Wrong! It is exactly the same thing. Rape is a violent act by one person to another. Murder likewise, is a violent act by one person against another. Just because an arbitrary age of an unborn baby has been selected to call it a legal killing doesn't change the fact that an innocent human baby is being killed with the blessing of what is supposed to be a civilized society.
By the way, I don't agree with those of you who call your selves liberals obviously, but I do respect those of you who proudly wear the title. It's a sham to call yourselves progressives or for candidates to try to hide who they really are.

pandering to whom?
the demographics are, no doubt, valid. But the "pandering" is questionable. This world has moved far beyond the easily categorized.... the white men with whom I work construction here in the west tend to be quite the eclectic mix of eco-minded, college educated, football watching, beer drinking, gun right advocates- often anti union and pro immigration.....
Nowadays, the architects who visit our sites would never make the mistake of believing us to be the unwashed nascar-ites of long ago. They would never talk down to us. Never assume we could not converse about green building technique , china's impact on steel prices or what the subprime and ARM nexus meant for the homebuying public.
Neither should the democrats.
Ya'll did that once and I ended up voting for Bush One. Don'e ever make me do that again please.

I was only attracted to the Democrat party for its socialism anyway. And the only thing I ever found redeeming about the Republican party was its nationalism. I will use this opportunity, which you have just made me aware of, to start looking for a political movement that combines these.

Yes, its a waste of time to get my vote. What I see when I look at the Democatic Party; I see ether the trash that litterly threw crap at my father when he came home from Vietnam. Or, the radical P.C. crowed that will not be happy till I get sent to a re-education camp. As for the union vote. Try to be retired enlisted and join a union.

Why this is stupid
This is stupid because Dems are throwing away electoral advantage. Of course, they are doing so for economic and cultural reasons.
White union workers know well from the Illegal Alien immigration proposals that Dems cannot wait to replace them with illegal aliens. Who will of course exclude and push out the white workers. Wow big surprise Dems want ethnic networks to exclude and "punish" white workers who are "uppity" and demand high wages, safe working conditions, and push back on proposals to replace their own country and language with that of another.
So no, neither Hillary nor Obama nor Edwards nor any other Dem will win White Union workers -- they will know they will be replaced by Mexicans.
Democrats electorally consist of various ethnic/racial networks plus gay/feminist/rich yuppie voting blocks. Blacks make up only 12% of the population, so there is a limit to how many votes can be found there. White voters will turn out in droves because they are VERY vulnerable to being replaced by cheap, H1-B visa Indians and Chinese and Pakistani tech workers in the white collar area and Mexican workers for things such as plumbing, carpentry, and union jobs.
Yes white men have declined as a measure of population, but they are still the largest voting block. Technically, Illegal Aliens are not citizens and cannot vote (though Dems often do have them voting).
Affirmative Action is a way to exclude non-gay white men from college, government jobs, government contracting, and other areas of economic life. "What's the Matter with Kansas" is that white men know they are discriminated against overtly by Dems.
If you are part of the monied leisure class replacing white men with compliant Mexican workers (side benefit: economically cleansing troublesome Blacks out of "hip" places with "trendier" Mexicans) is a good thing and you'll vote Dem. You get cheaper maids and gardeners. Crime of course is not an issue for gated communities.
For white men, the unrelenting hostility towards them by Dems (feminists hate men of course) is noted, particularly the massive economic threat. Naturally women, minorities, win when white men lose (and are forced out of unions, government jobs, etc.)
It's stupid to drive white men away ... but probably inevitable due to Dems economic base.
