What the hell is a page anyway?
Can't these right wing religous perverts be equipped with cell phones? I think the whole concept of the page has been replaced by the pager and the cellphone. Sex is the only remaining use for these kids. They are like 45 rpm records when no one any longer has any record players.

it slices it dices
Mr. Blumenthal has done it again - hit the nail, clear and hard, on the head. A sharp, terse executive summary of foolishness dragging hypocrisy and hubris all over town. Kind of like every other day in this evil empire. Sydney's the best.

Sexual predator?
Mark Foley is a scoundrel, a dirty old man, but really, a predator?
Do we do our side a favor with this sort of overly dramatic, hysterical chest pounding?
The issue here is unethical abuse of power, and sexual harrassment of legal age (if creepily young) adults, despite the programs in place to prevent that sort of behavior. Or perhaps Mr. Blumenthal knows something we don't know?

all this distracts us from the war, our spineless Senate etc.
Yes it's the coverup that will get them. And yes Foley was crazy and sick to send these e-mails. But the truth is that pages have been subjected to propositions and come ons from old congressional queens for at least forty years. It was axiomatic even - pages get hit on. Why is it headlines at this particular moment? Democrats should just be quiet and let the Republicans spew forth about this. It is too bad that this sordid story has moved the interest away from the monumental disaster, killing thousands, in Iraq, and the attention that should be given the Senate's recent vote to reject provisions of the Geneva Convention, thus allowing our wise president to detain indefinitely, without representation, just about anyone. Some things are serious and some..not so serious.

95 Theses Permanently Nailed To The Door
We need to have an on-going catalogue of crimes, lies, and maladministration by the Republicans here on Salon.
On the Salon home page, every day, we need a list of outrages, so that we can quit flipping away from torture and dungeons to congressional hard-ons to whatever comes next. Please make a list of one-line sin summaries, and keep it up to date.
Please let us comment on it, and suggest additions, just as we comment on regular Salon articles. But keep it up there, as you have kept the Abu G. photos.

Coverup
As someone who live outside of the USA who reads about your political system, school shootings, giving torture the OK, the angrier I become. What kind of society are your politicians breeding?
what will it take for the general puiblic to wake up and do something about these people who make decisions that effect the rest of the world's people.
The fact that this person Foley is gay is not the questtion, it is that others in the GOP were quite happy to cover up his stupid behaviour for one reason only POWER: How does that saying go abosolute power destroys absolutely !!!!
All I can think of is how much the USA today resembles ancient Rome. The Romans had it all, they thought they could rule the world but they became a greedy, corrupt, immoral, fat and lazy society, and they were over run by the Barbarians. Lets hope that History doesn't repeat it self with Emperor G.W.

I second timbuktom
We need to have an on-going catalogue of crimes, lies, and maladministration by the Republicans here on Salon.
That way, when we wake up in a couple of years to the Fourth Reich, we won't be able to say we didn't see it coming.

What's Important?
Of course the war, the congressional sanctioning of torture, mishandling of Katrina, NSA spying etc. are the real issues, but we are dealing with a sound-bite- national enquirer mentality in the U.S. and if this is what it takes to bring these hypocritical fascists to their knees then so be it.

Wag the Dog--Republican Style
So this is how the Bush Administration averts our attention from the atrocities of Global War and the abrogation of human rights for all. I cannot believe the stupidity of the U.S. populace to not see through the hypocrisy of this whole affair. Once again, the McMedia averts it eyes and spews the lies fed them by the Corporate-owned politicians. The fact that the Democrats have not blown this whole fiasco into the most robust assault on the fanatics holding this country hostage just demonstrates their own complicity in the generalized corruption running rampant in Wash. D.C. How does this happen? How can one man(?), as puppisant of the U.S., control the world's most powerful military(I am not proud of this fact of a powerful military) and tell it, against the will and advice of the Field Commanders, to invade another country, and continue to threaten Iran and N. Korea and Venezuela(Hugo Chavez spoke more truth than hype at the UN) while the military wimps stand by and salute. They won't speak until they retire, then are cast aside as irrelevant. The True Heroes are those who refuse to return to Iraq and declare themselves Conscientious Objectors. That takes more courage than following the orders of a War Criminal.
So Mark Foley is gay. So What! He propositioned (allegedly) some young pages and was caught, but allowed to continue in the name of maintaining Power for the Reigning Party. When the lying stops there will be a great silence across the land, for politicians will not be speaking.
Bring on the Special Prosecutors and let them interview EVERYONE under oath, and see who folds. Does waterboarding apply in this case?
Peace,
John

The coverup.
Machiavellianism has been defined in the psychological literature as the "extent to which an individual feels any means, no matter how unscrupulous, can justifiably be used to achieve and retain power." Republicans are very good at this game, and Democrats, sadly, are not. It has been the basic fact of governmental power in this country for years.
We already knew that Republicans would kill American soliders for electoral advantage, as they did in Vietnam for four years and do in Iraq today. We knew they would campaign against civil rights when white Southeners could murder blacks with impunity. We knew they would slime military heros to elect draft dodgers. Now it turns out that they will also protect pedophiles. After all the shameless things Republicans have done over the years, it is ironic that this is the one people seem to get upset about.
Let us hope that Democrats will lose their scruples and go after the apparent nest of homosexual Republican congressmen and congressional staffers who have been enabling Tom Foley for years. Think that would play in the red states? It doesn't have to be rational, moral or even true as long as it works. (see above)
