The Republicans. Even now they will try to stomp out any moderate proposal that may come their way.

And we still have those 'easy' Iraq and Afghan wars. That isn't my characterization that was the offical Bush description. Now we have that plus our legacy of torture and indefinite detention.

In addition we have Bush's record on science. The lost time on global warming could easily cost millions of lives in low lying areas. This was all done against the advice of scientists to advance business objectives.

As far as leaving the country, I have and its not the worst thing that has happened to me. I know I probably come off as preaching too much about the glories of another culture many times but I'm still having fun. I would point out to others that there are "other games in town" and don't just assume that life in America will always be the best. I can assure you it isn't. I can also assure you that all coutries have weaknesses too and that no place is perfect.

In my experience Americans are both loved and hated in other cultures. They are jealous about the privlidges most Americans claim and American military might. But they also will respect American education. If you go into most places with a sense of humor about American culture and point fun at both cultures you will find acceptence in many places you go.

Remember, life is an adventure.

If a tsunami happens, which I hope it doesn't, we can do more to enhance our reputation in the Islamic community than all your troops and military hardware. But Uncle G, you will probably be looking for more guns and bombs. Those bombs will make you feel better but won't protect you from terrorism. Having the population on your side because you are helping them avoid natural disasters and the like will protect you from terrorism. Terrorists can't work in a vaccum, they need popular support.

In Machiavelli's words, from memory, "it is better to be feared than loved, but not hated". You probably don't worry about the hated part, but I do. I hope that a little part of our team's work can advance peace efforts just a little bit in the future. Just a little bit.

I hope that you and your Bush friends are defeated based on their unjust values and attitudes. Those values don't represent the America I knew and loved.

While I suspect you feel I'm a bright-eyed,niave optimist I look at events in Pakistan and Afghanistan remembering our historical role in the region with fear. Current events in that section of the world represent the product of American foreign policy hegemony. Pakistan now has nukes, I suspect in large part due to our efforts. But of course we'll never know. You might be OK with all this, but please don't assume we all walk around with the same values and have reached the same judgements.
