Why NOW?
The American people could have used the facts eight or nine years ago. From reputable sources, with eyewitnesses. Why haven't these people spoken out? What were they threatened with, and make no mistake, the threats must have been horrendous to keep them all quiet. I'm sick about the state of this country, and I fear I won't live long enough to see all the damage repaired.
Good for Dan Rather for sticking with this...but what good will it do now? If anything, it will show what blind fools Americans can be when they'd rather see flag-waving and bible-flailing than competent governing.

thank you, Salon
thank you, Salon, for publishing another great article by Sidney Blumenthal.
We knew this story was coming...eventually...but it has been a long wait.

I served on active duty
in the Air Force, and also served in a Tac Fighter Wing in the Air National Guard. Some of Bush's lies are so transparent and enormous, they are almost embarrassing. Some of his lies are subtle, relying on special knowledge to catch them. The issue of his being taken off flying status falls into the later category.
Bush has had a number of explanations for why he was taken off flying status. The one that made me damn near fall over was when he said that he was taken off flying status because his own personal physician was unavailable to administer the physical. ONLY the flight surgeon can certify an individual fit to fly. Bush KNEW this, and he also knew that most people would not catch his bald fucking face lie. Our infotain media nothing about the military, and the military scum who knew Bush was lying were to busy sucking Bush's cock to out him. I wrote numerous letters to the NY TImes and the Washington Post re this - and couldn't get a reply.
I hope that Rather destroys CBS. I hope he bankrupts them. I hope he deposes everyone who hid out - oops! - served with that damn cokehead in the bubbly unit. And I hope that the courageous officer who took Bush off flying status is vindicated. It took a lot of guts for that officer to yank the flying status of a rich and well connected dick weed like Bush. Bush had to have done something really dangerous - not to himself but to others and to his aircraft. It had to have been something along the lines of being stoned behind the controls.

You sound like another Corporal born in 1889 and dead since Aril 1945. Any relation?

Clinton never really made an issue of tying manhood to war, and his supporters didn't, so far as I am aware, accuse people of not supporting the troops if they didn't support the president.
Clinton never made an issue of being a "War president" and didn't pose as one. I can't remember ever seeing a picture of Clinton in a military uniform.
Clinton, so far as I am aware, did not rise on the back of belittling the military service of others while keeping quiet about his lack of a military record.
Contrast that with Bush vs McCain and Bush vs Kerry, and the swiftboat veterans for truth.
Further, the story was known in 2000 and didn't get much traction precisely because at the time, America was at peace and it didn't matter.
In 2004, the year of Rather's report, the issue mattered one heck of a lot, seen as America was in a war of choice at the time and a major issue in those elections was Kerry's war record. Bush was playing the strong-man and he was pretending to be something he was not, while Kerry was, to be frank about it, being slandered.

Can't spell "taliesan" without "lies"

What is the point?
I am always amazed how those with counter points of view tend to post distracting letters that don't address the central issue. They will post something like - hey, did you hear about OJ? - to get everyone off topic.
This is not about Bill Clinton or John Kerry or even forged documents. The issue is - were the core facts in Dan Rather's report on w's National Guard service basically on target? Despite the authenticity of some documents, can anyone deny the claims by some that Bush got preferential treatment and didn't complete his service obligation?
I'm amazed at how quick some are to discredit John Kerry's distinguished service on the battlefield while at the same time defend w's questionable service record. In w's case they claim there is no proof and yet with no substantiated evidence they are ready to repeat fallacious accounts about a true American hero.
Anyway, I too am getting off message. I would submit that unless someone can further the discussion about w's Military Service, or lack there of, don't bother posting.

Groenhagen,
hiding out in a bubbly unit is NOT serving; it is hiding out. Bush claimed that at the time he hid out - oops ! - signed up for the bubbly unit, all he wanted to do was fly.
It is my understanding that at the time, the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines were all hiring. If dick weed Bush had really wanted to fly, he was in the wrong place.

Okay, I hadn't seen those pictures before, but then, like I said, Clinton hadn't exactly made a big deal about it.
Now, the thing that gets me is, first of all I have been reasonably civil towards you and you have adressed every post to me with accusing me of being a liar. Frankly I think you are projecting.
I think you have not served a single minute the military I think you are lying about your service and I think that the reason you are so upset about this story is because it strikes a very personal nerve.
I am unashamed to say I haven't served in America's military, and I do not pretend to have served but your hysterical, harsh tone strikes me as being that of someone faking being something they are not.
I do not think you see this as being a case of hypocrisy. I think you see the link to yourself, and I think your repeated accusations of me being a liar, is nothing short of pure projectionism.
