Letters to the Editor

But is she ??
Ok, maybe it's because Salon got rid of The Fix, but part of me wants to read this book to learn if Mabry has anything to say about Condi's sexuality. Rumors have swirled around her just as they did around Janet Reno 10 years ago.
It would be SO telling if an African-American lesbian was a Republican. I don't think it's possible to get more self-hating than that.

Condi's a sychophant?
Their is one puzzling trend in the posts and in Conason's angry tirade: Republican women are brainless, Stepford sycophants when they, like most political appointees, support the boss(es) that appointed them. According to the posters, the President chooses male appointees who happen to agree with him of their own free will, but the women are nothing more than enabling lackeys smitten and infatuated with the boss - this formulation smacks of twisted sexism.
Since Republican women have this obligation to criticize their bosses, what was expected of Janet Reno, Madeline Albright, Donna Shalala, and especially Hillary?
Also curious was the old cliche that Rice and Clarence Thomas benefited more than anyone from Affirmative Action. Since both attended private universities over 30 years ago, I'm not sure how much "affirmative action" was involved. someone care to provide some factual support for this?
I'm not a Bush Republican (I never voted for him or his Dad), just a black man tired of being told what to think by white "liberals".

had enough, I feel your pain.
I, too, was stunned that any educated author could enter into this project of writing about Condi's life without having an inkling that she is a liar of the highest (er, lowest) order.
I have never seen her speak--defending the indefensible, blindly parroting her vicious cohorts, or blatantly and chirpily lying to the Senate--without experiencing the same revulsion that Bush, Cheney, and all those other bastards create in me.
had_enough, I have been paying attention all this time, as I am sure were many of us here. I was nearly assaulted at a peace sit-in when a large burly college student screamed in my face that "they were fighting over there" while I was "sitting on my ass." I am sure I would have been assaulted if I had asked him why, if he was so passionate about it, he wasn't there himself. I mention this because I think that Condi and the Bushies very cynically have used fear, in many many ways, to whip up rage against those people who dared to disagree with them.
It is disheartening indeed to see that it has taken this long for some of the truth to come out, and even more disheartening to think how easily the majority can be completely deceived in the future, again and again. Goebbel's formula works, as these scoundrels know.
But it seems that Condi Rice will never look closely at the dark truth of things. People like that scare the shit out of me.

Ricearoni
At first, I misread the headline to read "never looks black". That works, too. What an ethics-challenged self-serving toadie. She's earned a place on the war crimes docket, right between Dick and Rumsfailed. She makes Colon Powell seem principled, and that ain't easy.
-
perhaps this is clearer: condi and clarence thomas are the highest ranking black beneficiaries
of affirmative action in American History. I can't think of any higher or as clear cut, can you? colin powell at least arguabley earned his job, those two by any rational measurement clearly did not.
-
Dude, Where's My Country..?
What she deserves is a seat in the docket at Nuremberg and an appointment with the hangman. This entire regime is guilty of war crimes and if justice and accountability are to have any meaning they need to be charged.
You I like.

Another personal note
Ah, Dr. Condoleezza Rice. I remember her well from my Stanford undergraduate days. Dr. Rice was Stanford’s Provost and dealt with the aftermath of Former University President Donald Kennedy’s indirect cost controversy. To put it succinctly, Dr. Rice was charged with eliminating $18 million dollars from the university budget over a 3-year period. She accomplished this feat by cutting funding to many minority programs which coupled with her political leanings earned her the distrust and disgust of the undergraduate community especially the black community.
During this time, I was taking a leadership course at Stanford and one of our assignments was to interview a community leader. I, in my naivete, announced that I was going to interview Dr. Rice. Yes, I was really that arrogant back then to think that I could just command an audience with the likes of Dr. Rice. Well, to everyone else’s surprise I did get my interview albeit under false pretenses but we won’t go into that in this forum. Anyway, Dr. Rice was pleasantly professional in her handling of my softball interview questions. She talked about her love of ice-skating (who knew) which she reluctantly gave up when it became clear to her that she would not be a top tier professional ice skater. She talked about her love of music just like the article mentioned. And it was all so pleasant and yet calculating in a creepy sort of way. I felt like she was sizing me up but for what exactly I did not know.
Years later, I literally ran into Condi at the Hewlett Foundation in Menlo Park. She was on the board and I was the Grants and IT Administrator at the time. I didn’t know that she was on the board when I applied for the job nor did I dare list her as a reference. But now that I think about it I always wondered how I got that job right out of school.
Dr. Rice has an intense personal drive that transcends her gender and race. As someone with a similar background (poor black kid from racist Louisiana) and a similar drive to succeed, I can’t say that I am surprised at what has transpired within the Bush administration. Just like her earlier days at Stanford, if you have a “dirty” job that needs to get done, Condi is definitely your go to person in that respect.
P.S.
Condi, if you get wind of this letter from one of your underlings, please don’t take it the wrong way. I don’t want to end up in Gitmo! j/k :)
