Are you sure?
"incompetence is not an impeachable offense"
Are you sure? There's no question that a disabled President can be removed from office (ie, there wouldn't be a 'regency' with a comatose elected President). It's assumed that if the President refused to perform the minimum tasks that everyone expects of his office, he would be removed by Congress.
The only objection that anyone has in principle to removing Presidents is that it shouldn't be a political act that usurps the will of the electorate (plus a vague notion that acknowledging fallibility undermines the credibility of any elected government). But no one seriously believes that electing an incompetent President is like being stuck with an unreliable car after the warranty expires. If the elected Republican reps and senators had sufficient demand from their own constituencies, no one else would object to impeachment on principle.
"The Constitution is not a suicide pact."

It's Texebonics!
And then he congratulated "the Democrat party".
Sincerity? Bush? Are you high?
Maybe he's just like the idiots who couldn't stop using 'colored'.

Indulge my cynicism
Things are working out just fine for GWB.
He and his Republican cohorts have done a great job of installing incompetents into every imaginable governmental job. They've dismantled as much of the progressive elements of government as they could, and hobbled the rest. They've stuck the nose of government into areas that Americans are uncomfortable with. They've put their thumb on the scales of justice so that people don't feel like they can get a fair shake in the courts. They've misspent and diverted billions of dollars of our treasure. They've watched as good jobs leave our country.
Many Americans look at all of this and have concluded, with the help of media controlled by ideologues, that government is the problem. They've been shown by this administration that government is only capable of screwing things up, and it's best if we don't encourage them. Americans have lowered their expectations of government.
This plays right into George's hand. If government itself is bad, less of it is good. Why waste your time participating in a totally disfunctional exercise? So, many Americans have become disengaged. And most of these disengaged Americans are most likely supportive of a progressive agenda.
Who cares if government doesn't work if you've got power and money? Less government, lower taxes, fewer regulations, "every man for himself" works GREAT if you're on the top and live in a gated community, paid for by your inheritance, with your kids in private schools.
Not so good if you work for a living, breathing polluted air, working hard for less than a living wage, unsure of the future of your job, your healthcare, your retirement, your kids education and their future.
Expect more of the same from George. He will do whatever he can to prevent any meaningful improvements for the middle class, to the benefit of the aristocracy. It will take a generation of hard work just to get back to where we were before he got started.

The Little Things
For all of its apparent shine, the tarnish still shows. 47 million citizens without health insurance and a grand plan that will take care of about 12% of them is not what I'd call stellar. The list goes on.
One thing I noticed while W. was spewing last night was the vice-president. As he sat behind W., he seemed to be popping something into his mouth. I figure it was either Altoids to overcome the bad taste of the address, or nitro to ease the chest pains. Either way, it was telling.
I'll consider taking this president and his administration seriously when he realizes (or somebody from within teaches him) that the word is nuclear, not NUCULAR.

Wesley Autrey's Moment
50 minutes of insufferable Bush Blather. But one moment made me feel good about America, and that moment belonged to Wesley Autrey. What character, what charisma, what life! God bless that wonderful man.
Smart move of Bush to include him -- well, except that the unabashed humanity of Autrey stood in shockingly glaring contrast to the inhumanity of this administration.

BUSH'S APPROVAL RATINGS SOAR AFTER STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS
Just one day after the majority of Americans said they would feel safer if Osama bin Laden were running the country, President Bush is once again considered to be a smart, determined and caring leader, according to a top likeability pollster. “Radio listeners heard the uproarious applause he received, and television viewers saw the countless standing ovations he got from Congress and figured they couldn't all be wrong,” she said. Apparently, even his harshest critics were sold. “Did you hear him talk about energy independence? He’s a lean, green environmental machine,” proclaimed Al Gore. “It turns out he wants to save Darfur after all,” a teary Kofi Annan declared. “Finally, he’s going to make healthcare affordable for all Americans,” said an impressed Hillary Clinton. “I'm just glad he can't run for a third term, or I'd be in real trouble.”

To Bobby G and Pablo
This is a far more diverse nation than most others. It is very difficult to reach a national consensus on anything. I have nothing against socialism where you can get 90% of the citizens to agree on some social issue. I am somewhat peculiar, as are millions of others, in wanting to control my own health spending. I believe that we can get some form of catastrophic coverage for all citizens in the next ten years. California, New Jersey, Massachusetts and others will experiment and figure out what works. Maybe all states will enact some form of catastrophic protection for their citizens. I, and others like me, do not want our hands held by a bureaucracy. I believe that going to doctors leads to unnecessary treatment. All of the single-payer systems use queuing to control access. My time is more valuable than standing in a queue. Twenty percent of the citizens spend eighty percent of the health car money. They might need socialistic hand-holding, since most of their problems result from poor life style choice. I am on Medicare and it really pisses me off that a third of Medicare is for the medical problems of Type 2 diabetics, a completely avoidable problem.
