Suppressed images don't show rape, official says

The Pentagon says no sexual abuse, no Abu Ghraib photos among those held back in ACLU suit.

The letters thread is now closed.

Isn't this what Glenn Greenwald has been complaining about?

Isn't this article a prime example of what Glenn Greenwald has been complaining about -- allowing administration sources to present views anonymously that are friendly to the administration? Why should we believe what this anonymous source says about these images? If there's nothing new in them, then there's no reason not to release them to the public.

The American people need to know what their government has done in their name, even if it does put our troops in danger. We need to know the truth.

This story really bothers me.......

I realize that this story came out yesterday, but I just got to it today. (it's the end of the quarter, and I am grading papers, teaching introduction to psychology) I am an instructor of psychology at a local community college, and I am an incest survivor. I am male. I am very disturbed that information-truth-is being withheld from us. The textbook that I use in my classes is authored by Zimbardo, who was mentioned in a previous letter. I have been motivated by his writings, in the textbook and his other writings, that we do not give in to secrecy and lying.

We have an obligation-as human beings-to be up front of the inhumanities that have occured in the past. We do this so that it never happens again. Whether abuse occurs in an American home or an Iraqi prison, or anywhere else, we tell what happened and we pledge to not let it happen again. That is my perceived reason as to why Salon and others are writing to get the truth out.I am outraged that these pictures are being used to deny due process. I am outraged that the due process in place continues to be tripped up by so many things, such as politics, military leaders with their own agendas, and past political leadership that thinks it is okay to harm to find out the good.

These crimes do not go away. They reside in the souls and memories of the men, women and children who were abused and raped. I voted for our current president, and I am keeping a close eye on these proceedings. I am confused about how he and his staff are dealing with this issue, and I am also hoping for appropriate justice. As an abuse victim, I am having doubts. At the moment I am trying not to give up.

I really hate the attempts at covering up abuse.

the amazing Robbysh

Isn't it incredible how the right can twist and distort anything to justify it's criminally inhuman and deceitful behaviour? When it's John and Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King then it was just a deranged individual acting alone but when the right wants to pretend the war on terror is anything other than a neo con's wet dream then it's not a deranged individual acting alone. Then it's a conspiracy. But always remember: it's only a conspiracy if the right says it is. Obama should have checked with them first before he said or did a thing. They'll keep you safe. Just ask the detainees they've got locked up all over the world.

My dear nehark,

"Somebody must be holding that missing nuke over one of our cities. That's all I can come up with to explain this rabbit hole we've fallen into."

You think there is only one?

My dear RobbySh,

Relax, more U. S. Servicemen are murdered by other U. S. Servicemen and most of the murderers are Christians so it's ll good.

Do you have any idea how many innocent Moslems have been killed by the U. S. Military? Where is your sense of fair play? We owe the Moslems at least a million or so dead U. S. Servicemen.

Like they are going to be able to get anywhere near that amount.

BTW, have you seen how these recruiters go after naive kids? They will say anything to get fresh meat into the grinder.

Speaking of Iraq

Obama Silent on First Terror Attack Since 9/11

Those wondering how long it would take for the first act of terrorism to be perpetrated on American soil under President Barack Obama did not have to wait long. The murder of a U.S. military recruiter by a Muslim convert in Arkansas yesterday marks the return of the war on terror to America after just four months of the new Administration’s systematic dismantling of the policies and programs that kept the nation safe for over seven years under the Bush Administration.

Some may take issue with that characterization, noting the slaying of abortionist George Tiller by an apparently militant domestic terrorist on Sunday. President Obama certainly was quick to condemn that killing; and his Administration quick to take action to protect other abortion providers. Tiller’s murderer, though a cold-blooded killer, is not a terrorist of the kind that the United States has been fighting since the September 11th attacks. If every murderer were a terrorist, the United States would have to invade most liberal-run cities to put down the violence.

Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad, formerly Carlos Bledsoe, is, however, exactly the kind of terrorist that has been prevented from carrying out acts of violence against Americans, until now. Still, the president has not made a statement about the killing.

Obama has not expressed “shock and outrage;” has not offered condolences to Pvt. William A. Long’s family or Pvt. Quinton Ezeagwula, the other soldier injured in the attack; and has not expressed the nation’s resolve - to say nothing of his Administration’s - to continue to fight radical Islamic terrorists wherever they may be found.

To Obama, the Arkansas shooting was an isolated incident carried out by a deranged individual. It was not part of a worldwide effort to kill Americans with the aim of bringing the country to its knees. Indeed, the Administration cannot allow the attack to be viewed as such – even though we know that Muhammad was radicalized in prison, trained in Yemen, and was upset about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – lest Obama bear some responsibility for watering down the programs that could have prevented it.
