Watching Bill Clinton work his magic at Davos

His rock-star status among world leaders, at a time when America's reputation is in tatters, shows the former president is a major asset to Barack Obama.

I like Joe Conason

but whenever Bill Clinton is in the neighborhood I know that there's a Hoovering coming. Bill Clinton pushed GATT and NAFTA as well as allowing huge media consolidation, some of the worst things to happen to the working class. Talking with other rich people is swell, and Bill's gotten his, but I really don't look to Clinton or his years with any joy.

bill clinton at davos.

slick willy and bad vlad, saving the world? seems unlikely. they each played a significant role in creating the latest catastrophe, more of the same mind-set is not going to help.

The Slickster in Swizzerland

I can agree with Conason that Bill Clinton is an international mega-star. He can schmooze, gab, and cajole with the best in the world. However . . .!

That doesn't mean he ain't chock full o' BS much of the time. Of course he takes the position that we (meaning, He) are better off than "we" think. No matter that the public safety budget gets cut in New York City and everyday life becomes incrementally more perilous. That has no impact on him, personally.

Life is sweet when you're insulated from the grind, Bill.

Cheers.

Interesting to watch people criticize Bill Clinton because

the ones who do are either befuddled by the lies of the MSM and the GOP--both of who detest the Clinton's--or are themselves Republicans or the MSM. Sure Clinton made some mistakes because, as the lady who works as a custodian volunteered to me, there is only one man who walks on water. Clearly, however, if the MSM and the Republicans hate Clinton he must have done and be doing something right

The fact is Clinton did more right than wrong--just as Obama will likely do more right than wrong but also not walk on water. Moreover, Bill Clinton is admired throughout most of the world as a smart, educated man dedicated to his country but also the the well-being of the rest of the world.

the personality cults...

...in which the USA indulges is symptomised by this waffle about Bill"the Saviour" Clinton. As many here have commented he is partly responsible for the out and out grab of wealth that has occurred since the great Gloablisation experiment began. As it is the ones who have been profiting from this troughing at swill are now telling us "Oops we got it a bit wrong" and then proclaiming that things should not change and that the system just be primed so the rich and fatuous can enjoy more swillingly good times. Give us a break! Clinton and his ilk are only responsible when the opportunity to grandsatnd and schyster each other affords itself. As it is the fact that he speaking with Putin should raise some very sticky questions, least of all why would he not discuss the talks with observers if he made such a public dodah about it?

It seesm the Clintons are very reluctant to let go of power, but i suppose when your private life is in tatters there is alwasy the solace of sychphnatic trolls who think, behave and imagine like you. problem is the world is moving on fast ant the best that Clinton can offer is the ntion that we stay the course. It's a bit like when the Titanic was sinking and many were in disbelief that their unsinkable ship was doomed and stayed on board. This kind of denialism is what got us here so far. Can we really rely on its ongoing manifestation in the mind of Slick Willy to get us out of this mess? It reminds me of all those Laurel and Hardy movies where the skinny guy always looks like he knows what he's doing until everything falls apart and the fat guy decides to cut and run. At least Bush has had the good sense to simply cut and run where as Clinton seems totally addicted to the adulation and popularity while never seeming to achieve very much except long term disaster. Bill should just stay at home and relax a while and let someone else have a go.

Bill Clinton Doesn't Realize...

...that he caused WW1, The Great Depression, WW2, the current global financial crisis and any and all crisis in the future. Despite all that, I'm glad you were president in my lifetime. I remember how things were when you left office in spite of the fact that the MSM and the Rethugs tried to effect a bloodless coup against you. But please admit to all the wrongs mentioned above so the bed-wetting, Viagra-gobbling jealous losers can shut the hell up once and for all. Please!!

An Excellent Way to Rebuild while Obama is so busy at home

We need the good feeling towards Clinton to help rebuild our reputation and standing.

President Obama is snowed under with the economic crisis, thanks to Bush as well, that he needs all the help he can get to go out into the wider world to help lay the groundwork along with public envoys like Mitchell.

I see that Obama is beginning the rebuilding for the time when he is freed up to be able to do more himself in the world and domestic concerns are not a pressing or critical.

The Posts slamming Clinton are mute point

I am not the biggest fan of clinton but, he sure was alot better then the idiot we had after him.

Yes, the free trade deals stunk. He caved too much to republicans.

But, he also did us well by the economy and he is, as one poster put, a big b.s. person. But, isn't that what is needed right now. Someone who can schmooze and bs with world leaders. And they are aware that being the SofS husband, will probably take messages and such home to her for future use.

One of Clinton's gifts is gab. And he is a walking encylopedia of world affairs.

There really is no one better then Clinton to go out and start to do the monumental clean up of the trash Bush has strewn around the world in our name.

Not even our new president because he is new and the leaders do not know him yet. They do Clinton.
