The dumbing down of the GOP

Why aren't more conservatives disgusted that their party nominated a person devoid of qualifications for the vice presidency (again)?

The letters thread is now closed.

For the same reason that....

For the same reason that more left fringe nuts aren't disgusted that their party nominated someone who:(a)thinks FDR was President when the NYSE crashed in 1929; (b)thinks that there was commercial television in 1929; and, among other things, (c) thinks that the U.S. and France united to drive Hezbolah out of Lebanom. We won't count his lies, Democrats applaud that in their candidates but, the early Alzheimers crap is a little disturbing.

By the way, Jon, do you get paid for this drivel?

@ Kerr Mudgeon

There is more to the vicious and emotional anti-Palin hysteria than the political challenge of her candidacy that is described below in my prior letter.

It's so transparent to call people "vicious and emotional" when they don't agree with you, but it's not exactly an argument. Then add in hysteria. Just to make sure that you understand perfectly, I am not hysterical -- unless it is with laughter. I am making fun of you and your candidate.

Also, don't call me Obamabot. I don't care much for him either, although I do think he is smarter than Sarah Palin.

No, I am just a mean person killing a Saturday evening.

But not violent! Never violent. I don't like violent people.

You seem to admire violence though.

Ms. Palin, because of the clear contrast that she presents, is a living rebuke and threat to all of the nation's many sexually inadequate and envious women.

Just how many of our nation's women have you had sex with?

Uh ... how do you know it was them? Maybe the problem was with you.

Her obviously happy and mutually fulfilling relationship with her alpha male husband also focuses attention on the shortcomings of, and creates similar insecurities and angst among impotent and metro sexual males.

Oh, I get it. You are Sarah Palin's husband and you feel a bit threatened by her success -- such as it is.

Don't worry, honey. She will soon be back in Wasilla. Let me give you a hint about making sure you come across as alpha rather than beta, despite having a political hot shot for a wife. I got this idea from observing my dog. Pee on semi trucks. Be sure and lift that leg high! You will feel soooo alpha!

Now, if you really are impotent, I am afraid I can't help you with that, but rather you should google Svutlana. She can help you.

Members of both these androgynous groups populate the corrupt academic, media, and other elitist institutions and chichi enclaves from which the irrational rage against Ms. Palin emanates.

You think education shrinks your penis? Aaahhhhh! That's sad. I understand some of the newer antipsychotics are very effective.

However, they won't help the impotence.

It is not an accident that neither of two notably sexually adventurous Democrat leaders who share none of Ms. Palin's political views has participated in the vehement hate spewing personal attacks against her. Notwithstanding their other personal shortcomings and foibles, neither Bill Clinton nor Ted Kennedy appears to feel personally threatened or enraged by Ms. Palin's participation in the nation's public life and political process.

You forgot John Edwards. Since you admire cheating and seem to think it has something to do with being "alpha," is this a confession, Todd?

Really you should confess your sad attempts to get laid by women who are not your wife.

Tell Sarah. Also, ask her about that story in the National Enquirer while you are at it.

Inquiring minds want to know.

@ Christopher1988

You worry about the attacks on Palin. You would like them to stop.

However, never once did I see you call for a halt to attacks upon Hillary Clinton. In fact, I recall you being quite harsh towards Clinton.

What's happened? Did you find Jesus?

unrepentantly ignorant

are words i unfortunately would use to describe many people i've known -- here and abroad, but to the point, here - both republicans and democrats. though it may appear facile, the difference i've observed is that those persons i've known who describe themselves as democrats (myself among them) are generally willing to listen and maybe learn - even if they cannot be persuaded. those persons i've known -- without an exception -- who describe themselves as republicans, though admittedly these are businessmen, are so self-assuredly dogmatic in their thinking, that they don't think they need to learn more than they already know. it's disheartening but also quite human to have such people -- after all, we americans are from all over the world, and to describe us in generalizations (as i just did) is narrow and unfair.

americans aren't any more stupid than other people in the world i've met. perhaps we are isolated a bit more than europeans, but really, get into a discussion involving a difference of opinion in the mediterraean or europe and you'll hear some real dogma -- more than enough to qualify as 'stupid'. that we like our presidents accessible and knowable is a strength. read de tocqueville. at our core we haven't changed much.

this is - or should be - a country led by the best of our peers and by consensus. the rovian monsters that conducted an experiment on the minds and hearts of citizens of goodwill in the past 8 years have a lot to answer for. hopefully those ideals the majority of us retain - both democrat and republican - and in fact never lost: hard work, perseverance, generosity and charity towards our neighbors (near and far) will ascend in november and lead us to our better -- not weaker, but stronger - selves and nation.

@AnnieW What about Kay Bailey Hutchinson?

I confess that I don't know much about her beyond name. I've never heard her speak. But she looks pretty bad ass on paper.

The interesting thing about the McCain campaign is that instead of tacking towards the center during the general, like most political campaigns do, he continues to tack to the right. Sarah Palin is the cherry on top of that strategy. McCain may have fired up the social conservatives, but at the price of alienating the centrists and independents. There's not enough of the former to win without the latter.

How much support would he have lost from the social conservatives if he had run a more moderate campaign with a more moderate, qualified candidate? I would imagine that a lot of Hillary supporters would not find it as easy to blow off Kay Bailey Hutchinson. I wonder if she was interested in the VP slot?
