In a powerful TV ad, Iraq and Afghanistan vets attack Republicans who voted against funds for body armor. GOP, beware. Dems, wake up.

  • Bullet-proof politics

Republicans have been able to count on the support of the professional millitary for over a generation, even more so than that of fundamentalist Christians. All that the soldier in combat asked of this Republican Congress in exchange for his continued support was to make sure that he was supplied with the best equipment, training and support. These vets have made the most damning indictment of this Republican congress. These Republicans are too inept, too corrupted by pork barrel opportunities, and have wasted too much of this congressional session on frivolous legislation to hold on to even this most "semper fidalis" constituency.

  • We could sure use some of their truth in Missouri!

Oh please please pretty pretty please ..... Can they air the ad against Jim Talent here in my neck of the woods?

  • Go Vets

These asswipe politicians sent our boys, and some girls, into that which they had no understanding. I wonder how lower the casualties would have been if we had been prepared for protracted urban warfare with its prerequisites: armored cars and good body armor. Then again that's what happens when we have an administration filled with fucked-up chickenhawks who've only seen combat on TV.

  • Please to 'splain the Democrats to me, Lucy

Can anyone please tell me why the Democrats around the country seem so completely clueless as to the knife fight nature of political campaigning these days and how to wage such a battle? I mean, are they all this dumb? Where's the creative thinking? The ruthlessness? The attacks on the Achilles heels of the corrupt, incompetent, bigoted, corporate loving, Bush-blowing Republicans? I don't get it.

I mean, how hard is it to pre-empt the "smear and fear" tactics of Karl Rove by running ads and making speeches in August and September that say, "My opponent is so desperate to take me down that you're certain to see a lot of ugly, slanderous attacks on me in the media, in advertising and on the Internet in the coming weeks. When you do, keep two things in mind: my opponent is using such attacks because he has nothing else, and such attacks are an insult to the intelligence of you, the voter."

How hard would it be to do that? You'd completely take away the negative slam ads from the GOP candidates and turn them into negatives for the people who run them. Why don't Democrats do this? Can their logic be so completely different from our Earth logic?

    I don't get it.

  • Liberal Vets Exist

We just never ask them what they think. Whether left or right, most career military veterans respect the chain of command, believe actions speak louder than words, and are not apt to whine about conditions. They're willing to speak the truth, however, when asked. This is why the criticism of Rumsfield by retired generals was so extraordinary. There are many more like them.

My dad retired a Commander after serving 22 years in the Navy. He's a Democrat and loathes Bush. He was critical of Rumsfield before it was popular. Rumsfield's incompetence is plain to see to miliary professionals.

There are lots of vets out there like my dad. No one asks them what they think.

  • Any soldier who supports republicans is a fool

The Republican party has shown nothing but disdain for our soldiers. They pay lip service to supporting the troops and never hesitate to use them as campaign props, but the only times they back up their talk with action is when there are political points to be scored. They have repeatedly denigrated the service of men and women who served in Vietnam, even to the point of claiming that men who received the highest honors soldiers can receive are cowards. I can't understand how any soldier who watched the "purple band-aid" protest during the Republican convention could ever support this party. They have cut veterans benefits at every opportunity, cut benefits to soldiers families, refused to fairly compensate the men who fight in the name of the National Guard, and sent troops into battle with second rate equiptment. Their leadership is overwhelmingly men who have never seen battle. There is no shame in not fighting a war, but the attitude of these men seems to be that anybody who is stupid enough to go to war deserved to be treated like dirt when they get home. Re-reading this, my letter seems a bit hostile. That was not my intent. I guess that I'm really sick of watching soldiers being used as campaign props while the actual behaviour of the Republican party shows that they have no respect for the men whom they are using so blatantly.

  • Thank you Jesus, the military may save us yet

It seems our proud military sons and daughters, husbands and wives, brothers and sisters will ultimately be the ones who save us all from this corrupt Republican Administration by simply showing their bravery in speaking truth to power. Something the Cowering Democrats cannot manage to do. This failed and frankly embarrassing Democratic party has condemned American citizens to a new Dark ages. Even the weak ads that the democrats have thus far produced are pitiful by comparison to the VoteVets forthright demonstration of the consquences of the many inept decisions the Republicans have made since this war began. I just gave a big donation to them to continue their current 'mission'. They are so much more effective than anything the Democrats are willing to do. HOORAY FOR OUR TROOPS!

  • You're Kidding, Right?

The Factcheck folks absolutely destroyed this ad. Also, they have a heck of a lot more credibility than Media Matters, which wouldn't object to an ad that said that George Bush eats live babies on the White House lawn at 3PM every Thursday, but would slam an ad that said Bill Clinton is anything short of the second coming.

Lots of reasons to vote against George Allen, but this ad is deceptive at best, an outright lie at worst. If this is how Democrats think they need to act to win elections, I'll vote Republican - they're better at it.

  • Hey JustAguy

Why do you believe factcheck.org over our guys in uniform? I think you are unpatriotic. I also think you don't have a clue. Who will Americans believe? The guys who were sent into this war unprepared, without direction from the leaders of this war and with little chance of success, or some pencil neck geeks at some fact check web site? And another thing, who cares if its true or not? How many Americans still think Saddam flew one of the jets into the WTC? Politics is about perception, not truth.
