Healthy, my ass Many blacks love big women, but having a rump the size of Buffie the Body's can put women at risk for disease.

  • They'll just die soon enough and the eyesore will be removed.

this is exactly the point, they won't. Smoking destroys the lungs and people die but obesity destroys they joints and these people hang around for literally decades destroying the lives of the family members or health care workers/caregivers who have to take care of them becaue of their disability.

  • On what planet...

...you do AND Ms. Roth reside, Ms. Dickerson? Buffy is in no way obese--fat-assed, yes, but in no way Norbit's wife. As a black woman myself, I struggle with my weight, always hovering around a size 10. But, I wonder if, according to your standards, if my DD bra size would relegate me to your obese category. Ms. Dickerson, a fat-ass is not obesity any more than large breasts. (Quiet as kept, I happen to envy Ms. Buffy a little.) No matter the fortune, or lack thereof?, there is in black women's propensity toward large backsides, you need to learn a little appreciation for the beauty in our bodies--in all our shapes. Instead of bashing Buffy, be a more creative "journalist" and find a better way to deliver the message that Black people--as a whole--need to take better care of ourselves. (cuz black men are no better at taking care of their prostates as we are our waistlines) Oh, and a campaign for more open access to healthcare for blacks, Hispanics, and the poor wouldn't hurt either. You need to have a sit-down with Dr. Ian Smith....

  • as long as fat people interpret an attack on obesity as an attack on them

it will be impossible to attack fat without attacking fat people. The issue is the denial BY FAT PEOPLE that there is ANYTHING WRONG with being fat. It is extremely hard work for some poeople to maintain a healthy weight and there is no way to want to do that work unless you really feel you have no choice. So there is no way that happy talk alone can deal with the situation.

  • Sandra...

    SERIOUSLY!

I mean, can you imagine being a chubby girl who's been picked on for her weight, and Tyra Banks comes on television and proclaims herself your champion to a totally apoplectic, verklempt audience who starts practically speaking in tounges of hysterical affirmation, and for just a brief moment you allow yourself to feel the shaky burgeoning of a petite bud of self-esteem, even while you know that it's coming at the hands of the same bullshit media that previously skewered you...

...and then a few months later, the SAME WOMAN basically says to you: you know what? I lied. You fat chicks are on your own, I miss looking like a supermodel, and please pass me the red wine which I think is "gross" but I'll drink so I can look "sexy"?

I work in Hollywood and rarely get worked up over celebrity antics, but she's sort of my own private anti-Christ.

Thanks for the "me too" ; )

  • Not to pick on Dickerson, but...

Okay, I don't mind Dickerson using Buffy the body as her poster child for obesity, although she was wrong to do so.

And I can ignore that she used men's magazines as the basis of "black culture", primarily because I can see her overall point.

But, must Dickerson resort to black colloquialisms towards the end of her article when she is writing to black people? I mean, does she think that she's being "down" when she writes that way? It just makes her seem more condescending.

Healthy criticism is a good thing, but Dickerson seems like a athletic prig whose conservative POV barely masks a possible hatred for most things black.

  • a question for the fat defenders

do you really think that as an ever larger share of the population suffers ever more damage to themesleves as a result of having to take care of an ever larger share of the population disabled by obesity that fat acceptance is going to go up? Really? The one silver lining in this is that the catastrophe is so immense that it is likely that effective genetic and hormonal manipulation of the situation will be developed fairly soon, because it has to be.

  • What the..?

Usually I read what others write first, but...is Dickerson saying that this pin-up babe with the buff arms and slim waist is FAT? This reminds me of a great scene in "Vacation" when Ellen Griswold catches Clark in a pool with Christie Brinkley's character and asks "Clark, do you like that girl?" He sputteringly responds, "NO!--She's UGLY!"

See, it's hilarious because it's CHRISTIE BRINKLEY, but that is a comedy film and Debra Dickerson appears to be serious in calling this hottie FAT.

<<Obese is 30% or more over desirable weight. Buffie clearly fits this, and it has nothing to do with the relative dimensions of her bottom. She's not just fat - she's obese. It's not a personal judgement.>>

I, but, em, I--WHAT?? Firstly, the clinical measure is 20%--and I should know, because I am clinically obese.

Where is the fat? I cannot see the fat! Someone alert JLo and Beyonce that they are OBESE and must report to fat camp immediately.

  • Hey, so...

Who thinks it should be illegal to smoke cigarettes?

    Raise your hand!

  • This article is a mess

She's talking about an eating disorder basically but it's message is hidden under so much crap. But you know what I don't hear everyone talking about the toll anorexics and bulemics make on healthcare, their weeks and months of hospitalization, them getting kicked to the curb when the insurance runs out and lack of therapy to get them to freaking eat, so very soon they revert to their disorder, but it's harder to pick on them because you can't always tell someone is skinny because they don't eat or purge. They have heart attacks and strokes and osteoporosis too. It's just easier to wag the finger at fat people and tell them to eat less, work out more. There are so many contributors to obesity and eating disorders and addictions in general, it's just disengenuous to say because black men like shapely women that they are the reason so many black women gorge themselves and allow themselves to stay obese. No they just aren't going to castrate themselves over something that is difficult to change unless you go on Tyra or Dr. Phil and they pay for nutritionists and excercize gurus for you. I saw the Tyra episode about women with no or really damaged teeth and they were so humilated by their smiles. What made it all better, the charity of beverly hills dental surgeons. Many problems can be solved with money, not everyone has the money or the time or can change themselves without help.

Okay, yes obesity is a problem, it's not healthy, but lets not blame the food addictions on Buffi's butt shall we, it just clouds the issue and just reeks of the skinny women make me feel bad now the big booty women make me feel bad, whah whah.

Buffi certainly has unhealthy eating habits, many people do, but part of it is just like cigarettes, alcohol, drugs and many other of the cheap comforts and pleasures low income or even middle class people engage in because they can't afford the luxuries many others have to soothe themselves. Plus lets not forget the un safe neighborhoods and the virtual world of computers and video games and the need to drive almost everywhere outside of an urban center with easily accessed public transportation and quick travel times to work or school. I can get anywhere in my city in 30-45 minutes taking public transportation and walk most places within 30 minutes, plus the hills make the walking more aerobic.

I say this because, anecdote I know, but I think surroundings and income affect people. I have a girlfriend, never ever had a problem with food, always thin in shape, her whole family really thin. Then due to circumstances, she moved into a shitty neighborhood where there were drug deals and hookers on every corner. Her apartment building was a mess, poorly maintained and managed, low security, hookers turned tricks in the basement. So she started eating more and drinking more. Sure she knew it was a problem she gained 40 pounds in about 2 years. Then her situation got better, she moved to a better neighborhood, where is was safe to ride her bike to work and she was surrounded by middle class people and in about 6 months all the extra weight was gone. I'm just tired of shaming people who have problems you don't know about and all you can say is fatty fatty you're ruining our country. It's not men's preferences that create eating disorders because from what I've experienced in my life, real men are rarely as picky and mean as they are made out to be by women who are starving themselves or dressing so that women won't comment on them or will envy them.

With all of the cosmetic advancements possible today, I understand how people can feel really poorly about themselves when they don't have the money for dental work, hair weaves, gym memberships, skin treatments and the people in the media just keep getting better looking even if the body types are expanding, who don't have the money for eating better food, can't afford to spend money on food that will spoil if not eaten soon enough, not everyone can go produce or grocery shopping daily or weekly, so say fuck it, at least Mcdonalds and donughts taste good.
