    even without knowing a name a "personal history" generally overwhelms all capacity for rational thought

    even more than the simple fact of disagreement (at least disagreement in any kind of pointed or effective way) does. I admit though that WITHOUT the personal element people are less inclined to participate, and trolls are a real problem although one woman's troll is another man's freedom fighter.
