re: What is the point?

"The issue is - were the core facts in Dan Rather's report on w's National Guard service basically on target? Despite the authenticity of some documents, can anyone deny the claims by some that Bush got preferential treatment and didn't complete his service obligation?"
Thank you. Nice to know SOMEONE want's to stay on subject. And to answer your question, there IS NO point to this other than to redeem Mr. Rather's career.
As I said earlier, due to President Carter's changes to the law, the only thing that could happen to President Bush if this were proven true, is that he could get a less than honorable discharge...and he could fairly quickly request an upgraded discharge at that.
So WHY all this? First, to discredit President Bush and second to redeem Mr. Rather's tarnished reputation. That's it...that's ALL this would accomplish.
Still, it WILL be interesting to see what comes of this court case, if anything.

Oh, and Groenhagen
I don't use my real name because people like you scary bastards.

A Sideshow from the Beginning
I remember when Dan broke the story and the sideshow that began immediately after. Like the silly sideshow at the county fair I used to marvel at. The marble under one of three shells was hidden and, fast as lightening, the shells were moved this way and that so, as a child, I had no idea where it really was.
But Dan's story was no game.
I felt like screaming when CBS refused to back up the meat of the piece and allowed 'the documents' to BECOME the story. I so wanted Dan to look straight at the camera and say, "Forget the documents. This story is about how the privileged in our society are held to a different standard and the dereliction of duty by the President of the United States during wartime."
I wish Dan all the very best - this can of worms he's opened is going to shine a much-needed light on the present-day disgrace that has consumed the world of journalism.
Fight the good fight, Dan. And many thanks to Blumenthal for the post.

"You are one dumb bastard and that's all I want to say."
Have the courage to say it using your actual name.

re: It's the other questions, stupid
"as breach of fiduciary duty and tortious interference with contract, it will set in motion an inexorable mechanism that will grind out answers to other questions as well"
Even I, a non-lawyer, picked up on this when I first read about this suit in the LA Times. Tom Cullen of the LAT, for one, just doesn't get it. Yep, Dan wants to go to depositions and discovery to expose CBS as one more GOP-compliant member of the MSM.
Let's just wait to see what comes of this before we start high-fiving, shall we? We really DON'T KNOW what will come of this. It COULD be that President Bush did his time in the Guard completely.

Exactly, you're a coward. You throw rocks at others while hiding behind a tree. How brave! At least Sissy Blumenthal uses his real name as he attacks them

Yes I'm afraid
You are a dangerous, thoughtless psychopath with guns.

Nothing but insults
Paul in KY:
"I'd have liked to have seen you do Marine Basic back in mid 50s like Mr. Rather did. I don't think you'd have lasted past the D.I.s first kick to your tiny balls (IMO)."
Marine basic? Obviously, you never served. Did Rather get kicked in the balls before he wimped out of boot camp? That might explain a few things.

A Setup?
Thanks for another excellent piece from Mr. Blumenthal, and best of luck to Mr. Rather. Mary Mapes asked two compelling questions - 1) how could anyone have forged such pristinely accurate information; and 2) why would anyone have taken such great pains to forge the truth?
There is at least one person who had access to Bush's military records, with a strong motive to provide forged documents to the media. CBS would go with the story, setting itself up to be discredited, thereby casting doubt on a factually credible story, and inflicting collateral damage on Kerry. What person close to Bush has a history of dirty, byzantine political 'ratfucking" going back to the 1970's? Forgive me for being paranoid when it comes to Mr. Rove, but occasionally conspiracy theories turn out to be true.

Come on PEOPLE!
This is getting ridiculous! Quit calling each other names! It doesn't solve anything and detracts from the discussion!
Whether this brings things out in the open or not, it is interesting to speculate what will happen.
WILL Mr. Rather be able to deliver the goods and PROVE President Bush failed to arrive to drill on time? If so, does this mean President Bush will get a Less Than Honorable Discharge?
OR, will Mr. Rather fall on his face and fail to prove anything except that what he thought was real was not.
Should be interesting to see how this turns out!

You don't have to fear guys like Groenhagen. Shit, we have all grown up with them. They are all talk, no action.

CBS
is the real subject here as several posters have pointed out. the trolls have distracted (me included) the content of this thread, but watching CBS scramble to cover their butts should be a treat. Think Katie will cover this?

DAN'S STORY
Obviously the story is true about W going AWOL from the Texas Air National Guard. If it were not true, W would have simply released his service record and that would have been the end of the story.
I think the more important story is to find out how many of the 500 men on the waiting list for the Texas Air National Guard ultimately got drafted to Viet Nam and died as a result. I feel certain that W's special treatment must have caused more that one less well connected young man to die because he got bumped by W.
