I remember the summer of 1998 very well. After Clinton's lie was exposed he couldn't stop apologizing for it and the press wouldn't let him alone (or the Republicans). Remember he had been cornered into that lie over a personal matter because his entire Presidency, 1993-1998, had been investigated for acts prior to coming to office. And what have we found since then were the fruits of those investigations? Nothing illegal.
So there really is a bigger issue here. The Republicans couldn't believe that the will of the people was to elect Bill Clinton president in 1992 over George Bush (a war President after the Gulf war). So the Republicans did everything they could to thwart the will of the people by undermining the will of the people and trying to destroy Bill Clinton's Presidency. It didn't work, but it wasted taxpayer dollars and it invaded President Clinton's private life--and the polls showed that in the 1998 mid-term elections.
Unfortunately, this country had two extremely catastrophic events happen very close to one another. The dot.com bubble burst and 9/11. They both cause economic turmoil, huge loss of life and shock. Americans were and are scared. We needed real leaders. Instead of using this opportunity to unify this country and provide real leadership, the people running this country at the time seized this moment as a power grab for their own personal political gain. And there is blame to be spread everywhere for the situation that we are in now, yet until people are willing to accept there part in this we can't move forward.
Thank Joe Conason for continuing to point out President Bush's LIES because they are LIES. Until the press is willing to accept there part in this mess, admit there errors and what they, and begin reporting News and holding this administration accountable, MSM is not worth .25 a day, reading or watching. The Daily Show is mention often as fake news, but John Stewart does a much better job of report news and holding both sides of the aisle accountable than any MSM outlet around today. The New York Times, The Post, NBC, ABC and CBS could learn something from John Stewart (I won't even bother mentioning FOX).
The Democrats authorized Bush to go to War in Iraq and the Patriot Act. Yes, the Republicans play dirty politics and they may have done so out of fear for job security, but look did that fear work for you Dems? You are still in the minority. It might help you if you admit your mistakes, come clean and accept responsibility for YOUR part in this mess.
This country is deep in debt, we are losing jobs, our soldiers are dying in a war that has nothing to do with 9/11 (which happened almost 4 years ago) Osama is still out there, health care is a mess, companies continue to lay people off but they hire new people only as independent contractors and no benefits, wages are stagnant, the environment is crumbling and people is Washington are beholden to corporations. What is going on!
To bring it all home, Clinton's lies were about his person life. Bush's LIES are about life, death, our taxpayer dollars and the very future of this country. Which one is more moral?
