They don't like their candidates because they're all f**king douchebags (but they still hate Hilary and Obama more)
There are several elders in my famly who are old school limited government Republicans. Straight laced as they come. Voted for Bush TWICE!
All three of them hate all of the candidates and will go with the one they hate the least -- an ignominious distinction that changes daily. The GOP candidates suck as people, but they also suck as Republicans. Not as much as Bush though (that would be, er impossible) but more than enough to have most of them resigning themselves to an 08 defeat... execept for one thing.
Most people in this country are still effing DUMB; enough to vote for Mitt Romney because he's a good looking, white-picket-fence Ken doll, a safe American stereotype in this crazy world were there be immigrants and terrorists and gay people (oh my!). As long as people overlook the whole Mormon thing (LOL)! Hey, if Massachusetts did, you gotta wonder.
If it comes down to Romney and Obama or Hillary, you bet your ass my elders and every other whitebread tool are voting for him.

The Real Reason We Don't Like Our Candidates
Mitt Romney---do we really want another governor with below average intelligence running our country? Perhaps somebody with a longer political track record and some, oh I don't know, FOREIGN POLICY EXPERIENCE, would be a good bet? Putting aside his flexible convictions, the man wears special underpants and will get his own planet when he dies. Freaky.
Giuliani---A)He's a jerk and B)He's not conservative. Please quit calling him a "moderate." His views on abortion--pro-partial birth, pro-public funding--are unpopular among all but seriously left-leaing Americans. Absolutley unelectable--as a Republican.
McCain--I think our coolness to him is rooted in self-loathing-- we blame ourselves for not giving him the nomination the first time around. Now we're in a mess. Plus, he loves immigrants and THEY TOOK OUR JOBS!
Fred Thompson--Who?
Ron Paul--Who? Oh yeah, the small government isolationist. At least he's conservative (old school).

Freddy Krueger Ray-gun
My money says the brain dead trailer park inbreeders that constitute the Fascist primary voters will flock to Freddie, another overaged mushmouthed bad actor retread, sort of a Ronnie Ray-gun without the orange pompadour. And, ya know, he might win, especially against Billary.

Choices
Ron Paul was not one of the choices,so! "None of the above" has special meaning and encouragement for the "Ron Paul" campaign.
"None of the above",in this case,is the best choice for America.
Ron Paul...all the way.

How long will it take to undo the damage to government?
Thomas Schaller adopts the premise, "With the GOP one defeat away from being reduced to minority status at every level of government..."
If only it were true. The Bush Administration's egregious appointments to federal courts will take many, many years to correct.
Rebuilding federal agencies that had a strong civil service tradition and are now re-purposed as partisan tools will also be a lengthy and difficult task.
Let's start as soon as we can, but let's acknowledge the magnitude of the damage. It would be easy to generate unrealistic expectations for improvement.

Tot capita quot sententiae
The reason for the polling on Republican fractured preferences has to do with the magnificent disintegration of the GOP into twelve separate paries, only one being the Reagan/Goldwater (less than 15% of today's GOP).
That's the good part. The bad part is that the Democrats get terminally nauseous when victory become probable and generally vomit in their shoes and, thus, snatch victory,,,etc.etc.
History, greed, depravity, the collapse of the rule of law, torture, etc have given the Democrats a historical chance to restore some of the lost elements of democracy pissed away by Bushies. Watch Pelosi/Reid/Dean/Emmanuel blow it with their terror of a progresssive agenda...not to mention Mata Clinton and her DLC shamed-to-be-Democrat turd-waffles. Next time I won't sugar-coat it.

Finally
I'm glad somebody finally mentioned Romney's magic Mormon underpants. Mormonism certainly ought to be a problem. All religions are nonsense, but Mormonism and Scientology are clear, obvious fabrications. They're very similar: started by con men who seemed to believe their own propaganda to a certain extent, they're both ludicrous, both ventures grew out of hand and essentially became their own animal.
