The request for additional troops is based on the needs to carry out a particular order. The boss provides the goal, the subordinate says "this is what I need to accomplish the goal". The Boss either a)provides the subordinate with his stated needs to acheive the goals, b) modifies the goals to reflect the resources that can be provided, or c) replaces the subordinate with someone that can get the job done with fewer resources (or at least says they can).
If the boss trusts the subordinate, than the focus is on A and B. This is when the cost/benefit analysis is done. What are the options for goals - Win, Withdraw, Change tactics - and what are the costs of achieving each goal.
Afghansistan doesn't seem ready for democracy. What are the other options?
"It is fine for generals and civilians to ask for more resources. One of their responsibilities is to speak truth to power if they think they need more resources to accomplish the mission. To do that in public is not appropriate, though. The president deserves to have these issues debated in private. Whoever leaked Gen. McChrystal's memorandum acted unfairly and unprofessionally."
Correct me if I am wrong, but General McChrystal was hand picked by Obama to lead the war effort in Afganistan. It also happens to be one of the very few job assignments made by this Administration that makes a lot of sense. This is not just "another general"...General McChrystal is THE military expert on anti-terrorism in the service today. Together with Gen. Petreaus assigned to Afganistan last August by Bush, we have two men that have any chance of completing a tremendously difficult task. Dern, I forgot about other experts who have the Presidents ear...Joey Biden..the master global strategist who wanted to break up Iraq into three pieces. And now he is pushing for "surgical" warfare in Afganistan. I think Joey needs some surgery to connect some lose ends in his brain.
So, what do we have. We have a pentagon that feels it is abandoned by the POTUS. Leaks usually come for politicians, staff and other disgruntled people. It is rare, indeed, to see the military embarass the President of the United States.
You can tell much about a President by his focus..by his daily activities calendar. Obama is making preparations for pushing through the government takeover of healthcare, Cap & Trade legislation, Amnesty for illegals, ohh..and I almost forgot, a "trip to Denmark to get the Olympics held in Chicago.
As far as Afganistan, the Commander In Chief has spoken with his chosen general.."once"... in the past 70 days! Another lie..another fib...another, distortion of the facts, another "distraction"...maybe.. but not according to the general. What is going on in the White House. Who is running the store? Ya own the store, Barrack..the campaign, the community organizing is over...you won! Stop the speeches and do some WORK!

We helped destroy that country. To hell with us if we can't fix it.
But I see that we're probably heading to a repeat of 1989.
I was among the anti-war Americans who wholeheartedly supported our exit from Afghanistan in 1989.
Looks like we're going to make the same mistake again, only this time we'll be twice as damned and the blowback from leaving the country in ruins will probably end up being twice as bad.
I guess we can always choose not to cover the bloodbath that will follow our departure.
The musicians will have to bury their instruments again. The men will have to shave their beards or face death.
The women -- let's not even talk about women.
Let's just start grieving for them right now, because know exactly what's going to happen to the women after we leave.
It's going to be ugly and horrific and it's best if the media just refuse to cover it, period.
I certainly don't expect to see it covered in Salon.

A few years ago, a common refrain among liberals was that the conservatives, neoconservatives and assorted Bush-worshippers who declared support for the invasion and occupation of Iraq should enlist in the U.S. military.
Now, having wept tears of joy over the election of Obama - a man who, as a presidential candidate, very clearly stated his intention to increase the American military presence in Afghanistan - yesterday's indignant anti-war dissidents have transformed themselves into cheerleaders for the bloody American empire.
Is it any wonder shut up or enlist isn't a popular retort among The Democratic Faithful these days?
