thank you for primary sources
Is this a new feature? I love it. Let the players speak for themselves so that we may judge them accordingly.
P.S. I find it telling that I never heard Byrd's speech back then, and believe me--I was paying attention.

"when the people of Iraq are liberated, we will again have written another chapter in the glorious history of the United States of America"
Is the operative quote. Blow it up big, repeat it often, put it in ads, make sure nobody forgets that this foreign policy genius said it.

Senator Byrd speaks for me
And I think Senator McCain lies when he says it is incredibly difficult to send young men and woman into Iraq. For him and for George Bush, it has been incredibly easy to send them there and keep them there beyond their contractual obligations. It is good to see in black and white the glaring lie that took us to war and turned out to be wrong. There were not tons of weapons of mass distruction. I really hope we don't get McCain for president. I wonder who his running mate will be. He's got all this time to think about it and we haven't heard a peep from the press about who's being considered.

As I look back
at matt cliffs headline I am reminded of the glorious fatherland propaganda of Hitlers Third Reich and the build up to wwII. Since Neocons have written books about this being wwIII I can't help but think it was all preconcieved with malice aforethought. McCain did toe the line after Bush stabbed him in the back during the 2000 primaries. He's a party man, but I sence there is even more to it than that. I long to read the story 30 years from now when hopefully the files a laid open and there are no more secrets about this presidency.

But half of you threw rocks at the man for his prior transgressions
All over the liberal blogs Byrd was raked over the coals for his views in the 1940's. He was ignored because of it. You shouldn't be shocked when 5 years after your own denigration of him, nothing's changed.

No, you weren't. I remember Byrd's speech being the biggest story of the day, although the context of the coverage was "senile old fart is the only Senator who opposes our Glorious Leader's Empire."

What crap
The majority of his speech is about liberating people, and then he tosses in that little sentence about being sure we'll find WMDs. From the beginning, supporters of this war just could not make up their mind as to what it was about. No wonder very little good has come of it.
It also saddens me that we only run around "liberating" people when there is something in it for us. We are not an altruistic nation and warmongers need to stop trying to claim we are.

Hang This Speech Around McCain's Neck
This speech should be hung around McCain's neck like an albatross. It should be brought up at every Q&A and press conference from now until election day. The journalists who don't do this are not worthy of the title.

Thank you Robert C.
West Virginia has a long tradition of thoughtful, literate people. However, the extractive industries have much to gain by promulgating an image of the "hillbilly" as an inbred, ignorant redneck ingrate. The myth of the hillbilly overshadows the reality of who most West Virginians really are. So, it was easy for the rest of the country to dismiss Byrd's excellent refutation of the so-called "rationale" leading up to the Iraq war as the ramblings of a senile hillbilly.
I am a West Virginian, born and bred -- of stock which settled the Appalachians in the 1600s to escape the humiliation and poverty of England's lower classes. I was taught to never forget why my ancestors sought freedom in these stark, steep mountains -- even if we all lost track of their exact names. Robert C. hails from a similar tradition. Freedom does not just mean freedom to become rich, it means the freedom to live an honest, ethical life treating yourself and others with dignity.
Thank you Senator Byrd. I am proud to be a constituent!

TWO DEM. CANDIDATES LISTENED TO THE WRONG SPEECH -- ONE BELIEVED IT
Senator Byrd gave two historic speeches on the Iraq war -- one a vain attempt to persuade his colleagues not to give George Bush the authority to invade, the short one repreinted today when the invasion occurred. And Hillary Clinton followed the advice of John McCain. She was there, she heard truth and lies, and could not, or would not, know the difference. She will not admit error in her choice or her vote. She is unfit, on the basis of this issue alone, to become our President. Instead of begging for our forgiveness, she whines that she is a victim of her press coverage. Her "experience" was a part of our unfortunate recent history. We should learn from it, and dare not repeat it.

nation has stood for freedom and democracy, even at the risk and loss of American lives, so that all might enjoy the same privileges
Perhaps there is a difference between standing for freedom and democracy, leading and promoting freedom and democracy for oppressed people, and imposing it with cruise missles and 1000lb bombs. If the latter is the correct answer, the there is alot more bombing and killing that must be done.

"Events will prove one of us correct in the next few days."
And it wasn't you, John.
"But I rely on history as my guide to the future..."
Never fight a land war in Asia.
We're doing the same goddamn thing as in Vietnam, but this time it's sand instead of jungle.

John McCain and Robert Byrd
WhAt a pathetic load of Horse Feathers from McCain. The only thing that partly redeems him is that he partly acknowledged that he really didn't know what he was talking about.
Are people really prepared to elect such a man?
-
"Events will prove one of us correct in the next few days."
McCain: "Events will prove one of us correct in the next few days."
"The next few days"? If he really meant that, it shows a serious lack of understanding of the complicated effects of major military actions. Even "Mission Accomplished" didn't happen until May 1st.
Of course, it took far less than the 5 years between then and now to prove that it was Senator Byrd who was right. But McCain has evidently not noticed the proof yet.
And as for the debate he claimed happened, who's he kidding? Anyone who disagreed with the Bush Administration and their enablers was ignored, insulted, or dismissed. And many of the loudest and most insulting and dismissive voices are still getting paid for their oh-so-serious opinions, while many of those who were proven correct are still ignored.
