Impeach Bush

The man was lost and then he was found and now he's more lost than ever -- and he's taking us into the darkness with him. It's time to remove him.

The letters thread is now closed.

I doubt it will happen

We don't 'do' accountability in this country any more. What we do is we drift along until something breaks and then we scramble to fix it.

My prediction: if and when the wheels finally come off in Iraq, Mr. Bush along with Mr. Cheney will be asked to resign. A military emergency will be declared, a general will be put in power, a draft will be instituted and stiff taxes will be imposed to pay for a redoubled effort in Iraq, all in an effort to save our skins in Iraq and our standing in the world.

The other possibility is that we will just drift along until the next president is forced to pull the troops out of Iraq in an embarrassing rout. That president may be more likely to face impeachment than Mr. Bush. The recrimination for a defeat in Iraq will be something awful to see, and it might come down more on liberals and Democrats than on the Republicans and the Bushies.

I just don't see any way this war can end well for us.

Impeach Cheney First

Why do those of you who are sure impeachment won't happen with a Republican Congress think that impeachment shouldn't be called for?

Why do those of you who think Cheney or Hastert would be worse think that impeachment shouldn't be called for?

Why do those of you who are skewed enough to not understand Keillor's satire think that impeachment shouldn't be called for?

Why do those of you who think no one else reads this website think that impeachment shouldn't be called for?

Haven't crimes been committed?

Now, if ever

If we choose not to impeach, for whatever reasons, we essentially choose to give up the process of impeachment. If not for these current abuses, when would it ever apply? Any future target of impeachment would point to Bush as precedent and measure, and claim that the bar of egregious behavior has been lowered so low as to be eliminated altogether.

And ironically, if impeached, Bush's strength would be that he admits to, even boasts of, everything he's done. It makes for a maddeningly slippery discussion. He did, after all, promise to run America like a business, and he has. Many if not most workplaces, especially in "prestige" fields like law, are hotbeds of pretense, bullying, misrepresentation, denial and grandstanding. He did deliver on that one promise.

It's Time Someone Speaks Up...

At last, someone of notable/quotable stature has voiced what many of us have been feeling for some time. If WE don't take our country back soon, our great nation will NEVER live down the tyranny and mockery created by the President and his 'choir boys'.

I appreciate your honesty and willingess to say in a public forum what many of us can't.

IQ and the Presidency

The most egregious issue concerning this president isn't a matter of politics or ideology, it's the guy's grey matter. I often remind my conservative-minded friends that eight years ago, they had an opportunity to nominate a clearly qualified conservative, John McCain. Senator McCain's politics is certainly far to the right of mine, however he is at least QUALIFIED to be a president, possessing both intelligence and a good working knowledge of the world. I would never in a million years vote for John McCain, yet I often imagine how much better off America might be right now had John McCain and not George Dubya become President.

it won't work

Impeaching Bush is a most attractive idea but it won't work.

About 40% of the electorate still think he is doing a credible job. These are the "faith" people. For them to even suggest impeachment would mean that they made a bad choice in electing him. Their faith in him would not seem credible if they suggested impeachment. They would never submit to the idea their "Christian boy", who receives messages from God, makes mistakes. God save us from born again Christians and reformed drunks!!!

What is the high crime?

Well, because I know that you, Garrison, are above all a serious person, I seriously take your argument into account.

On the high-minded side of things we have to decide if he has committed a high crime. His justice department has given him justifications for things you have mentioned and I'm not sure how that works in law and whether the evidence would stand up.

But besides the high stupidity, incompetence, insensitivity, incuriosity, and the bludeoningly ignorant management override of every working group that ever knew anything about anything that has faced us in the last 5 years...

He clearly contorted evidence to coerce Congress to allow him to bring the country to war when the actual evidence wouldn't have allowed an invasion, under international law. That is as high a crime as was ever committed by a president.

OUT! DAMN SPOT...OUT NOW!

Garrison, thanks. For an article that is apt; though it comes seven? years too late. This is a man who believes in Capital Punishment. Yet where is his?

Bush is a spot that needs to be rubbed out. He is a stain that needs to be removed. The law allows for his impeachment.

And never mind the naysayers. The people who say it "cannot be done." It can, and it shall. Congress will damn well do whatever we as a people say needs to be done. It's been done before -- it can be done again.

We need a rebellion against the new aristocracy. Like the Boston Tea Party. We can then call ourselves the N.U.S.A. The New United States of America.

I'm in. Party the revolution.

Impeach Bush

Thank you for speaking up. Especially to the contingency who embrace you. But in your article, I feel you are way too soft on this subject. The phenomenon is - that Bush is un-impeachable. Can someone-anyone expose that? No one was able to take McCarthy out until the damage was exhausted. No - one is taking Bush out, when the evidence against him is irrefutable. Lies: about the weapons of mass destruction / erosion of civil liberties / wire-tapping / torturing prisoners - the list goes on. Will anyone be able to take down this teflon administration? Or is it going to take a blue dress? And what does that say about the value's in this country?
