dog whistle, duh
Ancient assyrian is absolutely right.
The Clintons have been race baiting the whole time. It shakes my faith in Joe Conason that he thinks there is even a doubt about it.
And it's heart breaking. Most of us Obama voters adored the Clintons. They've destroyed their legacy and probably the party too.
Get ready for 4 years of McBush.

Unc7o Please.
If anyone thinks Republicans are linning up for Obama just think what they will do with Bill and Hillary. They are waiting for a chance to hit Bill and Hillary again with the defination of "is" "is." "I did not have sex with that women." They are then going to run the Bosina fiasco and her five different explanations and ask the question do we want this back in the Oval Office. White hard working, gun toting, homosexual hating, ditto heads are going to come out of the wood works to vote against her. Focus on the Family and James Dobson,Rob Parsley and Haggee would register voters quicker then you could say "Filegate." They would remind the Republican base of her attempt to shove universal health care down their throat.
The Anti-Abortion people advertising Bill's appointments to the bench would fire up the Republican base. Bill's pardons of Mark Rich and the two Weatherman would bring out more Clinton Haters. Then they would have commercials of the fire at the compound in Waco,Elias Gonzales, and then come back to "I did not have sex with that Woman" and Hillary standing by her man.

Not only Hillary, but Democratic party as a whole bears the responsibility!
Hillary can be shut down immediately if the undecided super delegates can cast their vote immediately rather than waiting until the primaries end.
So, she is not the only Hillary to blame, this is happening with the knowledge of Democratic Party Folks. If they want to doom their party then probably nothing can be done about it. Who said all of Democrats are intelligent.

If there was any doubt about what she meant...
Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, her proxy down in Miami, has removed any doubt:
"Senator Clinton continues to demonstrate that she has what it takes to win the Presidency ... while Senator Obama does well in areas and demographic groups that the Democratic nominee will win anyway."
At least they're honest about it.

If the Clintons
are willing to exploit racial divisions for their own self-serving purposes, what difference does it make if Joe or anyone believes they are not truly racist at heart? If Hillary tells whites that they are not expected to vote for the black man, AND THAT'S OK, and if she openly sells herself as the choice of whites, she's actually doing far more harm to the Democratic Party and to the nation than if she simply harbored her own racist feelings, frankly. What would Democrats say in the fall if McCain uses this same tactic against Obama? Wouldn't Democrats be apoplectic? Why allow HER to do it without severe and swift condemnation? And is it sooo hard to believe that perhaps the Clintons MIGHT be racist on some level? That they've simply mastered the art of pandering to and exploiting blacks as a means to power within the Democratic Party?

interesting thing about George Wallace
he was actually once a "liberal" on race (for Alabama at the time), but then lost a primary race of some kind. perhaps in the early 50's..anyway he then is supposed to have said that he would never get "outniggered" again.
The idea that the Clintons are not racist, and therefore can say whatever they want is totally ridiculous. first of all, how do you define "racist"? it's pretty tough, but one way would be to look at the kind of campaign(s) that one one runs. I actually don't even think that George W. is a traditional "racist". but yet look at what he did to McCain in South Carolina.
Just because the Clintons have been liberal on race and generally well meaning on the issue doesn't mean they have unlimited credibilty and capital in the area. they will do whatever it takes to win- in their delusion in thinking that they can still win today, the only argument is that B.O. can't win because he's black. so they'll take that argument
and run with it.
the Clintons have always been and always will be pragmatists: don't forget about Ricky Ray Rector (the crime bill, the welfare bill etc). anyway, it's been clear from this HRC will morph however she has to (must I even cite the examples?). the same goes with race.

"...tragic legacy for the Clintons?"
Joe,
Where have you been? Why has it taken so long for the scales to fall from your eyes?
Those of us who have spent years working for the Democratic Party, and who initially supported Hillary, knew after Iowa that she and the former president were going in a nasty and negative direction with their failing campaign.
Those of us who supported the Clintons through the last years of his presidency while Hillary and Bill were spending time and resources defending poor judgment are really sick and tired of the Clintons and their obsession with power. We've had little difficulty recognizing that Bill and Hillary are willing to use race, religion and anything else in their 'kitchen sink' arsenal to damage and harm.
It is a sad commentary that pundits and msm and cable talking heads were so very eager to anoint Hillary Clinton; that these same people have been so eager to grasp at Wright and at tag lines like 'blue collar voters' and 'old white women' to create a base for one or the other candidate.
We can all hope that by November there will be one or two of you who can discuss issues and discuss solutions without ignoring prejudice and biases that you helped create.

@ProudTexasGirl
Girl, I've coiled off stool samples with more human decency than you've got. Give us time, eventually Texas of tomorrow will put paid to excrement like you. There's' no place for the likes of people like you in the 21st century so just, you know, go away.

She didn't even misspeak--it was a prompt, factual clarification
If the quote is accurately reported as "...how Senator Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me," Clinton was being precise and accurate.
Leave out the "white" part and not only would the the statement be untrue, it would be insensitive and disrespectfully dismissive of the demographic group that is most solidly behind Obama.
THAT would have been racist.
