Democrats, put down your swords

Mourn defeat, yes, but the destruction wreaked by the Bush administration leaves little room for factional fights and identity politics between today and Nov. 4.

The Clintons Are Down But Not Out

At her Baruch College event in NYC just a few days ago, Hillary Clinton added her name to a Major League Baseball that was inscribed by the famous New York Yankees catcher Yogi Berra with the quote: “It ain’t over till it’s over.” Bill Clinton also signed his name to the ball. I am offering it on ebay today, with a portion of the proceeds going to charity. This Yogi Berra quote summarizes the essence of the Clintons’ drive to win and their spirited campaign style. Don’t count them out from politics just yet.

Hillary's political career is over

I've said it ever since she went scorched earth. Most Democrats were disgusted at her "I'm going to blackmail the party into letting me have my way" bullcrap.

It would be the same for Barack if he had lost and acted as Hillary has.

Her career is over, it deserves to be over and all her wounds were self inflicted. In a year or so we should get a tell all about what the sam hell went wrong.

Faith

I have complete confidence in the ability of the Democrats to blow this. They should be a shoo-in after Bush, but as a lifelong Democrat, I know that you can never underestimate the Democratic party's ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. If the Repugs take back the White House this year, this will be the last time I vote--after 2000 and 2004, and 2008, I just couldn't take any more.

Amen, Joe, amen.

All we need do is read the last couple of items posted on Salon by Glenn Greenwald detailing the real agenda of Bush and his ilk, which is now being heartily endorsed by McCain. Our democratic republic is in real danger of vanishing under a third consecutive term with such anti-Americans in the White House -- people who do not value the rule of law, but instead crave the false security of a dictatorial supreme leader who is accountable to no one.

We need a bracing campaign centered on REAL patriotism to sweep Obama and like-minded Democrats into office in Washington, simultaneously sweeping McCain and friends into the dustbin of history. This truly may be our last chance to reverse the deplorable trend of the last 7 years!

What Can WE Do?

What's the most important thing for progressives to do at this point to help Obama beat McCain in November?

I'm in a state that's virtually guaranteed to go Dem, so my vote itself isn't the most important thing. Which are going to be the toughest but achievable states vs. the hopeless battles?

How can motivated progressives do our part to support the Dem candidate, best or worst of it?

My fantasy

I've said and thought some nasty things about Hillary Clinton during this primary. But she can redeem herself in my eyes, cause I don't hold a grudge. I want her to say to her supporters who want about voting for McCain "Are you people out of your f****ing minds???"

It would get a laugh, make a point and show that she's become a real New Yorker.

I ain't worried, none...

... because the GOP plants were the ones wielding the most swords in the first place. There are no shortage of such, even here at Salon. although they've been laughably transparent- they have no imagination, whatsoever- just the same lame warmed-over name-calling, insubstantial arguments, the works.

Progressive people, for the most part, don't act that way.

BTW- to the GOP Troll-plants, using the term "Democrat Party" blows your cover immediately. Proofread before posting, please.

thanks - my feelings exactly!

this election is bigger than senator clinton or senator obama. hell, i think it is even bigger than us. we must take back this country and i will do anything to make that happen. if we don't, we will have more erosion of civil rights (which would affect all female and male americans in every color), we will have an even stronger executive branch that borderlines dictatorial, we will have a conservative, state-centric supreme court that will overturn not only roe vs. wade but many federal laws, we will have a push to privatize social security, we will have no real answers to the war, veterans' benefits, education, global warming, the economy - you name it. we simply must get beyond ourselves and think of the greater good.

Obama supporters - Hope you're on your knees and ready to pucker up

Cause you better kiss our asses for the next five months if you want us to support your candidate.

The truth

"The destruction wreaked by the Bush administration leaves little room for indulgence in factional fights and identity politics between today and Election Day."

Can someone post that in Joan Walsh's office please?

Thursday, June 5, 2008 07:11 PM

Pucker up? Give it up already?

For all that is good and holy, please please come back to earth. Why do we (I guess I'm part of the we that hopes Obama wins, even though I'm a registered Independent and didn't have a vote in the primary) have to kiss the ass of people who almost destroyed the Democratic party? I'm really really confused about what it is we owe you.

@ john 762

Way to go, john. Insult the people Obama's gonna need come November. Good fence mending, there.

Thursday, June 5, 2008 07:12 PM

Thank you, JC

I really appreciated this column. I thought it was wise and well thought out, and hope all Democrats take it to heart.

Yes, but....

Only Hillary can make this right, after her self indulgent performance on Tuesday. Fine. Take a few days. Compose yourself. But, this Saturday, when the alleged concession takes place, it must be done with enthusiasm, no self pity, no blaming, and all the acid saved for the man who so richly deserves it: Warmonger McLame. She can do this. But it has to be real, we have to believe it, and she must turn her warrior's mentality into defeating those bastards that have taken our country from us, defiled the constitution, and started an unjustifiable war that will cost this country, in both financial and prestige terms, more than any other in our history. She came very close. Kudos. Congrats. Now, let's get to work. Together. No more pissing in the water supply from which we all drink. Enough of that. Turn on McLame like a wounded tigress. We know you have that in you, Ms. Clinton. Time to cowgirl up. time's a 'wastin'. jeff
