A round in the head of democracy.
Crowing about the rule of law while attempting to shame the electorate into believing the governing elite, including everyone in the chain of command responsible for torture, is above the law.
It's bullshit.
And I'm not surprised to see you glorifying it since you concur.
All this transparency and rule of law.
Lies.
Some years ago the right wing was busy attacking the left over what they called "situational ethics", the idea that you decide what is moral and right based upon the desired outcome. Now the likes of Dick Cheney are saying that we should forego our long established code of behavior because it saved lives.
So Cheney's logic states that torture is OK to obtain needed or wanted information based only on some belief that you will obtain what you desire. My questions is these; How far can we take this? Can we torture citizens if we believe it will save a life? If not, how many lives do we need to save? Can other countries use this same logic? Can it be used by them against our citizens and troops? If we believe it's needed can we use torture against those people and citizens that don't have he same political beliefs as we do?
I guess I want to know what limits are we ever going to put on governments to protect the people.
Although Cheney had his 8 years as president, he has decided he does not want to give it up and it looks like we are in for 4 more years of President Cheney after all. Someone should tell him we only have 1 president at a time and that his time is up....I don't understand why his speeches are given so much attention, more than the President's, MSNBC has been all Cheney all day, and it is growing quite tiresome. Seems this man has the ability to brainwash the media as well as he did the American public and they are reciting his tirade over and over and over all day. Instead of being on tv delivering his propaganda and twisted version of the truth, Cheney should be in a court room on trial for his illegal war, war crimes and treason. In fact I think that is really what he is afraid of and that's the real reason he is out trying to defend himself and cover his ass.
Before Bush/Cheney, American standards of liberty used to be to pay other nation's thuggish governments to torture people for us. Bush/Cheney simply cut out the middle man.
Obama says nice things, but let's see him end the goon squads still beating the hell out of prisoners to this day at Guantanamo, as documented by Jeremy Scahill.
Joe are you trying to con us or have you been conned?
Obama is Bush/Cheney with a more eloquent mouth. Watch what he does, not what he says.
Let no one underestimate the peril Cheney represents and his influence over the media. He pulls all kinds of strings.
He can wreak the greatest mischief and does not recoil from the gravest threats.
Knowing this, the defenders of democracy should be able to neutralize him - at long last. It's him or us.
I hope all those who voted out President Cheney will also be able to defend American democracy from mischieviousm string-pulling.
I have to wonder, what the heck is Cheney's message to the extreme right wing lunatics who will do anything or say anything to belittle and emasculate Pres. Obama?
It appears as though Cheney is suffering from some kind of post election shock. An african- american democrat is the President of the United States!
Frankly, I am not sure whose language scares me more Hannity's of the Dick?
The language of these two idiots are right on line with the language used to motivate the type of idiots who ultimately assinated Dr. King. Michael Steele must find his courage and address these hate filled attacks on our President.
The question remains - Did the past administration break the law regarding torture?
Yes, they did. Now Cheney is trying to say that it was justified. He should be allowed to present his case in court, then let a jury decide.
why is al qaida at war with the usa?
dubya said it was because america is so wonderful. but norway is much nicer, and an easier target. could it possibly be, that the response to supporting the invasion of palestine, to murdering iran's prime minister and supporting the brutal and corrupt regime of saud has angered many people in the middle east?
if insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result, then america is crazy.
"change you can believe?"
already it's more of the same.
How fitting, and sad, that Obama should announce the end of American democracy in the presence of these documents.
Indefinite detention without habeus corpus.
The divine right of president-kings, and no punishment for the elites.
The whole nation, and world, turned into nothing but a Gitmo, all of us, Muslim or not, servants to the whims of the wealthy and powerful aristocracy.
Me? I still hold these truths to be self-evident, that (as Dr. King intoned) allllllllll people are created equal, and endowed with certain inalienable rights.
That Dick Cheney does not agree with Jefferson and King, I am not surprised.
I only wish that our brother Barack Obama agreed with the American creed. I only wish we had elected an American like King or Jefferson or any non-elite-on-the-street as President, is that too much to ask? It has been too long since we've had an American in the Oval Office, or in Congress, or the high court. Too long. We worked too hard to be so betrayed.
Lets not forget who runs the media in this country. Its the same folks who adoringly fed us the lies that led to overwhelming support of the invasion of Iraq. Nobody in a press corps that owes it's paychecks to the elite class is going to tell the truth about the evils of the folks who write those checks. They only repeat and justify the lies and then give you some breathless promo for "Americon Idle".
I still blame it all on the teevee. We as a nation have just about dumbed down to a collective IQ of about 70. (If you ask an average American, they'll prolly tell you that 70 is a pretty high IQ.)
