"I know some Latinos consider themselves white, but I don't know how many in Peurto Rico do...."
I can't tell you about Puerto Rico, the island, as a whole. I can tell you about areas of Puerto Rico, like Ponce, where there appears to be a recognition of the island's black influence and less of the preoccupation with colour gradation that has been evidenced in New World hispanic areas like Cuba, Brazil and the Dominican Republic.
In NYC, there has been a compatibility between blacks and Puerto Ricans that's similar to the affinity between Jews and Italians. This, in both cases, has pretty much resulted from both sets of groups sharing neighborhoods of the city as points of entry, in the immigrant experience [if you consider the Great, Northward Migration of black americans as a sort of immigration]. Neither pair of relationships are perfect--and there is, or has been, competition within each one-- but there IS a relationship. You don't see that, say, with NYC Dominicans and African-Americans and that may be the result of the complicated history of the island from whence the former group came and, specifically, what happened there between 1822-1844.

"Frank discussion about race?"
Obama's much-touted speech on race stated that we need a "dialogue", but I guess the dialogue can only come from blacks. Come on, you PC policemen - Hillary only stated the truth. We'll NEVER be able to talk about race in this country if the liberalis continue with this knee-jerk "Ooooh my God, she used the W word" nonsense. I'm a Repub & won't vote for either Dem, but you guys are nuts to pillory Hillary over this.

More laughable excuse-making from Salon's Clintonistas
What's most laughable is the headline which, just like Conason's previous rationalization of the Clinton's misdeeds, is misleading - which is fitting for this piece and all of Salon's articles on this race. Quoting a discredited Clintonista like Wilentz and making the specious charge that "Obama does it too" is about all Conason offers in the way of excuses after saying she "seemed to be equating, etc." It's really sad to see people like Conason who I used to admire continue to debase themselves for their former masters. Of course we have yet to hear from Joke Walsh now that the race is over and her candidate lost - unless you're one who thinks summarizing a two-minute disagreement on CNN counts as a contribution after the single biggest day of the primary season. Guess it's hard for the Clintonistas to face reality too now that their candidate has been exposed and rejected.

Let Her Speak
I am so glad that Hillary has shown her true colors (SO TO SPEAK). I have friends who never liked her, even though they admired and respected her husband, and I just never understood why. But now I know.
To say I can't stand her is an understatement. I am extremely proud of Obama. I can't believe that he is now the Democratic nominee - certainly didn't look like he would get this far when he declared his candidacy.
What will Hillary's legacy be - racially divisive, power hungry, destructive, and just plain nasty.
The day she drops out of the race cannot come soon enough. Good riddance - may she be so damaged by her maniacal behavior that she is in no position to ever run again for the highest position of our land.
GO OBAMA '08 AND BEYOND!!

Don't blame Hillary
She's just a typical white person.

Hillary supporters are unbelievable
To people like ShawnWM:
Why is "arrogant" constantly used to describe Obama and Obama's supporters by Hillary fans? Why don't you just say "uppity," because I can't see what else you might mean.
Is he arrogant because he dared to run for president when it was "Hillary's turn"?
Is he arrogant because he wants to change politics, instead of wallowing in the same old swamp of "say anything, do anything to get elected" that the Clintons seem to enjoy muddying themselves in?
He and Hillary both have Ivy League law degrees, so if you're buying into her bullsh&t labeling of him as "elite," grow up. She's had a much more privileged life than he has.
Obama has not once played the race card in this entire election. His message has nothing to do with him being black. The Clintons, by contrast, have continued to inject race into the discussion in attempting to divide voters and rally racist white voters to their side.
Joe Conason is either naive or disingenuous when he says that "if Bill Clinton's comparison of Obama and Jesse Jackson was badly timed and clumsy, that too fell within the bounds of acceptable commentary." Bill Clinton is a slick political operator. His timing was not off, and neither was he clumsy. Nor was it acceptable. What he did was attempt to dismiss the legitimacy of Obama's campaign by comparing him to Jesse Jackson, a black candidate who "won South Carolina twice" but who everyone knew never had a chance of becoming president.
As a resident of New York, I was dismayed when Hillary ran for the Senate in 2000, because it was clearly only about her wanting to be president eventually. I think she is a megalomaniac who has a pathological need to be in a position of power, and I think she cares a lot less about the Democratic Party, about the United States, and about white working class voters than she does about her own ego and satisfying her own perverted desire to hold and wield power. You can't get any more arrogant than someone who's already lived in the White House for 8 years but feels like she should be entitled to another 8.
I voted for Hillary for the Senate in 2000 anyway, because I know that having Democrats in power is a hell of a lot better for this country than having Republicans in power. If the past 8 years have taught us anything, that should be it. So for any Hillary supporter who says they'll vote for McCain in November, I have to ask, what is it about Hillary that you like? Her last name? Her gender? Because if you support her ideas and policy proposals, voting for McCain would not make any sense. Do you not have any core values or principles? You would vote for McCain because somehow you're angry that Obama dared to run against -- and legitimately beat -- your preferred candidate? Grow the hell up.
