  • Bossa nova, don't generalize

"All I can say is that I'm sorry for my gender's pathetic need to be taller by standing on women."

I'm sorry if you have as*h*l*s as a friends or acquaintances. I know this can be tough. But don't blame the whole male gender for these guys. Most men have no pathetic need to be taller by standing on women. They are normal people like you and me. It's man-bashing to generalize.

What would you say if some person said:

"All I can say is that I'm sorry for the female gender's pathetic need to marry afluent men"

Would not this be women-bashing? It's unfair to generalize.

  • Rape statistics...

They seem to be hard to pin down, rape is the most underreported crime and the true number of rapes is hard to judge. I looked at a number of sites and this one seems more credible than most even though they have an agenda (who doesn't?)

    http://www.feminist.com/antiviolence/facts.html

Fact #1: 17.6 % of women in the United States have survived a completed or attempted rape. Of these, 21.6% were younger than age 12 when they were first raped, and 32.4% were between the ages of 12 and 17. (Full Report of the Prevalence, Incidence, and Consequences of Violence Against Women, Findings from the National Violence Against Women Survey, November, 2000)

Fact #2: 64% of women who reported being raped, physically assaulted, and/or stalked since age 18 were victimized by a current or former husband, cohabiting partner, boyfriend, or date. (Full Report of the Prevalence, Incidence, and Consequences of Violence Against Women, Findings from the National Violence Against Women Survey, November, 2000)

Fact #3: Only about half of domestic violence incidents are reported to police. African-American women are more likely than others to report their victimization to police Lawrence A. Greenfeld et al. (1998). (Violence by Intimates: Analysis of Data on Crimes by Current or Former Spouses, Boyfriends, and Girlfriends. Bureau of Justice Statistics Factbook. Washington DC: U.S. Department of Justice. NCJ #167237. Available from National Criminal Justice Reference Service.)

Fact #4: The FBI estimates that only 37% of all rapes are reported to the police. U.S. Justice Department statistics are even lower, with only 26% of all rapes or attempted rapes being reported to law enforcement officials.

Fact #5: In the National Violence Against Women Survey, approximately 25% of women and 8% of men said they were raped and/or physically assaulted by a current or former spouse, cohabiting partner, or date in their lifetimes. The survey estimates that more than 300,000 intimate partner rapes occur each year against women 18 and older. • Brava, Walsh!

Good opinion piece/article. You left out a lot, so we'll (hopefully) look forward to a book-length treatment or perhaps essays on this subject from twenty men and women.

And remember, it's not true that you called Larry Summers "ditzy." That was an adjective you applied to the character of his remarks. I've honestly never before heard or read that word used in connection with one of us males. Refreshing. But jeez, now us guys gotta deal with some of the same crap the goils do.

Seriously, all the world's major religions try to emphasize the concept of the Golden Rule. It's still around, but I'm not so sure it is gaining adherents.

  • exactly

"Paglia, Dickerson and the writers of Broadstreet are provacateurs - purposely writing to incite and provoke." Salon does this on purpose, to generate clicks to generate ad revenues, so let's stop pretending this is all about civil debate. Some letters will be poorly-written, by anyone's standards.

The broadsheet writers are the very definition of pot-boiling, yellow journalism. They're equivalent to ambulance chasing TV "news" crews which generate revenue for the station because stupid viewers feel compelled towards scandal and violence.

They're low budget, high volume, provocateurs to generate clicks and ad revenue from idiots. Habitually reading them is a character flaw and lowers your IQ.

The vast majority of what Salon posts is now garbage, with a few standout exceptions. The market has spoken I guess. That, or Salon editors simply can't do better.

  • Reality check: It's the 19th century?

Misogyny continues amongst educated professional males in the Western world, in the 21st century. Read the forums of social-networking sites, including those with high-end demographics: Women who post strong opinions about most anything, or verbally kick the gonads of some guy who deserves it, are often crucified and their femininity questioned. Men are still threatened by strong women, and I really don't know why. Perhaps such men feel safe and secure scrunched down behind a monitor, punching at the keyboard.

  • Oh man, what times this must be repeated?

"Men are still threatened by strong women". Please say "SOME men are still threatened by strong women". Don't generalize and blame the whole male gender for some things some as*h*l*s do.

Would it be fair to says "Wome are still after the rich men". It's unfair to generalize

  • some people will believe anything

Fact #1: 17.6 % of women in the United States have survived a completed or attempted rape.

So 1 of every 5.6 women have been raped or been the victim of attempted rape, and no criminal charges were filed?

How clueless does a person have to be to believe that?

To justify such claims you'd have to consider any and every sexually uncomfortable situation as "rape" which completely dilutes the meaning of the word. It's also especially absurd considering the vast majority of these supposed "rapes" occur with ex-sexual partners, where there is a great deal of ambiguity and potentially hostile feelings.

    Show some sense people.

  • No Name Given

No name given, you are a MYSOGINIST.

Everybody nows than raped women are 120% of the world female population. Everybody who denies that is a mysoginist.

So 1 of every 5.6 women have been raped or been the victim of attempted rape, and no criminal charges were filed?

And only about a third of those rapes are reported.

Fact #4: The FBI estimates that only 37% of all rapes are reported to the police. U.S. Justice Department statistics are even lower, with only 26% of all rapes or attempted rapes being reported to law enforcement officials.

    http://www2.ucsc.edu/rape-prevention/statistics.html

Only 2% of rapists are convicted and imprisoned. (US Senate Judiciary Committee 1993)

22% of females raped are under the age of 12 years; 32% are 12-17 years old; 29% 18-24 years old; 17% over 25 years old. 83% of those raped are under the age of 25 years old. (National Institute of Justice 1998)

77% of rapes are committed by someone known to the person raped. (Bureau of Justice Statistics 1997)
