Obama woos LGBT leaders

The president welcomes 300 prominent gays to the White House. But when will his rhetoric translate into action?

The letters thread is now closed.

@Klytus, if you can think this -

"peeing in public is strictly forbidden. but enforcement is lax -- John Anderson"
- is funny -
My hand of friendship is out to you.

@gedicht

Some of you trolls are truly going baroque these days in your desperate and flailing homophobia. Guess you have no other choice, since we gays and our allies have thoroughly knocked down all your simpler arguments against our humanity and worthiness of legal equality.

It's a step

It's a step. At least Obama appears to be embracing the GLBT community to some degree, which is good, since we've been getting our collective faces slapped since November.

I understand that he doesn't want to go full steam on GLBT rights in light of the economy and everything that entails. I understand that. But- he could still do something. As in, overturn DADT. That's a no-brainer. Losing service members who speak Arabic in a time of war solely due to their sexual orientation is absurd.

I can see both sides of this- those of us in the GLBT community who can be patient, and those who are fed up. Frankly, it's fucking infuriating to languish with 2nd class status for so long. Civil equality in this country moves at a glacial pace- but we can't seem to move fast enough when there's money to be made or countries to bomb.

You mean the $780 billiion in corporate welfare that went to the people who paid for Obama's campaign didn't fix the economy?

Behind those larger donations is a phalanx of more than 500 Obama “bundlers,” fund-raisers who have each collected contributions totaling $50,000 or more. Many of the bundlers come from industries with critical interests in Washington. Nearly three dozen of the bundlers have raised more than $500,000 each, including more than a half-dozen who have passed the $1 million mark and one or two who have exceeded $2 million, according to interviews with fund-raisers.

An analysis of campaign finance records shows that about two-thirds of his bundlers are concentrated in four major industries: law, securities and investments, real estate and entertainment. Lawyers make up the largest group, numbering roughly 130, with many of them working for firms that also have lobbying arms. At least 100 Obama bundlers are top executives or brokers from investment businesses: nearly two dozen work for financial titans like Lehman Brothers, Goldman Sachs or Citigroup. About 40 others come from the real estate industry.

@Blueflash

AMEN to that!

Plus, I don't like being lectured to by the liner notes of a Black Eyed Peas CD.

40%? I'm 100% gay (and I am unanimous in this!).

As recently as three weeks ago, the Pentagon spokesman wasn't aware of any movement on DADT, and the Obama Administration's defense(!) of DOMA used some surprising language. So Obama needs more than words, and we need more than patience.

Thanks to the mishandling of both issues by the Clinton Administration, it will require new legislation to overturn both, but Obama could halt implementation of DADT pending action by the Congress.

If interracial marriage had been "left up to the states," it would probably still be illegal in some places in this country, yet many Democrats still hide behind this dodge when it comes to equal rights for all Americans.

@icemilkcoffe

I'm not your gay brother. We've been told to wait for one reason or another for some forty years now. Enough is enough. Nor are we so stupid as to imagine that those like you who keep telling us to wait were ever or ever will be our friends.

LGBT

SO we have a President who woos a group that define themselves by one percent of who they are . . ., defined by how they "get off". The nice thing is all of that is a passive population control measure, the voluntary (or involuntary) adoption of non-reproductive lifestyles will limit the growth of non productive individuals. So just as abortion does that, the adoption of such a lifestyle does it without the costs associated with medical procedures. The same costs will be saved when the US allows a form of voluntary suicide (suicide costs money, non-reproductive lifestyles saves same). The end state desirable is a smaller population with controlled reproductive access. With too many mouths to feed worldwide the US should be leading the way with a dynamic population reduction program. Global warming is a symptom of the plague of mankind, our regime should be aligning itself with the ELF and NAMBLA to reduce our human footprint on a otherwise pristine world.

@Blueflash

I'm not denying your reality or hating gays...just asking a simple question relating to overall risk of murder for ALL groups in the US.

We've been to this Rodeo Before!!!!

1992..Bill Clinton and total Democratic control of Congress. Promises Galore and we end up with "Don't ask Don't tell". 17 years late what do we have? More promises from Obama and the Democrats in Congress, and diddly squat for action! Gay issues simply aren't on the priorty list of our African American Discriminator in Chief, and the Democrats in Congress. Until Obama and the Democrats in Congress know that there will be a price to pay at the polls for their lies and betrayal the discrimination in the military will continue and our civil rights in regard to marriage, or civil unions, will continue to be violated. The 300 prominent gays who played the dupes going to Obama's little party would have served the gay community much better by refusing to show up until Obama keeps his promises. Now he thinks he's placated us and can safely put us to the back of the bus! What every gay man and woman in this country needs to do is cut off all contribution and support to the Democratic party until we have an end to discrimination in the military and our civil right in regard to marriage. And we need to make it clear that if that doesn't happen before the 2010 elections our money and votes will go to the opponents of every Democratic Congressman and Senator up for election. In politics if lies and betrayal aren't punished at the polls they just continue!!!!
