The Tin Man
It's not just intellect and temperament that the president lacks; the man has no heart. A man with no heart doesn't worry about an armless veteran of a needless war. If he *saw* the poor in New Orleans, he didn't feel their pain then, nor does he lose sleep over their homelessness now. Heartlessness is the man's fatal flaw, and nobody, but nobody, talks about it. Only a man with no heart can laugh at a woman begging for mercy on the eve of her execution. But of course, we knew all about that before he was (s)elected back in 2000.

No Hope
Now we have radical Islamists who want to kill anyone who says anything about Muhammed without first going through a lot of ritualistic bowing and scraping, and we also have rabid superpatriots like Jon Sable who want to lock up anyone who disagrees with the president. Could the situation be worse? By the way, Jon, Garrison Keillor is a citizen of the United States. He can't be deported, unless, of course, you and your friends changed the laws and the Constitution while I wasn't looking.

History is written by the victors
I infer from your essay that you are an incurable optimist. The damage and disease this administration is inflicting on us may destroy what we used to know as our culture to such a degree that history will not be written because there will be no one literate enough to do so. However, if you are correct and we do eventually emerge from this viscous and vicious morass, incompetent and incurious will seem like praise compared to the words of revulsion which will be needed to describe the horrible crimes done by the person, his administration and the corporate (graft) structures with which they are intertwined.

Welll-said about Bush
Thank you for voicing my feeling about this lousy president. Unfortunately, we have to live with him for another three years. We don't know what more damage will be done by this stupid president. It is a nightmare with any citizen with a sound judgment.

The Little Man History Will Remember
I have always appreciated the wit of Garrison Keillor and his tongue and cheek humor has given me a giggle or two over the years. His recent article about our commander in chief didn't give me too many giggles. The utter depth of despair that I feel about the course of our nation and the people in our nations capital that we call our leaders, leaves me cold and full of great fear. I am astounded by the number of people who cannot see the similarity of America today and the America tthat existed after WWI? We have a crisis of leadership and our once free press seems to lost somewhere in the bowels of a George Orwell novel!
America, America...where have you gone? How can we support the fight for democracy in foregin lands when our own democracy is a sham?

Stick to tales of Wobegone
Dear Mr K. I have been a great fan of PHC and yours for many years. But, please dont go Hollywood and ruin all that. Please stick to entertainment and stay out of political commentary. Larry Goldfarb

The Little Man
Several of your writers have nailed it. I defy anyone to show an example of compassion by this man. On the contrary, we have book end remarks that reveal him in toto, beginning at Harvard where he repeatedly said "poor people are just lazy" and ending with his spontaneous remarks recently about the impact of his social security plans, to paraphrase: "we'll, some folks will just have to skip that crap game or not buy those lottery tickets." Watching him at the King funeral I just wanted to scream, "sit up straight fer Christ sake."

Bush could, that's who....
"...who could see this and not scour the depths of your conscience?"
Mr Kiellor, do you really think Bush has a CONSCIENCE? He is so small, so insignificant and puny in his moral, intellectual, and spiritual capacities that he couldn't face Cindy Sheehan, a simple and strong woman who wanted to know why her son died.
He doesn't have an answer, and he doesn't have an exit strategy. For Cindy, for the war, for the consequences of his murderous, illegal war and destructive policies. Everything from health care to education to the environment has been poisoned and brought to the brink of extinction by the power of this little man.
BUSH is the person who can see a beautiful woman, maimed for life because of HIS personal decisions, and not blink, not question. He certainly will NOT miss his sleep, nor his bike ride or daily run.
No, George Bush sleeps just fine. He has no conscience. And nor do his minions. All is right in their world.

re: The little man
Bravo, Mr. Keillor. One of the best brief summations of those goddam prissy little ants, and especially the chief ant, I've ever read. "Cats smoothing over a litter box," indeed, verily indeed. Incurious, not like a cat, and damnably disgraceful. How are we not to despair at bricks like that, and their supporters?

Treasonistic?
Perhaps the fur-bearing Mr. Sable has inadvertently paddled into water deeper than his stumpy legs can handle. Methinks the words we need worry about is fascistic, not treasonistic. Commander Codpiece proved his military mettle in the Alabama Cocaine Raiders, a little-known offshoot of the Texas Air National Guard. His behavior as commander in chief is precisely in keeping with his patrician pansy background. The cat litter metaphor is perfect. The current problem the bushistas face is too many turds and too little cover.

Blues Singer seeks new position
Dear Garrison,
Always a pleasure to read your fine writing. I'm nearly convinced to lay down my lap steel and look into one of those job paying 27 grand a year.
Then again, since I'm a big man, maybe I should go for the big job. I read fairly well have and been known to squint and even smirk when in a weakened state. I have a fair new suit with only three funeral and a wedding on the weave, and my mother taught me which fork to use many years ago.
After playing blues music for the last hundred years--musician years, (you have to add for the milage,) I could use four years of free rent. You say hello my friends, Robin and Linda Williams. They're mighty fine people and awfully good singers.
