Salon Interview: Camille Paglia

Our fave pop intellectual weighs in on the Dems' gift to Ann Coulter (Foley), why Condi's success matters to feminists, and Bob Woodward (yawn).

The letters thread is now closed.

Yes!

Camille, you sure are some Democrat! Talk radio, Matt Drudge's "great credit," ignoring the GOP cover of Foley's crudities ... that'll show those Republicans! Maybe "our" party can make a 30-second spot slamming those bastards with Hadrian's Antinous, Greek sculpture and Plato's dialogues, as in the Symposium. Come clean, lady ... you're a wingnut with pretensions.

fave pop "intellectual"

Forgets that brilliant Condi lied to the 9/11 Commission, lied about the aluminum tubes, lied about not ever having dreamed that airplanes could be used as missiles. How is that important to feminists? To show that women can lie too?

Paglia? Huge Yawn.

I've never understood the appeal of the woman. Everything she says in here is trash. Her "surprising" and "quirky" perspective, limp liberals, is that she despises you. She loves kissing the iron boot of the conservative. Every single thing she says in here is wrong and stupid, and yet some of my compadres lap it up. Why do we "depend" on the success of Condi? She's probably the most incompetent Secretary of State in my memory. Are we supposed to lighten up because she's a woman? Because she's black, for God's sake? She's a fool who works for a monster.

How about the Good Soldier Powell? He's a good man, if he wasn't working for Simon LaCheney.

All this foolish prattler does is repackage the stupidest conservative pap and present it to you as the "hard truth." She's a huge con artist, nothing more.

But the weaker-minded among us seem to lap it up. I guess that's why we're going to have Governor Schwarzenegger, who has managed to bamboozle the center and the weak-minded liberals.

Happy New Republic to ya.

I second that, tangerine!

Why anyone gives a shit what Paglia has to say at this point is beyond me.

I'm trying to finish this article ...

I used to enjoy reading Ms. Paglia's writing. Her immersion in Greek history and mythology gave her almost a mystical view of the beltway.

Here that sensibility gives her a homogeneous view on history as if America is one united nation in a world of many other united nations. Her understanding of Chomsky and the immigration issue shows a decided lack of sensitivity to poverty and its effects on societies, both intra-society in terms of the great rift in resources within America and inter-society in terms of the great rift in resources on a global scale. She speaks as though everyone in America lives in Pittsburgh and is doing reasonably well now that everyone has recovered from the fall of the steel industry. Still, I pressed on, trying to read her somewhat entertaining tirade. This is where she lost me ...

"Streisand is a great artist"

All in all, it seems as though Ms. Paglia is as distracted and disoriented as the rest of the American (center) left. The only difference is that she is also clearly angry.

Boring

Why Salon even has conversations with Paglia is beyond me.

Her obsession with conversative talk radio is telling.

What's more repelling is her constant comment, "but I am democrat" now let me go off on every last one of them for being wimps.

Her sweeping generalizations of liberals as northeastern elites comes right out of the playbook of Rush Limbaugh.

She is just boring and anybody who has such an obsession with talk radio obvious doesn't have a life.

Gee, could we get some fact checking here?

Which liberal Democrats are constantly 'sniping' at religion? Which liberal Democrats have EVER sniped at religion? Could we have quotes and names, please?

And did the Democrats really have anything to do with 'Foleygate?' Seems like it was the media that went crazy over Foley, not the Democrats.

I do agree that Foleygate doesn't help the Democrats at all and the Democrats should have put Iraq front and center in this campaign.

Camille Paglia is a fraud

Camille Paglia is an intellectual like Christopher Hitchens is a teetotaler. She tries to insulate herself against criticism by always claiming that she's a Democrat, but that's bullshit. In every interview, all she can do is spew hatred at Democrats and liberals while praising Rush Limbaugh and other right-wing charlatans. Paglia is a pseudo-intellectual dittohead of below-average intelligence and far-below-average integrity who has become famous not for her would-be intellectual acumen but rather for her relentless self-promotion. She belongs in that rare class of persons such as Hitchens, Dr. Joyce Brothers and Geraldo Rivera -- people who will do or say anything, no matter how cynical or crass or dishonest, to call attention to themselves. Screw you, Paglia -- you never fooled me, you right-wing toady.

You're Never Bored Reading Paglia

I appreciated her take on the ineffectiveness of the democratic party, even agreed with her, sort of. Then I think, well how many republicans actually are out there walking the walk? Delay, Hastert, Ney, Mr sell out himself: McCain, Powell, I think I can swim with the big sharks: Rice, or maybe Jeb Bush??? Hilary may be the most qualifying, or cloying, of politicians to date, but she has the guts to do it and she sure is studying her ass off before finals. But, I dont think that this is a political issue. I think it may be our insular nature that is biting us on the butt. As an example: what country lies between Afghanistan and Iraq? Had to look it up? Insular. Maybe we are this way because our country is huge. Look at England on a map, krikeys, I think Illinois is longer. If your country is that small, maybe you have to be more aware of those around you. Trade, self preservation, tulips, etc. So, lets work on the insular nature of America, and Americans as one of the basic building blocks of getting out of this. And yes, let's not duck religion. It is here, it is there, it is everywhere. Your intellect might like to take umbrage at your internal belief systems (liberal) or vice versa (conservative), but ultimately they better learn to co-exist. And we better learn about religion and history by pulling an all nighter cause the zealots out there are really out there. (I mean that as a pun but also geographically). Plus, lots of them want to kill us. Thanks as always to Camille for reminding us we have brain cells and they are fun to use.

P.S. France may think they are the center of the universe, but they no longer are...I paraphrase you, now insert America in lieu of France...
