The dumbing down of the GOP

Why aren't more conservatives disgusted that their party nominated a person devoid of qualifications for the vice presidency (again)?

The letters thread is now closed.

Oh Really!

Where have the educated elite in Washington taken us? They are liars and thieves. Maybe it's time for a simple, home-spun, honest type. I am sick to death of partisan haters. Heaven forbid they would give anyone a fair chance. Everyone has something to say and nobody's saying anything.

The Beauty Queen

Is an AIR HEAD. John McCain should be prosecuted for potentially putting this country in extreme danger. If he happens to win this election and I pray he doesn't, he has eslected as VP a person who is totally uninformed on the international and domestic issues for this dangerous world. HIS MANTRA COUNTRY FIRST IS A BIGGGGG LIE !!!!!!!

Blimey O'Reilly!!! You can't be meaning the same dummy that I'm thinking of can you, back in the fifties, the dummy I think was called Charlie and wore a mono glass a top hat?

Best one I heard from a Huff Post poster was Palin being described as 'Bible Spice.'

Dumbing Down of the Left

Yes I agree the American Left has been " dumbed" down. When I saw Joe Biden , a US Senator for 35 years, misquote Article 1 and not even know Article 1 addresses the legislative branch I was shocked. When I heard Biden claim the USA ejected Hezzbollah from Lebanon I cringed with embarrassment for America. Biden went on to tell at least 14 lies. When I see Barney Frank refuse to admit his culpability in the Fanny Mae mess EVEN when he is ON VIDEOTAPE and the lefties believe him I am convinced America has been dumbed down.

A republican mind is a terrible waste......

The most ludicrous aspect of all of this is that Sarah Palin has reached her tenuous grasp of the issues only after being tutored by the "best minds" of the Republican Party.

A couple of points

@zedgar, things travel fast with the internet, with or without scripting. When I first saw Palin her character reminded me of Dolores Umbrage in Harry Potter. Not in her looks, just her character, it was just my impression. I don't think I told anyone that, but I've since read a dozen posts at various places that say the same thing.

If it was catchy, it would spread beyond that, as have some of the other things. Whoever came up with "McSame" got a bit of traction. Is it high minded? No. But neither was "Nobama". Just because we are liberals, doesn't mean we're all thoughtful, elitist intellectuals. We can be emotional, angry, etc. just like the RW.

As to your other point, the problem that some of us have with her accent is it seems put on, exaggerated. Palin didn't seem to talk that way when she was running for Governor. Ya know, ya betcha's were no where to be seen. If Obama all of a sudden started talking like he had street cred, I would have the same problem. It would ring untrue.

Hilarious

Conason is the one who is trying to dumb things down.

A study shows Palin spoke at a 10th grade level and Joe Isuzu Biden spoke at only an 8th grade level.

Governor Palin proved herself to be able to bypass the hateful major media and connect directly with the American people.

She is far more qualified for Vice-President than Obama is for President.

Governor Palin is where she is because she earned it; she benefited neither from marriage nor race.

Obama has earned nothing and has done nothing; he stood by passively during the bailout debate.

Obama is not a leader.

Finally, to the dumbing down meme, Joe Isuzu Biden exposed his absolute lack of competency with has many mistatements/untruths/lies.

From the NY Post:

" * It's "simply not true" that Barack Obama said he'd meet Iran's president without preconditions, Biden insisted.

Yet when Obama was asked if he would in a debate during the primaries, he said yes - a position Biden back then termed "naive."

* Biden said he's "always supported" clean-coal technology - after stating emphatically only last month, "We're not supporting clean coal."

* Biden asserted - repeatedly - that the US spends more money on three weeks' combat in Iraq than it's spent in Afghanistan since the war began.

That claim's only remotely intelligible if he limits Afghan expenditures merely to US rebuilding efforts - and even then, he's off by a factor of three, according to State Department numbers.

* Also on Afghanistan, Biden insisted - repeatedly - that "our commanding general in Afghanistan said the surge principle in Iraq will not work" there.

That may not be an out-and-out lie, but it took supposed foreign-policy neophyte Sarah Palin to bring any context or nuance to the statement.

What Gen. David McKiernan had said was that tribal realities in Afghanistan are very different than in Iraq - requiring a different form of cooperation.

But he flatly said more troops, and more local engagement, are needed.

Sounds like a surge to us.

* Then there was what might have been the biggest head-scratcher of the night. Said Biden of the Bush administration's supposed Middle East follies:

"When . . . along with France, we kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon, I said and Barack said, 'Move NATO forces in there. Fill the vacuum, because if you don't, Hezbollah will control it."

Huh?

Assuming that Biden was referring to when, in 2005, American and French pressure helped the Lebanese people kick Syrian troops out of Lebanon, who ever thought NATO occupation of that deeply divided country was a good idea?

As if America's NATO allies would have gone in the first place.

But hey, as long as it makes Biden sound presidential.

At some point, Americans have to wonder: Is this a fellow who should be a heartbeat away from the White House?"

Saturday, October 4, 2008 07:40 AM

why would Americans want someone who is smart?

Smart isn't necessarily a virtue. After all, no one thinks enough of "smart" to fund education properly. It's simply enough to pass tests and get on with it, whatever it is. Cagey, slick, funny, cute and other mediocre ideals are best in our world today. Excelling is everybody else. Just getting by is what it's about.

Urgent message for gehgoeson

I appreciated your post more than I can express at the moment. In fact, I'm a bit teary already, and haven't even snatched up the Kleenex yet to watch and listen to the "experience" of my being introduced to a great American. In fact, because I've spent a sleepless night, I'm going to let myself be introduced later today, after some sleep

If you are still reading gehgoseson do it now. Wasted and sleepless is good. Use it as a lullaby.

The fucking number is actually called - 'In the Still of The Night.'
