Making Colbert go away

The docile press corps was offended when Stephen Colbert dared to expose Bush's -- and their own -- feet of clay. But how to respond? Voilà: "He wasn't funny."

The letters thread is now closed.

"Missing the mark"

Eileen B: "I've repeatedly watched the video and read the transcript of Mr. Colbert's presentation. It missed the mark. Where was the irony, sarcasm and ridicule. Waffling back and forth in a sheepish attempt to mock the president's and the press's wafflings simply isn't any of those things... What we 'got' was simply a lack of true committment to the fine art of satire. And that's the word."

Well, gosh, Eileen, maybe Colbert should have practiced more, and fixed some of the flaws. Maybe he should have run the script past more educated writers and editors to achieve the level of perfection that pleases you.

Or maybe he should have simply stayed home, knowing that he would ultimately let you down. But then that raised the question, Eileen - Why didn't you get up there in front of the president and 2500 reporters and deliver your idealized version of satire yourself?

Loved the subtleties!

Loved the one about the glass being only 1/3 full (representing the people who now approve of Bush's job) where Colbert said he wouldn't want to drink that and that the last third in the glass is usually backwash. Ha! Also the one where he welcomed Mayor Ray Nagin from New Orleans (the chocolate city) to Washington DC and then said DC was a chocolate city with a marshmallow center and a graham cracker crust of corruption - a Mallomar he called it. Then the clicker was when he said it was a "seasonal cookie". Hopefully he's right!

Speaking truth to power

Had to weigh in on this one. After viewing and reviewing (after I caught my breath) the tape, I could only come to one conclusion: damn, that was the bravest thing I've ever seen. What Colbert did was so stunning, so courageous, so audacious. He got up in front of a room full of smug, self-satisfied people who were NOT going to like what he had to say, with the President himself sitting mere feet away from him, and he did this marvelous, stupendous thing, and he did not flinch, not once, even though he had to know they were going to loathe him for what he said, that the fallout was bound to be brutal. Talk about Daniel in the lions' den. This was, truly, speaking truth to power. No, of course if wasn't FUNNY. How the hell could it possibly be FUNNY? But it was sublime. Thank you, thank you, Stephen Colbert.

Someone Finally Said it

Jesus, woman, you got it right! Finally! Colbert "was not funny..and we know funny" (ok, a coupla lines were funny). The devestation he wrought is incomparable. The president, his political ass kissers, the press, the press ass kissers. No one was spared. The jaws of life will not be able to pry apart the buttocks to get to the stick that was shoved so mercilessly up its collective, self-important keister. I'm kvelling here!

Colbert Rocks

Let's take the dimensions now: the man deserves a statue in the park. Check out other liberal takes to see how unanimous the praise is:

We Love You Man!

We Love You Man!

What can I say more than what already has been said before me?

Stephen we love you man, I'll be sad to see you go when they railroad you off your new show. You'll definately be able to find work on an obscure AM radio talk show however. Thats where they like to keep comedic-jouralistic-actor types like you that talk badly against the powers that be.

I hope I'm wrong and this will turn into a paradigm shift in how the media covers the illegal activities (9/11 complicity, illegal NSA wiretapping, treasonous outing of clandestine CIA agents, illegal preemptive war with Iraq, signing bills into law without congressional approval etc....) of our current administration, but from what I'm hearing out there so far in response to Mr. Colbert's impromptu roast of the President and the Main Stream Media talking heads is that this is not going to be the case.

All I can say is that if Stephen Colbert ends up having an unfortunate car accident or an tragic accidental throat slashing, we know who made the order Mr. President.

Some of you may think I'm off base on this but when you piss off a serial killer like Mr. President, people end up missing, ask John O'neill former FBI agent, he just had a plane ran into his office the first day on the job, after pissing off the administration.

Just listen to the reaction to the crowd... THERE WAS NONE! They didn't know weather to snarl, smile, laugh, cry, run, or wet their pants! They were scared shitle$$!

Mark My Words!

When the shit hits the fan, all of you talking heads out there covering up the dirty deeds of the current administration that includes you as well Salon we know who you are, and there is a growing list, you as well as your superiors will be held to the same accountability as the evil that you falsly promulgate.

The truth movement is growing at a rapid rate and sooner or later your going to have to kill us all or face the dark days that you have coming to you!

That is of course if you don't change your pathetically cowardly ways.

God Bless,

SEAN

What is everyone smoking.....

And can I have a hit. Apparently, the liberal left is either high on pot, alcohol or their self-proclaimed intelligence.

Mr. Colbert made an attempt at satire during the Washington Press Corp dinner. If anyone would bother to read the transcript, they will find that Mr. Colbert used slight of hand to manipulate his already staunch supporters into believing he performed brilliantly. It was like seeing the Virgin Mary's head in your grilled cheese sandwich when in reality it was simply burned bread.

I can not believe how much has been "read into" what he actually said. It wasn't all that profound or brilliant. After he made each of his points, he rambled about nothing that had anything to do with it. It reads like he wrote it on his way to the party, a work in progress.

Maybe his fans heard what they wanted to hear, saw what they wanted to see, and really haven't bothered to take a closer look for fear of the idea, that finding a flaw in the work means that you are no longer a fan.

Come on, he wasn't all that and a free parking pass. I've heard much more slicing satire on the Bill Maher show than I've ever heard on The Colbert Report and Maher, an admitted stoner, does it more succinctly. Mr. Colbert, take some notes for next time and may you be more worthy of the praise in the future.
