In the interest of simple journalistic integrity, I think you should have published the Danish cartoons, and let the chips fall where they may. That said, I also think it is a separate issue and has no bearing on the events at Abu Ghraib.
One reason for publishing these pictures can be seen in the letters you've received. Correction of public mis-perception!!! We still have people insisting it's not torture and the equivalent of fraternity hazings. Last time I checked, the victims of fraternity hazings chose to be there, are rarely cut, raped or sodomized and almost never killed, all of which transpired at Abu Ghraib. And it has also been widely documented that most, over 90%, of these people were not terrorists or insurgents, but petty criminals. People also forget that we are no longer content to do our own torturing, but are farming it out to other countries where we maintain secret holding facilities, that is until someone leaked that information, but I digress. Torture has become a part of our natonal policy and violates everything we claim to stand for and that many have fought and died for. Until we as a nation stand up and decry this policy we are all complicit and no, 9/11 does not give us Carte Blanche to do as we please around the world.
Oh yes, us poor picked on Americans who had terror brought to our front door on 9/11. Nevermind that we've killed ten times as many innocent Iraqis and Afghanis since then, nevermind that it was, and still is in many cases, our national policy to prop up Hussein, the Shah of Iran, and numerous other murderous dictators. Yeah, nevermind all that, they hate us for our freedoms, pass me a freedom fry, Yum.
It is a statment in itself that you should have to defend your decision to publish these photos. We should all be appalled.
Great job congradulating yourself on your papers courage to reprint 3 year old images to further inflame Moslems against America. Your timing is perfect. Funny that I can't recall you printing the Danish cartoons or standing with the Danes during their own attack by Moslem fanatics. This has become typical of American mainstream media, and has resulted in your total irrevelency. This is not courage, it is cowardly fear from the Islamic nut cases. Please don't ever talk about free speech when you practice your own pc censorship.
Where are the photos of the decapited American's and Westerners that continue to be kidnapped and shown to be killed live on the internet by the terrorists? Where is the balance in your reporting? If you show one side, why not show all sides...probably because you are hypocrites, maybe?
Actually, GHDorf, there are a lot of horrendous things being done in the name of Christianity, or using Christianity as an excuse...

I'd bet you that the vast majority of the military morons who tortured the prisoners at Abu Ghraib call themselves Christians too, just like our war-mongering, hate-filled president.
The worst thing a Christian will do is run our country into the ground and ensure that the world hates us...

Being a Gossiper doesn't make one a Truth-Seeker! it's linked to the issue of the Messenger's Credibility! How pure is his Heart, how Clear his Mind!!! If your concern is to help America to become a Higher Place, then be the first to show the example... and Act/Talk like a Man, not a Zealot!!! Was your point the Slandering of the entire Military? And since the world is interdependant and one, it will be either Hell for All or Paradise for All!!!
