You know, the traditional punishment for intellectual elites is to parade them through the streets and humiliate them, followed by sending them out into the country to work on farms for re-education. that it occurred to me also to wonder about the George Will's of the world when Sarah Palin was demonstrating her lack of depth on serious issues to Katie Couric and the rest of us. I genuinely had a moment of sympathy for smart conservatives who have again to deal with an anti-intellectual candidate.

Steve (the conservative), please don't confuse the success Palin has had politically or personally with intelligence, which is what we're talking about here. She is simplistic, incurious, and uninformed. Her heavy reliance on folksiness and rehearsed talking points is a transparent attempt to change the subject when something that requires a little background knowledge or mental flexibility comes along. She's Dan Quayle and George Bush rolled into one. You may think that's a compliment. If you do, you don't need to worry; you are not one of the intellectual conservatives (like Frum, Friedman, Brooks, Will, Safire) I wondered about.

Not even at the 2004 RNC in my former hometown of New York City - where our "Democrat! No, Republican! NO, Independent!" Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, had the cops out arresting groups of protesters all over the place. (They missed me and the people I was with somehow - I'm so ashamed.) It was a lot like living in a Police State that week - which I'm sure the "decent people" Republicans from the Grate Ammurikan Heartland just LOVED to death while they gawped at the "New Times Square" which looks a lot like The Mall of America now....

In response to the earlier post inquiring about Senator Obama’s grades, I think I have been able to find at least indirect evidence of Senator Obama’s Harvard grades, although it was harder than the ease with which one can find out about Al Gore, George Bush or many of our other previous presidential candidates. From what I can gather, he graduated with the highest honors. I give credit where credit is due and tip my electronic cap to him. If the information I was able to run down is true, he earned it. Sorry out there to any other posters who tried to or did run the issue down and to whom I have not responded. Given the volume out there tonight, its hard to follow the threads.

I stand by my earlier posts, however, on the nature of his character, when compared to the nature of his opponents. If he wins, I hope for all our sakes, I was wrong.

I wish you all peace, including all those who would disagree with this assessment. And I promise, the last thing I will do tonight, and every day after tonight through the election, is to pray for you, and for Senator Obama.

God, if you have had time to follow all these threads some angry and some thoughtful, hear my prayer. May those who are angry tonight or at odds with each other, whether conservative or liberal, be calmed and work collectively for our greater good. If Senator Obama is to be our president, may he be good and just. May he be wise and an instrument of your peace. May true discernment accompany the gifts of his intelligence. May he uplift the poor and befriend the immigrant. May he end the death penalty. May he bring a just end to war without abandoning those nations which we must now responsibly build up. May he act in accordance with Your word. And may he come to realize, along with all those who may be fearful of the future, that the unborn, especially their own unborn, are people too, worthy of their, and our, protection and love.
