There is no over reaction

If you notice, GM's bankrupcy, and the plane crash have buried the story. I'm not gloating, but I think it's time you BO supporters realize that Obama is not a liberal-- in fact, the media is not even really liberal, but, rather, they are front men lawyers for extremely wealthy bankers that are really running things. Abortion is on the way back burner-- and it's not going to be overturned anyway. Get real girls.

on thecontrary

This is the reaping of what Terry and his cohorts have sown. After the hyperbolic rhetoric and the incitement to frenzy, Terry and others have created the monster who killed a man in church.

Own it.

@ reallynow

Yes, you've figured it out -- I'm secretly a front-man lawyer for wealthy bankers. (Which reminds me, given that I'm actually a lawyer for very rich bankers, I need to ask Salon for a raise.)

Just to summarize Terry's reaction

Terrorism isn't to be condemned if it's against those who we deem as acceptable targets. When it comes down to it, religious zealots are all the same. Randall Terry and Bin Laden are kindred spirits who believe the end justifies the means.

And if the shooter was an Arab of the Moslem faith...

we'd be on Code Purple or some-such nonsense and these Bible-thumpers would be thundering from their pulpits about how such evil terrorists must be thrown out of the country in the name of our "homeland security."

When you convince yourself that a fetus is the same thing as a sentient living person, I guess you can go for this "eye for an eye" crap, although Jesus did say something about turning the other cheek and loving your enemies (and not judging lest ye be judged). In the end, the entire anti-abortion argument is based on two very shaky foundations: 1) that a fetus has a soul, and is therefore just like you and me reading this article, and 2) that somehow these fetuses are "innocent" and therefore they cannot be aborted. The first point fails on the fact that no evidence of a "soul" exists and it is a conjecture, not a tangible defensible proposition on which to base law. The second fails on Christian doctrine, which maintains "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God", i.e. we are all born with Original Sin and are therefore NOT innocent, but must be both baptized and then live a proper Christian life if we are to enter the Kingdom of God.

Abortion is a serious decision that should be made by the woman involved and anyone whom she feels she should consult. That is how things stand now, and that is the way it should remain.

About that Gallup poll

Mike, you're twisting Gallup's results. If you read the full report, the most interesting stat was not the majority who call themselves pro-life.

Gallup asked a binary question, life or choice, then a three-parter with a "sometimes" option in the middle, then a four-parter: (1) always illegal; (2) mostly illegal; (3) mostly legal; (4) always legal.

By 60:40, the public supports (1) and (2) over (3) and (4). 3&4 are the pro-choice, pro-Roe position. Remarkably, there is a chunk of people (roughly 10% of the total) who are prohibitionists even though they do not even call themselves pro-life.

That's devastating, in part, to the opinion of three justices in Casey (1992), which cited public opinion (without identifying any specific polls) supporting Roe to uphold it. Turns out, society is evolving toward life, not choice. Take that underpinning out from Justice Kennedy's opinion, and you have 5 votes for vacating Roe.

That is indeed very big news for the pro-life movement.

More of the same from the GOP

The GOP is terrified of offending its base, so as it was after Timothy McVeigh blew up the Federal Building in Oklahoma City, so too does the GOP dive under their desks when confronted with this act of Right Wing extremism.

If the shooter were of the Muslim faith..

I think I would discover that I would be looking for safe refuge or else looking to duck for cover.

Has Randall Terry ever paused to ponder...

...the fact that chickens are the only animals we eat before they are borm, or after they're dead?

@Readerreader

Republicans in Congress will act to outlaw abortion when the day arrives when they need neither cash nor votes.

In the meantime, they are more than happy to keep Roe around as a bogeyman that, conveniently enough, brings in cash and votes from the gullible.

Gallop Poll is not accurate because of the manner the quesotions were asked. Frankly it looks as if most support legal abortion under Roe. Truth is most in the public is not very well educated on Roe v. Wade. The antis constantly present Roe as if abortion on demand is legal anytime during pregnancy. They know it's a lIE, but they would lose support if they told the truth.

Considering Roe balances the privacy rights of the woman with fetal development, within the trimester ruling, there is no reason to reform Roe. If anything we need to reinstate the health risks to woman in the third trimester. Considering the majority of abortions are performed in the first 8 weeks. Abortion under ROE seems to fall right inline with most polls.

We need to prevent abortons, by redcuing unplanned pregnancy.

This common ground. People like Randell Terry and OR encourage violence with their rhetoric and are a part of the problem, not part of any solution.

cowards

the Village is full of contemptible cowards who do not want to face what Tiller's murder means. He was a great man. They are pygmies. all of them.

And don't even get me started on Randall Terry. He's a man who should be eaten alive by karma. Who knows? Maybe he will be. It would be just, in any case.

I called this one a couple of weeks ago when Dobson said that the culture war was "lost."

Didn't he also say something along the lines that there was absolutely nothing within the law and the constitution that conservatives could do to halt the march toward Gomorrah? The unspoken but pretty obvious implication was that if there was nothing to be done within the law, then it was time for "family values" nutcases to go outside the law, and pick up their guns. Yesterday, one of them did. Congrats, Dobson, you own this one too.
