"Who I'd like to meet: Al Capone, Hitler"

On his MySpace page, Kenneth Eastridge expressed excitement to be leaving "the gay ass Army." Now he is in prison for involvement in a murder.

The letters thread is now closed.

wow

Now we accept white supremacists in the army. Greeeaaat.

A certain amount of this has ALWAYS been in the military.

Curious that the guy likes Al Capone. He isn't a "true American." He is Italian. The real Klansmen hate anybody who isn't their variety of "white."

Nevertheless, there's always been a racist element in the Army. They like killing. They get to do it for an organization that needs killers. In other news, water is wet and the sky is occasionally blue.

This guy's just...

...a white supremacist asshole. With any luck, he'll end up back in prison where he can be as antisocial as he wants.

scary

what's just as scary is he has 21 freinds.

How does the Army permit SS twin...

...lightning bolts on one of their soldier's arms?

I was prepared to dislike this kid...

...but before judging him you should read the other article - this is a kid who never had a chance at any point.

(For example, he really didn't know what all his tattoos were except that they were "bad"...)

I'm in no way condoning his actions but he was basically doomed from the word "go", starting with irresponsible parenting (what sort of family leaves loaded rifles around with a 12-year old who's never been trained in their use?) and continuing with being broken by the army.

(This is a great series, Salon!!!)

Al Capone

was born in Brooklyn.

And this kid doesn't sound much different than that group of kids in high school who wear trench coats and very carefully carry around black duffel bags and think it's "cool" to like gangsters and extremists. He didn't have a chance to mature or develop healthy relationships and deal with the PTSD he had before he went into the army.

Al Capone

I've read extensively about the man, and can say with almost absolute certainty that Al Capone would not like this guy. Nor would Eastridge really like Al Capone, if he actually knew anything about him. And if Eastridge, Hitler and Al Capone were all somehow in the same room, Capone would probably beat the hell out of both of them. Just further proof that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and a little knowledge coupled with military training is an extremely dangerous tihng.

You believe this?

(For example, he really didn't know what all his tattoos were except that they were "bad"...)

Bullshit. If you believe that then you have been manipulated.

Oh goody...

Another chance for Salon readers to feel morally and intellectually superior and sit around patting themselves on the back. Don't forget to mention how horrible the army is and how all soldiers are violent thugs that don't appreciate wine and jazz like you do.
