The U.S. attorney general's willingness to serve as the president's ultimate yes man makes him unqualified for the office.

  • ultimate qualifications

Isn't the attorney general expected to be the President's Yes-Man? Think of the great John N. Mitchell!

  • AG a yes man?

Janet Reno was most certainly NOT Clinton's yes-man (gender aside). She was a model independent (sometimes too independent) AG. Can you imagine Gonzlaes appointing a special prosecutor to investigate Bush of something?

  • The Cheney administration...

is a criminal conspiracy, just like the mob and any number of banana republics. US Attorneys threatened like a protection racket. These people are so corrosive to a democracy. Near sociopaths, speaking mendaciously to congress while veterans are mistreated and corruption encouraged all the while people die. Vile, the whole damn bunch of them. As for AG the AG, he will be replaced by someone worse. Better to impeach the whole crew and pull the rot from the root.

  • Old news

We've seen Republicans angry at the administration's minions before, and has anything changed? So what if Ensign and others

score Gonzalez? If their anger meant anything, they would demand his resignation. But they haven't--their tolerance for having themselves and the Constitution shit on is limitless.

  • Why is anyone surprised?

This man was always unfit. He sent men to death, in Texas, as Bush's lackey. He endorsed the torture memo. He has never given a straight answer to Congress, on any question.

Anyone worthy of their Constitutional oath, knew they had a duty to reject his confirmation. Too many Democrats made noises about his "biography"; as if being the first Mexican-American Attorney General made torture OK.

Cabinet members can be impeached. This man, along with Cheney and Bush, is the biggest threat to our Bill of Rights. If the Democrats are afraid to impeach Bush (and I have too little respect for them, to think otherwise), they should at least impeach Gonzalez.

Dictatorship won't come dramatically through a coup. It came via the last couple of elections. It comes gradually as the people are afraid and want security. It comes when the media and opposition are compliant. Just take a look at what V. Putin is doing in Russia. He didn't start by murdering reporters. He started by torturing "terrorists" and then began whittling away ordinary citizens' rights. It HAS happened here, Joe.

    Impeachment: if not now, when?

  • What we will never know...

...is how many prosecutors chose to acquiesce to the pressure and terminated investigations, dropped cases, or just happened to "overlook" promising lines of inquiry.

But I'm pretty sure it happened.

  • purge

Gonzales must go is a no brainer. But under chains to permanent isolation for his complete and willing sacrifice of the constitution.

It is high time the guillotine to be brought out from storage and used publicly for the dismissal of such types. They (Coulter and company) have been clamoring for same, it is about time we show the same willingness and desire for these traitorous scum.

  • Republican Senators take their Marching Orders from the Whitehouse

It was just a few weeks ago that Republican's blocked the Democrats attempt to modify the offending passage in the Patriot Act which gave the President the right to appoint replacements for mid-term federal prosecutors without seeking approval from the Senate. It was a quite puzzling move considering Senators always seek to preserve and expand their own powers, Bush is a wildly unpopular lame duck President who clearly abused his new power, and finely they could hardly count on a Republican to always be in the Oval Office. And yet in the face of mounting controversy they successfully blocked it. Why? Because Republicans first, second and last instinct is always ro protect their own, no matter how wrong they are and no matter the cost to the nation. It was only when the scandel begin to take traction in recent days that the Whitehouse who evidently still calls all the shots for the Republican Senators, agreed to not block restoring the right of approval to the Senate and it is far from a done deal.

Do not for a moment think that any anger no matter how sincerely expressed by any Republican Senator means that anything real is going to change. The only way Gonzales will be removed from office is if the President or who ever does the President's thinking these days decides he has to go. It is pure fantasy to think for a moment that anyone will be removed from office by the Republican's who hold the deciding vote in any impeachment proceeding. Any administative staff that needs to go will offer their resignation to a President who will claim to "reluctantly" accept it. The only potential impeachment is Cheney, who can not be Constitutionly removed from office any other way and somehow I don't think even Rove is up to orchestrating the monumental task of prying Cheney's death grip from the reigns of power.

  • Specter, the cowardly lion

"As Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., said Thursday, in a moment of justified anger, 'One day there will be a new attorney general, maybe sooner rather than later."

Specter is press whore and a blowhard. And a joke.

Whenever Specter talks tough about Bush, Laura hides the pretzels to prevent another choking incident from the laughing fit that is sure to follow.

Whenever Specter talks tough about Bush, put your hand on your wallet. Vegas should post odds after every Specter press conference, and take bets on the speed with which he caves. He's already backpedaling. Crooks&Liars has the Face the Nation video where Arlen clearly is setting up his bail-out on USA Iglesias and one other from Baltimore.

The president is spraying his evening nightcap of Benedryl through his nose in laughter right now as a video medly of Specter soundbites plays over and over for his and Gonzo's amusement.

  • impeach bush

It's the only answer. By the way, anyone who wants a free impeach bush bumpersticker can get one at impeachbushbumperstickers.com, just email info5@impeachbushbumperstickers.com and mention salon.

  • How much longer...

I keep thinking Ok, this is got to be the straw that breaks the camels back; only to be disappointed by the inability of the democrats & law abiding republicans to do the right thing. At some point both of these groups need to grow a back bone and stand for protecting this country from the hacks and the extremists that will destroy this country from within. It seems that the Dems never learned from the Gingrich revolution - when they (the Republicans) were in the hapless minority they learned how to use the media and take back congress - granted it was with lies (aka Contract with America) and distortions, but how much stronger can the case be made against Bush and his cronies with the truth. Fiengold can't do it alone. Hmm.. Time to rent Mr. Smith goes to Washington.
