  • Yeah, but....

I applaud the message and the spirit of Olbernann's statement.

But, the only reason that Nixon resigned was that a bunch of Republican senators, led by Barry Goldwater, went to Nixon and told him that they themselves would vote to convict of a House impeachment. So, the Democrats would succeed in throwing him out of the Presidency. So far, I'm not sure that there is a single Republican senator who would vote to convict. Plus, I doubt that all the Democrats (Liebermann comes to mind) who would vote "aye." But for that message to Nixon, he would have stayed encamped in the White House until his term expired. It might have convulsed the nation, but Nixon wasn't kidding when he said that resigning was "contrary to every bone in my body."

If and when the Republican senators say "resign or be thrown out of office," then Bush and Cheney MIGHT go. But, since it also means turning the Presidency over to Nancy Pelosi, I think that Cheney would decide to fight until the police have to go over the fence to evict them. And, Cheney would make Dubya do the same thing.

The ultimate shame is that Bush and Cheney DESERVE impeachment and conviction even more than Nixon did.

  • Hornet Driver?

Plastic bug is more like it! It's sure is easy to claim you're Tom Cruise, but I wonder if you really are a top gun or just a wannabe?

    Go Keith Obermann!

Bush and Cheney and practically that whole administration needs to be handed over to the World Court where they will surely all get life in front a firing squad for their illegal, genocidal and profiteering war.

  • "Pigs get fat..."

Even though we still have 18 months before the seemingly eternal Bush Presidency is over, we should all lift our glasses in toast to our ‘Decider-in-Chief’, and to Messrs. Cheney and Rove as well! No matter how much you think America has suffered over the last 6 years it could have been much worse! If Mr. Bush and his associates had just been a little smarter, a little more prudent, a tad more patient, they could have ruined the country for decades to come.

They could have fueled endless wars against nebulous opponents. They could have permanently weakened civil liberties and environmental and labor laws. They could have slowly but surely placed senior officials in a few key federal agencies where they could do the most damage. They could have politicized the Department of Justice and other important bureaucracies just enough to subtly nudge close elections in their favor. Lastly, or perhaps primarily, they could have cemented policies guaranteed to accelerate the increasing concentration of wealth into the upper income brackets.

There’s on old saying that starts, “Pigs get fat….”. If the members of the Bush Administration and leading Republicans had been content to be ‘pigs’ they could have gotten enormously fat. Luckily for us, they decided to be ‘hogs’; to slurp up every drop of slop in the trough and do it yesterday! The arrogance, corruption and ruthlessness were so egregious that they became obvious to all but a dwindling band of true believers. The excesses became so great that all of the long-term objectives of the Bush Administration are now in doubt. Inadvertently, Mr. Bush may actually have protected us from something much worse. By the way, the quote ends “…but hogs get slaughtered!”.

  • Those Seventeen Words

Despite all the crap accusations of "not supporting the troops" or even "Treason" (c) Ann Coulter, essentially all Americans were happy to get rid of Saddam Hussein and would have been very pleased with a democratic Iraq that we could have pacified in a few weeks and brought our troops home with minimal casualties, and then move on to a real peace between Israel and the Palestinians, thereby permanently reducing the risk of Islamic terrorism and getting rid of a rogue state whose dictator hated us.

That was Bush's vision, that was what he was selling to us.

And if the result of that success was a permanent Republican majority, that's a risk I am willing to take. I am an American, and I want America to succeed. I have as much of a stake in this country being respected abroad and prosperous at home when Republicans are in office as when Democrats are.

Ultimately, that is what John Wayne was saying in 1960. Olbermann's point, quite simply, is that Bush has forfeited that automatic goodwill. In my opinion, many Republicans, never getting over the 1992 election, did not give Bill Clinton that same benefit of the doubt. The venom spewed over the Kosovo operation by the same people who say that any criticism of the manner in which the leaders at the top have botched Iraq puts our troops in danger takes hypocrisy to degrees beyond most people's comprehension. Oh, Kosovo succeeded. With minimal loss of lives. I guess that's the difference.

  • Amen, Mr Olbermann

But Mr. bush is a man without honor, even the low standard of Tricky Dick. bush is surrounded by henchment who are successors of the Nixon crowd with the ethics of the Plumbers.

Maybe his father can complete the final act of the family psych0-drama by walking on the stage as the bodies fall fall and the rats continue to desert the ship of state, and whisper (secretly) in his ear, "Scrub, it's time to go."

Alternate final act: Republicans aspiring to continue in public office or gaining positions of public trust and accountability from dogcatcher on up, find a new sense of courage and moral outrage (polls in the 20's) and lead the way to the impeachment of cheney bush.

  • A loud and resounding...

    Amen!

  • Re: "Security Breach"

Lovely... So if a bank has already been robbed, I can go ahead and point a gun at the cashier with impunity? Here's a fact for you: Libby DID leak Plame's name. Whether he was first or third matters not an iota, contrary to what the cons would like to believe.

It seems like the cons just LOVE to ignore what Fitzgerald said when he announced the indictment. He stated without question that the fact that indictments had been handed down against Libby for Perjury, False statements and OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE did NOT mean that there was no underlying crime committed. It meant that he was NOT ABLE to bring indictments BECAUSE Libby had obstructed justice. I know you cons have an uncanny talent at ignoring inconvenient truths, but there is a limit.

The evidence against Libby was overwhelming; read the transcripts if you don't believe me. There wasn't even the slimmest of chances that he would have been found not guilty, as long as the jury was anywhere near impartial. And both sides selected the jury; remember, that's how the system works. The system was NOT IN ANY WAY stacked against Libby...

In fact, Bush just proved that the system is heavily stacked in his favor.
