I have mixed feelings about releasing those tapes. On one hand I can fully understand Garrison's rational for supporting their release, and I know if my last moments were somehow recorded before I was murdered, I'd want other people to see or hear it, to be upset and angry that such a violent crime was committed. On the other hand, of course, seeing or hearing such things does make me very upset and angry and I don't want to go through life feeling continuously outraged at the horrendous things some people do to others.
I am an atheist, but sometimes I really wish there was a truly just and allpowerful god who would punish all the hominid monsters who cause so much suffering. But there isn't, and in any case wouldn't such a god be better if he could prevent the horrible things from happening in the first place rather than punishing the miscreants? Some say the fact that a few people survived the collapse of the towers is a "miracle". Bunk. It was improbable but not impossible; not miraculous at all. A genuine miracle would have been if those 19 murderers had all been turned into toads the instant before they tried to hurt anyone. God, however, did no such thing. He's not to blame, of course. Superman didn't save the day either.
We're on our own and the best those of us who have the capacity for genuine empathy and care for the wellbeing of others is to keep trying to promote reason, sanity and compassion before irrational hatreds, fears and even excessive greed leave all of human civilization a smoking ruin.
At times this country's government treats its citizens as if we are children that need to be protected, as if we need a reassuring bedtime story to keep us from thinking of the monsters in the closet. Except, we aren't children, the monsters are real, and we have a right to know the ugly truths if we might someday have to come face to face with them, just as the victims of 9/11 so horribly did.
Thank you, Mr. Keillor, for pointing out this truth.
Those dead people cannot speak, you have so eloquently spoken for them. They deserve to be heard by our politicians especially the Bushies who let this happen including people like Patrick Fitzgerald when he was an attorney for the city of New York.
Was he chosen because he is compromised and can be controlled by the Repubs or will his investigation actually come up with something, we will be watching.
GK your article put a big lump in my throat and I said a prayer for the families left behind.
I am not able to read anymore about the tragedy because it is unbearable to me. I can't begin to imagine what the families must feel like.
Living on the West Coast, I remember the strange, eerie feeling of 9/11/01. There was no visible manifestation of ruin or disaster when we looked out our windows, but we all knew the world had changed irrevocably and for the worse that day.
I think the people who called 911 that day deserve to be heard now. They were after all, calling for help. But even more importantly, I think the current occupant ought to HAVE to hear them, and that goes for Cheney, also. Then they can come out and TRY to explain, if they can, WHY the President "Doesn't spend much time worrying about bin Laden." If they can. Excuse me, but what happened to "9/11, we shall never forget?" To date, it was the one statement George Bush has ever made that I've agreed with.
Why on earth does Bush have such a reputation for being "strong on terror" when he ignored the threat from Al Qaida for the first nine months of his presidency despite credible warnings until he couldn't ignore it any longer? When an emergency is hot, the president is not. Whether we're being attacked by terrorists or attacked by mega hurricanes, the president is always either on vacation or flying around in an airplane, of no use or help to anyone. Flat-footed, slow moving ineptitude and posturing speeches are his style. Most of his actions since then have placed us in more danger of attack, not less.
And why, only a week after a second, serious attack was prevented by the diligence of British Police and intelligence work, and at a time when people might wonder when the president is going to get BACK to concerning himself about bin Laden, is the real and current news being buried under a flood of headlines about Jon Benet Ramsay--again? I'm sure her family would like to see her killer caught, but is she really worthy of a national news blitz?
Garrison, Bravo! I'd love to see you elected president. Although being the next president after Bush will be a hellish job, due to all the damage he's inflicted thus far. No sane person would want that job, and I'm not sure I'd wish it on anyone.
Just wanted to note that despite strong opinions on both side, this thread has not disintegrated, it's simply been articulate, passionate, and intelligent...
Garrison, you clearly bring out the absolute best in everyone. No snarky backbiting here!!
Salon, please, more Garrison!!!!
