O'Reilly's campaign against murdered doctor

The Fox News star had compared Tiller to a Nazi, called him a "baby killer," and warned of "Judgment Day"

If the "Pro-Life" Movement Were a Left-Wing Movement...

Remember COINTELPRO? The FBI and local police departments used to send spies into organizations that had violated no laws and had no history of violence. Hell, they still do! The few violent left-wing groups, like the Weather Underground and the Black Panthers, were put out of business very quickly. Why is a right-wing group held to a totally different standard? While most "pro-life" people would never kill anyone, no honest person can deny that the cause attracts murderous fanatics who are encouraged by some of the more radical "pro-life" leaders. Why are we afraid to use the world "terrorism" to describe murders by so-called "Christians" who want to force their religious beliefs on others? Do we really think that only radical Islamists do this stuff?

Lastly, we have laws against "incitement to riot" (which were probably intended mainly to stop Wobblies and other labor organizers), but we have no laws against using the media (television, internet, radio, etc.) to solicit the murder of individuals. Remember "The Nuremberg Files"? If you say or strongly imply that someone should be killed, you know that there are plenty of disturbed people out there who will carry out your wishes. You need not ever meet the person or exchange any money. Isn't it time to update our laws?

Coward

Coward. O'Reilly blames Ludacris' rap lyrics for violence against women, but takes no responsibility if it's his comments that may have resulted in someone else's actions.

Sanctimonious, hypocrite, and coward.

O'Reilly is a terrorist sympathizer...

...or that's what right-wing neoconservatives would call him if he was a Muslim using the same kind of rhetoric with respect to the US and its policies. Should such a charge be levied at him, he will, without doubt, fall back on the First Amendment and freedom of speech - and yet how many times has o'Reilly not condemned mullahs for the same kind of talk that he exhibits here?

For those who won't take the time to educate themselves regarding late term abortions, such procedures are less than 2% of all abortions. They are, in the vast majority of cases, only done if the fetus has severe birth defects that would probably end in death should the fetus be carried to term, or the health of the mother is compromised to the point that she might die if brought to the pregnancy is brought to term.

I am, however, not surprised at the laziness of many anti-abortion ranters. It's so much easier to be ignorant rather than to make the effort to educate oneself.

As for the 60,000 late term abortions performed by Dr. Tiller as proclaimed by one of these posters, just where did you get that number? From some anti-abortion blog/rant? Considering that late term abortions are fairly rare, and only three people in this country do them, and there are, per the Guttmacher Institute, approximately 1.2 million abortions in the US per year, the number of late term abortions would be approximately 2400 a year. Which means Tiller might perform 1/3 of those, or 800 per year. That would mean he would have to have practiced medicine for 75 years to perform 60,000 such procedures.

Don't you people do any kind of reasoning before you write such tripe? Of course, that might induce you to think for yourselves - which would put such men as O'Reilly out of business.

Soooo, when you call Rumsfeld, Cheney, Bush et all war criminals........with all of your pseudo outrage at pseudo war crimes and pseudo "torture," ---

You will be real upset if someone inspired by you or Billy Ayers or Bernadette Dhorn assassinates one of them?

Right

@ mgkonyx

I do not dispute your numbers - thank you for pointing out a ridiculous amount like 60,000 late term or partial birth terminations.

My concern is the young woman who worked for me in 1989 who had three abortions in one year due to the fact that all were male children and she wanted a girl.

This is truly not made up - I still grieve for those little boys whose only fault was that they were boys.

It is my suspision that the vast majority of abortions in the land are for convenience and not due to endangerment to the mother, or from rape, or whatever other reason.

Let's face it, all of us are here because our mothers chose to deliver us instead of opting for convenience.

Of course because criminals deserve their day in court. Assassination, torture, and imprisonment without trial are apparently what conservatives now believe in.

The People Have a Right to Know

Does that sound familiar?

The unfortunate thing is that journalists promote their opinions now more than they report the news. If some nutcase translates the news or the opinion of a jerk like O'Reilly into violence, the fault lies with the nutcase alone.

Speaking of nuts, an alleged Christian who performed late term abortions was allegedly murdered in a Christian church by an alleged pro-life Christian. What part of that isn't nuts?

demand media reform

I firmly believe in protecting the constitutional right to free speech, including hate speech from groups like the Klan and anti-choice militants; however, I believe individual free speech is distinct from freedom of the press.

The state has an obligation to assure a viable free press because without it the entire American experiment will fail. The press is far too important to hand over, unregulated, to a few profit driven corporations. There is no reason we can’t have a constitutionally protected free press that is regulated to prevent concentrated ownership, political subversion, and commercial interests.

Fox isn’t the press; it is a corporate controlled outlet for the Republican Party that undermines democracy by defending government and corporate corruption. Fox misinforming the public and distracts from the real cause of Americans' declining standard of living and economic hardships: conservative economic policies passed into law without honest public debate. But in all fairness, the entire American press system has become corporate government collusion.

The license to broadcast is given freely courtesy of the taxpayers. Why are licenses awarded to pugilists who undermine the American people for money? Demand media reform, demand PBS funding, demand a say in who is awarded broadcast licenses.

We can have a free press owned by the people not a few corporations with the money and power to buy politicians and policy for their own self serving financial interests.

Thank you Salon for ethical journalism.
