Mike Huckabee's affinity for religious extremism is no secret. But is biblical law at the heart of his presidential vision?

  • What Jesus Wouldn't Do

When the "godly men" of his day sent men to arrest Jesus Christ prior to his crucifixion, Peter cut off the ear of one of the soldiers.

Jesus put it back on and basically told Peter not to resist because this was the reason he (Christ) came to this world. Later at the high priests' palace Jesus told the assembly of "godly men" that was about to have him crucified that his "kingdom is not of this world, or else his servants would fight".

For all practical purposes, I am what the media would refer to as a "fundamentalist". I believe the bible is the word of God, I believe Jesus is the Son of God, I am anti-abortion (on demand, not in cases where the mothers life is at stake, or other extreme cases, I oppose abortion as an aid to casual sex without the pesky interference of children), I am anti-homosexuality (not anti-homosexual, I lost a dear brother to aids in 1989 and I did not by any means hate him, but I still believe the behavior is wrong), yet nothing scares me more than these self serving Old Testament bigots.

If God wants the likes of Mike Huckabee in office it will not be to bless America but to destroy it. Jesus made it plain that his kingdom is in the hearts of men not in the houses of government. If a politicians motives are determined by his spiritual values, so be it,let him vote and act accordingly, but Jesus never tried to cram the truth down anybodies throat, it is left to the individual to do the right thing, and in any cause, people are truly won by example and not by fiery rhetoric or heavy handed enforcement of arbitrary rules.

God save us from the so called "godly men" who aspire to dominance (and, I might add, ungodly men, and women, who aspire to control our lives, be they liberal, gay, militant black, or whatever)and give us someone who is truly dedicated to the US Constitution, which I believe God gave us and which has served us well these last couple of centuries.

  • Mirror images

What we seem to be seeing is a mirror image of the Taliban, only in a nicer suit and haircut.

  • What I would just LOOOVE to ask Huckabee and some of his Christian Reconstructionist friends:

The Bible clearly prohibits men from shaving or even trimming their beards. Should this become American law?

Just picture what a man looks like after years of growing his beard without ever even trimming it. Now, what pops into your mind? Does it look a bit like, um, well . . . .

    Osama bin Laden?

This could be fun. Remember when Nancy Pelosi visited Syria, and as an act of courtesy and respect for her hosts she tied a silk scarf over her hair? Rightie commentators hyperventilated for weeks about how she was "wearing the uniform of the enemy," although of course she was clearly not draping her scarf like the traditional Islamic Hijab, which loops under the chin and is fastened on the side. But it was close enough to a hijab to allow the likes of Ann Coulter to refer to it as a "burka," thus demonstrating their total illiteracy on the subject of Islamic clothing. Now, as I recall, St. Paul also said that women should cover their hair in public, didn't he? In a country run by Biblical law, we might all look quite a bit like Taliban.

  • Re: Somewhere else

I'm always browsing the listings of properties in France. You're probably wise to hang onto yours. It's hard to believe we could do worse than George Bush, but Huckabee could certainly put the finishing touches on what Bush has so disastrously started.

  • and the rest of us?

Following Huckabee's train of thought and making this country into "God's laws" (however that may be defined is another argument) what are the rest of us supposed to do? What about the religious freedom - or freedom from religion-- we are guaranteed?

Where is the place for the Jews, Hindus, atheitsts, agnostics, Muslims and Buddhists in this country? I just don't get how anyone can spew this stuff in the diverse society we have today. And to think, our country was founded by people who wanted to get away from this kind of intolerance.

  • Changing the Constititution will be no easier tomorrow than it is today

Adding an amendment is fairly difficult. I can't see Huckabee simply waving his arms over his head and making it so.

  • Christians? In Label only.

The overwhelming majority of Christians have no clue what is in the Bible and have no clue as to who and what this Jesus character was and the worst part is that they are so dull has to have no interest in finding out anything about what they profess as their faith.

Death by stoning to all who work on the sabbath, disrespect their parents, have sex outside of marriage and eat pork or just shut the hell up you pitiful evil parodies of a religion that makes Scientology look legit.

  • Stone Soup

Huckabee really doesn't get that the story of the Loaves and fishes isn't about God making the food multiply and go around, it's about Jesus getting the crowd to share what they had - those with more food sharing with those with none. It's actually a story about the re-distribution of wealth and resources for the good of all. You know, sort like those commie socialist democrats what to do with their progressive taxes that take from the rich and do crazy shit like feeding the poor.

  • Not far from the tree

There are things which seem to run in families.

Are you aware that one of this guy's sons has been busted twice?

    Once for cruelty to animals.

Once for packing a gun in an airport.

When one is cruel to animals and gets in a position of power, how do they act?

I believe we already know the terrible answer to that.
