"Saddam chose to deny inspectors" Bush repeated this bald-faced lie recently. The cowering press still lets him get away with it, but the public is no longer fooled.

  • wwwoooooooossssshhhhh

Remember H. Ross Perot's "great big sucking sound"?

Turns out that is the white house press corps on their knees before George.

    WWWOOOOOOOOOSSSSHHHHHH

"He's just a real good guy," says the Fox News correspondent, wiping presidential man-juice from his chin, and rubbing a little spittle through his hair.

    WWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHH

"But that Howard Dean guy, now, he was a fruit-loop. Can you imagine what might've happened to this country if he'd been elected?"

    WWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

    [stop cameras]

    baaAAAArghh

The correspondent retches up regurgitated POTUS-cum onto his lapel. Like an over-suckled babe -- or a porn actress after one-too-many cocks uncorked down her throat -- he can no longer keep it all down.

    "God - excuse me..."

    Certainly.

    "What is that noise?"

Oops. Turns out we were wrong. That great big sucking sound?

That is America going down the toilet.

  • The Heartland Project

The simple truths are that a) There were no WMD in Iraq; b) Bush and most of the people around him knew there were no WMD in Iraq; and c) Before the invasion, Saddam Hussein granted UN Weapons Inspectors unrestricted access to suspected sites in Iraq.

These simple truths are part of a growing list of statements that few Republican will ever accept, collected in The Heartland Project on my site. The news media is very conservative -- or perhaps simply unprofessional, but it amounts to the same degree of bad coverage -- and we in the Heartland must reestablish the moral compass that made this country great.

Keep up the good work, Joe Conason.

  • Lies about drones & chemical weapons

Early on administration officials claimed that Saddam had unmaned drones capable of flying nearly 7,000 miles to the U.S. and were capable of releasing chemical weapons on cities. I contacted sources like Jane's Defense Weekly and neither our European allies, nor does the U.S. military have such a drone with such a capability. Even the unmaned drones available today are not designed to carry heavy payloads, have limited range without refueling, and the chemicals would never reach ground level since it would easily be dispersed. Even dispersed at ground level;(as proved during WWI and during the Iran-Iraq war) chemical weapons proved unreliable since they were dependant on weather conditions such as everchanging wind currents. The press could have fact checked this in a few minutes time! The claim was not just wrong but absurd.

  • the real reason Bush invaded Iraq

    God told him to

  • "Real Reality"

    "Real Reality"

Surprised there aren't more postings but the ones I have read are excellent. One of my favorite gurus, Dan Millman, reminds us that if you go out into the street and walk in front of a truck there will be consequences! It doesn't matter whether you believe in trucks or not! The weirdest thing about the Bush Administration's systematic denial of reality is how unsuccessful it has been. They are walking in front of metaphoric trucks everyday.

The string of failures ranging from the botched war effort to Katrina, and the resultant damage, is almost unprecedented in modern presidential history. However, despite low popularity ratings, President Bush has suffered relatively little political damage. In a normal world he would either have been impeached, or at the very least subject to an unending stream of congressional investigations. What is different now?

Hard to say for sure, but I will offer the following possible explanations:

    1. A Republican Party which is so happy to be in power again that it will ignore all of Bush's mistakes.

    2. Having entered what one of the my old acquaintances referred to a "no nothing" period in American society where knowledge and intellect are regarded as unAmerican and ungodly.

    3. A nation of ADD victims whose attention spans have been attenuated by computer games, dumbed down eduacational standards and TV videos and soundbites.

    4. A population shift to western and southern states that are so conservative they are "to the right of Attila the Hun".

    5. The rise of a class of politicians and political operatives which has no goals other than continuation of its power and that of its backers.

However, to aovid ending on too grim a note, just let me point out that no political cycle is eternal, and mercifullly the current one seems to be running out of steam fast!

  • Plenty of wimps to go around

The administration's bold faced lies, the media'a reluctance to hold the administration accountable, the Democrats' pervasive, disgusting complicity...cowards and prevaricators all. Truely, a low point in our history.

Not a single life did Monicagate take, and yet the opposition and media were relentless...silence in the face of distortions, manipulations, and falsehoods trumps everything...how have we become such cowards?

  • A Republican proven to be a liar and a criminal

    What a shock.

  • It's all about job security

The media have been wimps because they are people with careers they don't want to jeopardize. Remember what happened to Dan Rather? The press were already compliant before he was brought down after the fake memos, after that they were scared shitless. Journalism isn't generally a very lucrative field for the majority of reporters, but there are a few who do well, and the White House has been very effective in intimidating reporters to avoid conflict with them. Who knows what backroom manuevering goes on to cow a reporter. A phone call is made to a media executive, perhaps there is some legislation they were anxious to pass, maybe a merger approval, it's not helpful if one of their reporters are antagonistic to the President.

Democrats seem to be in a similar boat. They like their job. They don't want to rock the boat. They don't want to seem too antagonistic. They are scared shitless they'll wind up on the wrong side of a vote and have their vote come back to haunt them in attack ads for being unpatriotic or some distorted negative. Republicans won't run attack ads saying Dems went along with them. It's pathetic. This country wants Dems to fight! Fight back for God's sake! Even clueless, red staters will respect a fighter.
