Superscripts
I actually learned to type back in the dark ages, on an old electric typewriter. We did footnotes by turning the carriage halfway up a line-- that is, physically moving the paper up half a line (or down) before typing the number or asterisk, then moving the page back to its normal position. It looked exactly like the superscripts in the Killian memo. It was all done mechanically. It's possible that that's a forgery... but the presence of superscripts isn't any proof of that-- we were always able to do that, and subscripts too. Easy as pie.

Colonel Holmes was there--he said Clinton is a draft dodger
paulpsd7:
"Face it: like Clinton, Cheney did everything in his power to avoid going to Vietnam. I don't criticize him for this; that was an unjust war, and there was no justification for fighting it. However, if you're going to criticize Clinton for being a draft dodger, and if you don't want to appear to be a hypocrite (a big IF, granted), you need to also criticize Cheney."
No, the difference has been explain thouroughly. If you refuse to acknowledge that there was a difference between Cheney's legitimate deferments and Clinton's draft dodging, you're simply dishonest. http://www.geoffmetcalf.com/761.html
"(Honestly, I don't expect you to suddenly discover some personal integrity at this point. Rather, I'm just putting one more nail in your coffin.)"
Sorry, squirt. You may be swinging a hammer, but you're not hitting anything.

A Request For Salon's Web Support Staff.
Could you code up Groenhagen filter? Or perhaps a filter for any gasbag who posts more then 1/2 of all the letters to an article?
At the very least, put the writer name at the top of the letter text rather then the bottom, so we won't have to read the first few words to figure out who it is.
There are worthwhile letters buried in the noise of "sez you!."
It can't be that hard to do, and this long time subscriber would really, really appreciate it.
Especially with these long threads on hot-button issues that bring out the rightwing moonbats like Groenhagen.

Poor reading comprehension there, paul
paulpds7:
"However, according to you, because they were not soldiers prior to becoming journalists, they should not be allowed to report on whether or not the president went AWOL. Have I got that right?"
No, not even close. Rather couldn't hack Marine Corps boot camp, yet claimed he was a former Marine several years later. Blumenthal was born in 1948 yet failed to serve during the Vietnam War years. It's hypocritical of these two losers to question the military service of someone who actually served and fulfilled his obligations.

Grubert - atrue liberal
"Could you code up Groenhagen filter? Or perhaps a filter for any gasbag who posts more then (sic) 1/2 of all the letters to an article?"
That's the liberal way, isn't it? If you can't argue the facts, then silence those you disagree with. Speech codes on campus, the Fairness Doctrine, FACE, etc., etc.

Someone is just plain stupid.....
...and obviously bored.
I'm not naming names, because chances are "he" is not using his. But for chrissake, man. Stick to the subject of the article. Better yet, just shut up and wait to see what the results of the suit are. We know he's not going to settle, so...
and BTW: call me "moonbat" and tell me who you REALLY are and you're likely to be missing some teeth really soon.

Media covering the 2008 campaign
It's bothered me all this time that the secertary to the head of the Alabama National Guard said that the information in the discredited document was true.
Memo to the media covering the 2008 presidential campaign: If derogatory information about a candidate comes out, look first at how the opposition will benefit from the news to find the possible motive for it being leaked.
As for CBS' motives, recall these lines from the movie "Network," as Ned Beatty as network chairman Arthur Jensen lectures Peter Finch as anchorman Howard Beale:
Jensen: "We no longer live in a world of nations and ideologies...The world is a business...And I have chosen you, Mr. Beale, to preach this evangel."
Beale: "But why me?
Jensen: "Because you're on television, dummy."

Hitting a Nerve
This article sure seems to have hit a nerve judging by the number of responses.
Here is my two cents worth.
This reminds me so much of the necklacing (Rather's words from an overseas interview) of J.H. Hatfield when he wrote the book Fortunate Son: George W. Bush and the making of an American President. This excellent book was written before Bush was chosen as president and it covers pretty much all of Bush's shortcomings. The book was not only recalled but it ultimately led to the alleged suicide of the author. I recommend you read the interview with the author on Democracy Now.
I am no fan of Rather, he lost me when he told David Letterman that he was ready to do anything Bush asked of him after 9-11. But I am happy that someone with money and fame is willing to take it on instead of going quietly into the sunset. All the wheeling and dealing of this administration needs to come to light one way or the other. Their shooting the messenger with the media's help has gone on long enough.
