Letters to the Editor

From Iraq to Scooter Libby, Bush and Cheney have broken America's trust and stabbed this nation in the back. It is time for them to go.
  • Yeah, but....

I applaud the message and the spirit of Olbernann's statement.

But, the only reason that Nixon resigned was that a bunch of Republican senators, led by Barry Goldwater, went to Nixon and told him that they themselves would vote to convict of a House impeachment. So, the Democrats would succeed in throwing him out of the Presidency. So far, I'm not sure that there is a single Republican senator who would vote to convict. Plus, I doubt that all the Democrats (Liebermann comes to mind) who would vote "aye." But for that message to Nixon, he would have stayed encamped in the White House until his term expired. It might have convulsed the nation, but Nixon wasn't kidding when he said that resigning was "contrary to every bone in my body."

If and when the Republican senators say "resign or be thrown out of office," then Bush and Cheney MIGHT go. But, since it also means turning the Presidency over to Nancy Pelosi, I think that Cheney would decide to fight until the police have to go over the fence to evict them. And, Cheney would make Dubya do the same thing.

The ultimate shame is that Bush and Cheney DESERVE impeachment and conviction even more than Nixon did.
