Healthy, my ass Many blacks love big women, but having a rump the size of Buffie the Body's can put women at risk for disease.

  • they die sooner

But they can do the open coffin thing and look faaaabulous! :-)

  • Rob:

Actually, seeing a bit of what you look like reminded me quite vividly about the dangers of fighting on the internet.

In "real life", if you spouted the hateful nonsense that you do here, in a crowd, in front of people, I'd probably just feel sorry for you and make excuses for you.

That's just the kind of morally relativist bleeding-heart hippie I am.

If people have been unkind to you, I'm sorry that you choose to perpetuate it by being unkind to others.

    Best of luck out there,

    Emily

  • Ok. I looked at the pictures.

Are we really to believe this woman is obese? I don't see rolls of fat hanging off of her. I see a tiny waist, moderate bosom, and a large, tight butt. In fact, her butt is so tight, I doubt the truthfulness of the "I don't work out and only drink sugary drinks" statement. Isn't it possible that she's not telling the whole truth?

  • interesting that you know how the interpret the CDCs data

    better than the CDC does.

  • and if they do live longer it's probably because the stress of waiting on/for their fat asses

kills off the thin fit people ahead of their time.

  • that's an amazingly scientific theory

Are you the same anonymous whose posts never make any sense? Speaking of being lazy, could you try to come up with something other than "Anonymous" to call yourself if you're going to be shoving these opinions down everybody's throat? And can you stop being ridiculous? That's like a comeback an 8-year-old, or Ben Dover, would make.

  • speaking of being scientific why don't you and allie address the question of why the CDC can't correctly interpret their own data

you've "proven" that according to the CDCs own data only the 400 pounders and above are a problem. Elaborate on how you figured out what the CDC couldn't.

  • I've never proven or argued anything regarding the CDC.

This is Allie's post and I'll leave it to her to explain whatever it is supposed to mean. I'm just commenting on the stupidity and mostly the MEANSPIRITEDNESS of your post. Like, isn't there a way to refute some possibly shaky interpretations of data without being totally rude about it?

  • if you had ever been a fit person with a fat family

you would know that my statement was actually quite reasonable and restrained.

  • not my interpretation

No one's reinterpreting anything: that is the conclusion the CDC came to as well. Obesity is a serious health problem. OBESITY. Being moderately overweight is not a health problem.

Being underweight is also a serious health problem - in fact, it's more dangerous than being obese.

Those are their conclusions, drawn from their data.

The only contradiction here is between what you would like to be true about what a woman of healthy weight looks like and what the CDC has found to be true.

  • Obesity reduces lifespan, but being moderately overweight increases it - scientific fact, gathered by the very same people who are trumpeting the "epidemic of obesity."

so why are they trumpeting the "epidemic of obesity" then?

  • This is like a hip-hop song...

Um...Salon? Can you please use the money you would have paid Debra Dickerson for this "article" and sent it to a nice therapist for her instead? Because Debra might want to settle her personal "race issues" (and go back to journalism school) before she offers up another infuriating facile screed on "Black culture."

I mean has she EVER written an article about Black life that didn't come across as self-hating? From her multiple "Obama ain't Black, y'all" rants, to her hand-wringing about explaining her own skin color and culture to her children, to this laughable cring-worthy attempt to link a Black female aesthetic to obesity on the sheer basis of a slim big-bootyed pin-up, Dickerson's articles always seem to be about someone not fitting into or living up to her own twisted perceptions of African-American culture (hint, hint, hint, like way to project there, Debra!)

Salon, I was willing to give DD the benefit of the doubt, but I'm tired of reading what in essence conseling session. Let's put Debra on the couch and save the Black culture analysis for African-Americans who can actually make sense, please.

  • the average "not thin" but "not fat" by current "standards" woman generally weighs about 210 and claims to weigh 150

210 is not a healthy weight for an average height woman. If you accept the claimed weight as the actual weight and use THAT to judge the portrayals of women in the media I can see why you are confused about the situation. There is a scientific truth EVEN MORE CERTAIN that that fat is unhealthy and that is that FAT GIRLS LIE ABOUT THEIR WEIGHT.

  • so when the overweight majority of the female population

calls 210 150, 280 is called 200, 350 is called 250 etc. then BY THAT STANDARD a normal 120 pound woman is an 80 pound anorexic.

    >What absolutely baffles me is how people can eat heavy, fatty, food all the time and go about their business as usual....

Don't people who eat badly just feel sluggish and sick and tired *all the time*?<

Well, for one thing, there are a lot of other reasons people consider first. Stressful jobs; overwork; having a lot to do; problems; daily-wear-and-tear are all causes people are more likely to think of before food. For another thing, no, one doesn't feel badly all the time. One just figures one ate too much, not that the food itself is poor quality.

    >...do you do that to yourself if it makes you feels so bad, or do people just not realize that it's the food making them feel like that because that's the only kind of food they eat and they've never felt the difference?<

Yep. As others have noted, nutrition education and fresh-food availability aren't as easy to come by as they should be. And if you grow up not knowing this information, it's easy to develop bad eating habits and gain weight in a short amount of time. Relatedly, the "fat is evil; you are all just slobs" harassment overweight people face doesn't help any. Losing weight is a long, frustrating process no matter how hard you try, and unless you make crash-diet kind of progress, you get no points for being anything but a perfect hardbody. And why should overweight people want to listen to folks who regard them as less-than-human no matter what they do--and whose advice doesn't match up to reality? Down deep, one knows those people don't have one's best interest at heart--they just want to take out their insecurities and hatred.

  • Anonymous, you make excellent points

but they will fall on deaf ears as "reality", allie and most of the other women taking positions here ignore the empirical and statistical data and advance indefensible positions, likely because they are overweight and in denial of it or lying about their weight and health.

Fat is unhealthy, being fat is based upon specific behavior and, on occaision, genetic factors in addition. Primarily and for most people it is based upon bad habits. Behavior, including diet and exercise, makes an enormous difference. Most of these people lack the discipline or desire to do or change anything. Fat people are focused on being a minority. They are not. They are just fat and obnoxious. When there is an association called "national association to advance fat acceptance" it is pathetic. Fat people expect and demand special treatment to which they are not entitled. They are not a protected minority and should not be. Obesity unnecessarily burdens employers and the healthcare system. I have specifically not hired obese women who wished to be receptionists for 2 reasons: 1) they looked like hell, 2) they were a workman's comp claim waiting to happen and not capable of doing what a fit person can do.

Fat people's lifestyle choices should not burden or inconvenience those who are not fat, period.

It's funny to note that "reality" is obsessed with me. She always says that when someone establishes a position based upon facts, she resorts to childishness. Funny.
