I truly "support" Democrats being elected in 2010 and 2012. I am a "fierce advocate" of the Democratic Party after all. I know that I have promised you my support over the past few decades and have done my best to follow through.
Even now I am "working towards" a financial donation to the Party. I do have to ask for your "patience" though, because as a gay man, my family and I are still second class citizens and are having to funnel our resources towards causes that protect and honor our basic civil rights. "We have a lot on our plate."
We are "proceeding" towards lifting the denial of funds to the DNC and are "developing a strategy" that will get us there by the end of Obama's time at the White House. As a matter of fact, my family has planned several "meetings" to discuss these very important donations and will be sending out a press release shortly to announce our "cocktail party" celebrating Democracy.
Thanks for understanding. And hang in there!
Sincerely,
Liam
maybe they should have separate drinking fountains for gay people too ?
"So we're not deserving of equal rights because not enough of us have been killed yet by kooks and gay bashers?"
A claim of descrimination requires some proof.
I could easily collect a bunch of newspaper articles about white middle-aged straights who were brutally murdered...and what exactly would that accomplish?
If you don't have murder/assault statistics that show bias, you are in a very weak lobbying position.
He can't do anything in his first term but re-elect him and he'll do the right thing. Right? Just keep supporting him and not holding him accountable and I'm sure he won't take that for granted.
Your post and the millions of other similar ones that fill the internet making light of our civil rights struggle and the bigotry we face is proof enough of the bigotry itself. I suppose, though, that it's a sign of progress when the haters feel compelled to deny the bigotry. Gone are the good old days of your intellectual honesty when you just called us faggots, moral abominations and freaks of nature. Anyway, there are plenty of statistics that show that sexual orientation is a leading motivator for hate crime violence (and it ain't gays beating up on straights because they're straight) and there would be even more if the federal government ever got around to including sexual orientation in the hate crime categories that are already on the books (race, religion and national origin). Then there's the fact that violence against gays (because they're gay) often goes unreported because the victims fear "outing" themselves in their community by reporting it.
no one-liner this time. You really ought to get a medium for
your humor. comic book?
as far as this topic goes, remember the song
Never Smile at a Crocodile
No, you can't get friendly with a Crocodile
Forget it.
As usual, Barack Obama said all the right things, but actions remain to be seen.
The unfortunate dilemma for LGBT folks is that if Obama fails and is discredited, it is not inconcievable that an extreme right wing government could come to power, and there is no doubt LGBT people will singled out for persecution.
It was shocking to see how the "T" was treated. Why? Intolerance maybe. Look up John Aravosis if you want to see truly repulsive dismissal and contempt.
Those of us who voted for and still support Ralph Nader are not disappointed, because we were told two years ago by Ralph, after his meeting with Obama, that the man has no "fortitude".
Though not in the LGBT group, I am one with them, and I feel one with others who expected Obama to change our imperial projections of military power, treat Wall Street with the contempt and prosecutions it deserves and restore the Constitution's protections for civil liberties.
Patience will not work with BO. He is not principled. He does not stand by his words, shown repeatedly in every political context. He is a appeaser. He does not fight.
Robert Reich wrote in Salon that BO needs your help! I say help him by letting him know that patience does not work any more than it did in the fight for racial equality.
BUMP!
(Franken, D-MN's first US Senate bill)
The president himself frames issues of LGBT equality in terms of other civil rights battles.
The LGBT population makes a grave mistake by laser focusing on marriage, DOMA and Don't Ask Don't Tell--all of which affect only segments of gay Americans. Focus instead on sweeping federal protections.
There is a movement to amend the 1964 Civil Rights Act to include sexual orientation and gender identity. This would offer federal protections against discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodation, obtaining credit, etc. (find out more at thepoweronline.org)
40 years after Stonewall, there are ZERO federal protections for LGBT Americans. ZERO! Corporate America and several individual cities and states are much more advanced on this issue than Uncle Sam.
An American citizen's rights shouldn't depend on where he or she lives or works. Anyone who thinks the White House is doing a great job should look at the big picture. It's a disgrace.
President Obama should lead, not cower. And we should put his feet to the fire.
1992..Bill Clinton and total Democratic control of Congress. Promises Galore and we end up with "Don't ask Don't tell". 17 years late what do we have? More promises from Obama and the Democrats in Congress, and diddly squat for action! Gay issues simply aren't on the priorty list of our African American Discriminator in Chief, and the Democrats in Congress. Until Obama and the Democrats in Congress know that there will be a price to pay at the polls for their lies and betrayal the discrimination in the military will continue and our civil rights in regard to marriage, or civil unions, will continue to be violated. The 300 prominent gays who played the dupes going to Obama's little party would have served the gay community much better by refusing to show up until Obama keeps his promises. Now he thinks he's placated us and can safely put us to the back of the bus! What every gay man and woman in this country needs to do is cut off all contribution and support to the Democratic party until we have an end to discrimination in the military and our civil right in regard to marriage. And we need to make it clear that if that doesn't happen before the 2010 elections our money and votes will go to the opponents of every Democratic Congressman and Senator up for election. In politics if lies and betrayal aren't punished at the polls they just continue!!!!
