The Future of the Republican Party
Dear Editor:
The ultimate motivation for immigration reform is quite simple: demographics. The white people who vote Republican in the Red States are endanger of becoming demographic minorities in these states because of declining birth rates, immigration of other sorts of American into some of these states, emigration of young people from other states, and finally, an influx of Hispanics in every state now.
W. understands that the Republican Party needs to expand its circles of supporters. He reasons that if he can get a significant percentage of the Hispanic vote in some of these states, it will keep those states' electoral votes red. To do that, he needs to give them something, and that is some sort of legalization program.
On this issue W. is quite forward-looking in that he wishes to go beyond the white/anglo/christian paradigm which is the ethnic archetype of the American in the Republican Party. Unfortunately, his party has yet to realize that and because of it, they will suffer. No immigration, Hispanic or otherwise, will support a party which suggests that their cultural and ethnic background is somehow foreign to being included as a member of the American people.
Sincerely yours,
Arthur C. Hurwitz

the disingenuous posturing of politicians and pundits sickens me
Ah, the sweet stench of overclass hypocrisy. April is the cruelest month, especially when the American overclass collaborates to manufacture consent for yet more mass immigration of cheap and desperate scab labor from the 3rd world.
As for the ridiculous canard that Bush actually wants to stop illegal immigration, I give you his quote regarding why illegal immigrants are in Texas: "because Texans don't want to lay tar in August."
Umm, George, Texans are more than glad to lay tar any time of year, if they could just get the overclass to pay enough. That quote, by the way, was published in Mother Jones, 1997.
So, the overclass, like Bush and his foul and evil ilk, and Mr Conason and his fellow pseudoLeft pundits, all of them want more illegal scab labor. And of course they have to put on this little show like they are on opposite sides. Just posturing....
But I, and a few others, do know what is going on. All you have to do is just read the help wanted ads. Here in Houston, the want ads are asking for cashiers and assemblers and security guards and so forth, and offering $5-6/hour. Same pay they were offering 10 years ago. I know because I read the want ads. The overclass have been very successful in holding down wages by flooding the labor market with illegal scab labor.
Now, if you will excuse me, I have to go now. I can only stand the foul stench of the PseudoLeft and the PseudoPopulist Right for so long....

P. T. Barnum was right....
In the declining, desperate, sad and depressing climate of the american workplace circa 2006, how can ANYONE think that it is a good idea to legitimize 11 million scab laborers who are breaking the law?
Oh, that's right.....those who need their lawns trimmed, and their food prepared....OR those who need to self flagelate periodically to appease their overeducated liberal guilt. Neither camp usuallly understanding what it feels like to actually be a member of the rapidly deflating working class. We're just screwed again.

what I think is going on here
Doesn't Bush have a nephew, late 20's, who is half Mexican? And he will be old enough to run for president in what, six years? eight years?

Bush does nothing right and deserves no credit for anything
Joe,
In the past I have enjoyed and agreed with much of your writing but not this one.
I cannot support any group of people who brek the law, in this case illegal immigrants. I cannot support Bush and his constanly lying crew. These people NEVER do anything for anyone except themselves and their friends. Bush supports illegal immigrants for only two reasons, cheap labor for the corporatists, and votes for the continued domination of himself and his friends. I guarantee that somehow at sometime Bush & ilk will benefit in someway from his illegal immigration strategy.
The continued downward wage spiral caused by illegal immigrants will never benefit the legal American citizens. Legal Americans will continue to suffer and I can forsee no end to that suffering to legal wage earners and their families. I can forsee no value acruing to America and it's citizens, only to corporations who seem to have unlimited amounts of money at their disposal with which to destroy the legal American wage earner.
Bush is nothing but lying schemeing bullshit. Bush is a sick demented human being who cares not at all for America. His allegiance is to himself, the Bush family, the Repubs(just watch and you will see this whole issue will be manipulated to their benefit) his cronies and friends, corporatocracy and a few other special interest groups.
Dubya is one sick puppy who desires only political power and ALWAYS sells out to the money groups that provide him with the money to stay inpower.
Remember Joe, Bushies are promoting only one thing and that is the same thing Hitler wanted namely, 'A NEW WORLD ORDER', which means a world controlled by the haves whether they live here or in Mexico or in any other country. The Rule of the Rich of which the Kennedy family is a member as are the Clintons and the Kerrys. Remember Joe, Bill Clinton is a member of the bilderberger group and Kerry is a Yalie and a member of the 'Order of Skull and Bones. Also Joe, don't forget 'The Council on Foreign Relations and the wealth of the Catholic Church,my church I am sad to say, and the other fundamentalist religious leaders in America who constantly preach politics.
I will probably never change religions but were I to do that I would look for a church that stays OUT OF POLITICS.
In supporting amnesty for illegal immigrants Bush continues to use Rovian devide and conquer tactics which set people against each other for his own political advantage and that of the Repub. party. Now don't tell me that there are significant numbers of Repubs against amnesty for illegals because that is nothing but more Bush/Rove smoke and mirrors. They will do everything they can to divide the Democrats and the dumb Dems fall for it evey time. The poor dumb Dems are in way over their heads with regards to the tremendously sophisticated Rove/Repub political machine.
Bush has absolutely no morals at all and will do whatever it takes to remain in power. Bush is an ex-drunk drug user who had no morals to begin with and is prey to the thinking of people like Rove,Cheney,Rumsfeld,Rice,Hughes and the radical religious right wingers who are so full of hate.
The above mentioned people and others, too numerous to mention, are not in any way truly religious people nor are they truly patriotic Americans who work for and care about the American people.
According to those who know what they are talking about Bush if he truly wanted to spread Democracy around the world would have shown more respect for Muslims, gays and women seeking abortions instead of using these them to build a presdiency/party of hate. Bush the false christ promotes hate whereas the true Christ that I learned about in my Catholic education spoke only of 'Love For All'. The Catholic hierarchy in Rome and the other religious fundamentalists in America would never follow Bush who claims to be the christ who claims to be on a mission. Bush has a meglomaniacal and messianic complex. Surely the aforementioned groups can recognize that or so one would think. Anyone who claims to be a christian would never support a heretic and blasphemer who claims to be the true Christ. The only other possibility is that these religious groups must be consumed by hate and drunk for power.
According to those who would know Bush could have spread democracy by spending ten billion dollars a year to educate, clothe, feed and medicate most or all of the impoverished children of the world. That means in ten years America would have spent 100 billion dollars on behalf of those children in Darfur and so many other places. That is something I and all Americans would have and could have been extremely proud of and that is what would have won hearts and minds and spread Democracy around the world. Instead Bush & Co. have spent over 320 billion dollars on the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. And it has been predicted by economists that whenit is all over(which it may never be) the total cost will be well over 600 billion dollars. AND, bin Laden is still running loose.
If the right wing radical religious fundamentalists really want to do good works they should have demanded that the aforementioned strategy be followed. But obviously they just don't care.
So Joe C, I do not support your premise thatBush deserves credit for doing something right, in fact he does nothing right, at all, ever.
