Meet the man who changed Glenn Beck's life

Cleon Skousen was a right-wing crank whom even conservatives despised. Then Beck discovered him

SophistSophist

I'm supposing 'DL' is code for Down Low DL13? Is it impolite for me to inquire?

Communism Lasts Forever

Well DL13 I'd much appreciate you pointing out to me any hate filled remarks that you have notated either I'm a dummy when it comes to hate or I hate and I don't know it. Can you help a brother out?

Friday, September 18, 2009 03:34 PM

Well

Knock yourself out.

Glenn Beck and Cleon Skousen

After reading the hate-filled racist remarks of some of those in this post I'm wondering if maybe Skousen might really have something to say. I will have to check it out. Thanks for the info.

George Wythe University has 150 students. Wow.

Nor is it currently accredited.

On the other hand, I just now noticed:

The Wikipedia article on George Wythe University references a GWC article by James C. Ure.

If the same James Ure I met, a law student, he was the most outstanding teacher of the Bible (he and others were conducting a Bible study night) I have ever known, even though he was in his mid-twenties.

I have completely changed my opinion just now.

VERBAL MASTURBATION

THIS IS THE MOST HUMOROUS, (BECAUSE IT IS SO RIDICULOUS), ARTICLE I HAVE READ IN A LONG, LONG TIME. I WILL KEEP A COPY OF IT TO READ WHEN I AM HAVING A BAD DAY. IT WILL CHEER ME UP THAT'S FOR SURE. KNOWING THAT IF ANYONE CAN ACTUALLY BELIEVE THIS CRAP, THEY WILL NEVER BE A CHALLENGE TO A MEANINGFUL CAUSE THE REST OF THEIR LIFE. THEY WILL CHERISH A COPY TO READ WHEN THEY NEED A REINFORCEMENT FIX FOR THEIR LOONEY BELIEFS. THIS ARTICLE IS “VERBAL MASTURBATION” TO THE LOONY TUNES OF OUR TIME, WHO SUCK UP THIS KIND OF PROGRESSIVE FICTION AND HELP THE WRITER PAY HIS BILLS, WHO, NO DOUBT IS LAUGHING ALONG WITH ME.

Which is the more dangerous?

Let us stipulate that Beck is a fascist, a gullible stooge for this obscure fight-wing crank Skousen, whom most of us have never heard of before.

By his own admission in two autobiographical works, Barack Obama is indebted to and warmly embraces the social analysis and action program of the far better known left-wing crank, Saul Alinsky.

Both of these "cranks" are authoritarians, deeply opposed to the liberal foundations of our society and government, supremely confident that they can see truth to which others are blind and were bent on imposing their utopian visions by whatever means necessary.

Beck, the purported/assumed apostle of Skousen, is a sublimely glib talk show host and entertainer.

Obama, the acknowledged admirer of Alinsky, is the sublimely glib occupant of the White House.

Which of these two situations is more deserving of concern from the perspective of those who, like our founding fathers, value life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, above all other political values?

If Alinsky/Obama is not your answer, you need to go back and take Logic 101 again.

Totalitarianism is Bad

I watch Glenn Beck often and do not remember him mentioning Skousen by name (though he may have in passing). Rather than glorifying Skousen, the person, his focus was on the difference between considering basic rights and freedoms as gifts granted by a benevolent, omnipotent State, versus considering basic rights and freedoms as gifts granted by God, or Nature (take your pick).

In non-religious terms, freedom should be the natural human state, and the state of society. Freedom should be the rule, not the exception. Freedom shouldn't be sacrificed for SECURITY - sound familiar? Whether it's security from terrorism, or security from health problems, or security from losing your job, or having your house foreclosed, or your car repossessed. Orwell's 1984 and Huxley's Brave New World don't seem quite as far-fetched as they did when I first read them.

In contrast to Beck's references to specific ideas within a specific book, Hillary Clinton recently provided effusive, hagiographic praise of Margaret Sanger (the person). I guess this means Hillary Clinton is a racist, elitist, eugenicist who would make Himmler proud.

No, OnTheBeat, scared shitless is hardly it

How about tired of the smell of mendacity? Or maybe that is your bag leaking.

Friday, September 18, 2009 04:36 AM

Scared shitless!

Liberals obviously fear Beck. Rightfully so. He exposes the Left for what they are and gets beyond the silence and appeasement of the MSM. He's been more effectivee than O'Reilly and Hannity. He'll get even more-so. Good Job, Beck!

Thank you my friend. What a spot-on reading of the situation. :-) Pardon me if I don't elaborate more. I have a very bad habit of falling asleep on the sofa in my den while reading, and then waking up in the middle of the night, checking Salon comments, then going to bed. This is one of those times.

I see that Emptyhead hasn't returned to make good on the plans to meet "in person" for a "discussion." I mean, did any of us think he would? He came here to fling insults and proclaim his "superiority," not have any discourse. Yeah, brave. And now, he disappears. True to form, Emptyhead, so true to form.

Birds of a feather

Remember how in the 60s the various factions of the (actual) Reds would call each other "not pristine enough." (I'm sure you do!) Anyway, the same is true about Conservative conspiracisms. Click on my blue signature link to check out an "open letter to Glenn Beck" by Alex Jones.

Illuminating. (And, after a fashion, Jones seems as intellectually internally consistent as any promulgator of political doctine (/"anti-doctine"). No?)

Link to scholarly debunking of Skousen's modus operandi

Where have all the 'Editors' Choice' awards gone?

I know I arrived late to the thread, but there are some 'Whammy Award' worthy rips here. Salon might mark this period of Re-Birthing with a new letters category: 'Idiots' Best'. Lighten up, Joan & Co., you've got yourself a committed audience of far-right corn nutters! Welcome them!

Greenwald has conscientiousness covered, & what's wrong with a little fun? Commemorate the mighty battle of words here. It's a small but cozy comfort for me to arrive here, where liberals act decisively, strike quickly & without apology.

Not surprisingly, TV is a bummer parade. It is not for naught called an Idiot Box, & it is w/familiar nausea I watch an un-cynical lamby, Joe Klein for example, walk open-eyed into Morning Joke's falsely laid premise, his child-sized bait-&-switch, to be promptly flayed & snarked, as Joe 'proves' his non-analogy correct & cuts to commercial. Meanwhile Barnacle, Mika & Fill-In-The-Liberal-To-Outnumber-Savy-Joe-4-to-1 are completely unaware, continue to be happy with their 'reasonable' Republican, even as he announced his verdict that the Acorn tapes could only mean that, "Acorn is tied to the President, so this is bad news for him." How I wish Mika had said, 'not to mention really bad news for Michael Vitter!'

Please! As a fan I ask that you embrace threads that showcase the War of Words 2009: Wit vs Witless.

With humble gratitude to D4, Trope & the many - today, I read some ripping good posts,'ball odor brush off' aloud to cheer up 'concerned for country' liberal neighbors, to good effect. I am your fan-club.
