99 Cowards and Russ
I could not agree more with my Senator on this issue. While I certainly have been against the war from day 1, I am not a pacifist nor would I want to precipitously withdraw from Iraq. However, when you see U.S. senators arguing about whether to use the word escalation or augmentation in their weak resolution while another group of young people dies on the streets of Iraq, it is enraging and disgusting. Go Russ.

I will put my signature at the bottom of this
...and many, many other opinions and resolutions of Mr. Feingold.

PS- Hey, Russ...I just heard Favre is coming back for another year...good work! Go Packers!

You are leading the way
Thank you, Senator! While I love Sen. Levin, who represents my state in the Senate, you are of course right that this resolution is a toothless rebuke at best and tacit support for the status quo. But it's a small, timid first step. You were way out there in the lead on your opposition to the war, and the American people are catching up to you faster than the overly cautious Beltway insiders. Keep leading, and they will follow you, and soon. The tide is turning.

Feingold Rocks
While I understand Feingold's decision not to run for president and why he probably wouldn't be elected, he is the only politician deserving of the position. He is clear and honest and intelligent. Best leader in the country right now!
-
Russ rocks!
However this turns out, history will show this guy to be a true American hero. His principled efforts to rein in the neo-con infection is putting him up there in my mind with MLK and RFK.
Sorry for writing pure fan mail, but damn I wish he was running for president.

Maybe Russ doesn't take campaign contributions from the MIC
Of course Feingold is right here. The problem is that both parties are owned and operated by the military industrial (congressional) complex. They support the campaigns of politicians from both parties. I don't think Senator Feingold takes money from them which is why he is free to speak the truth. Listen up folks, the oil companies and our current government are ONE AND THE SAME. We need to flood our Senators with e-mails urging them to support Feingold''s postion. We need to set aside some money to bring them ALL home and then we need to do that. It is surely good news that we have a Russ Feingold in the Senate. Thank you Wisconsin!

Feingold for President
I was deeply disappointed when Feingold said he would not run for President.
Feingold is the kind of leader we need now. He is, for my money, far and away the most impressive person in the entire field of potential presidential candidates. The fact that he is not running is a blot on our system. The fact that our system favors cowardly or demogagic mediocrities suggests that our system of selecting Presidents is badly flawed...(although from the view of corporate America it works fine, I know).
Feingold is right, the resolution is worse than a sham. But with the Dems desperately trying to woo idiot swing voters, and the GOP trying to shore up its fractured wing-nut base, we can't expect any political courage at all for the next two years. And probably beyond.
I sometimes fear the American experiment is in its last days. That we'll end up with an out-and-out oligarchy, with the fig-leaf of "democracy"---something more cruel than we have now.
Sen. Feingold--you have my vote. Now and forever.

Why...
doesn't he run? His views apparently have the support of the populace based on the last elections.
Here's why, because it's easy to stand on the side and throw out an opinion from time to time. It's a lot harder to make that opinion stick and get people to follow.
The only chance you have of becoming President is running and he just doesn't have the leadership skills to do that.
-
Russ
Thank you, Senator.
Since you decided not to run, the headline I'm looking forward to (beside "TROOPS COME HOME FROM IRAQ") is
PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE GORE SELECTS FEINGOLD FOR VP
I'm not sure DC has room for all the cojones on that ticket, but what a miraculous day that would be.

Russ is the Man
Russ Feingold is already marginalized by mainstream media which for many is a badge of honor. I am still looking at a strategy where mainstream media is marginalized. Can we?
-
Joe:
"Why...doesn't he run? . . .
Here's why, because it's easy to stand on the side and throw out an opinion from time to time."
You do see the irony of that statement, don't you? I mean, exactly what have you done for this country? But you sure love to throw out your opinion at every opportunity.

I just called my senator
and asked that he support Senator Feingold's proposal to cut off all funding for the war and Senator Kennedy's proposal to prevent the escalation. You should too.
Do it for yourself. Do it for your kids. Do it for the spirit of Molly Ivins.

I disagree...
While I have opposed the Iraq was since the beginning, I must respectfully disagree with Senator Feingold.
A time table for US troop withdrawal should only be proposed if it is accompanied by commitments from other countries in the region to supply troops to fill the void created by departing US forces. The Iraqi army is obviously not prepared to stand up to the insurgents let alone the militias and to allow the militias free reign in Iraq would be as disastrous a decision as the decision to invade was.
I would ask Senator Feingold to detail what his “long-term strategy for mitigating the mess left behind by this war” is before he proposes the time table. I ask this because he is correct when he says it is a mess, it is our mess. And to abandon the Iraqi people to kind of violence we have seen day to day without a well thought out plan for peace/reconstruction/security in the region would be the final reprehensible decision is long line of American blunders.
So while I welcome his candor in laying out his opposition to the Warner-Levin resolution, we could certainly use more of that candor in Washington, I would appreciate the details of a plan for how we will be dealing with our “mess” once we leave.
