Love this guy.

And kudos to the Der Speigel authors. I'm going to start spending more time over there rather than at silly-ass Salon. The Der Speigel columns are far better than most of the tripe from right wing hacks like Pagilla and Glenellen Walker, not to mention the hysterical, screechy Naderism of Sirota and Greenwald; and the utterly shallow and superficial misandry of Broadsheet.

Long live Mohamed ElBaradei!

I've always respected Mr. ElBaradei and the work he does. The fact that the degenerate, criminal Bush administration wiretapped him raises him even more in my estimation.

And, yes, the former Chickenhawk-in-Chief's "arrogance and ignorance" has turned the Middle East into "a giant mess."

THE FOOLS ON THE HILL

This brilliantly dissected article so aptly describes the fool hardiness of the Bush Team. The Bush foreign-policy dictated to by Cheney and Kissinger, (yes, the constant visitor to Cheney's cubby hole) was disastrous for the interests of our people. The most important questions still remains, after reading the article, "Why is Iran so mistrustful of America?"

One has only to know of our support and training in torture of the Shah's secret police, as well as the arming of Iraq in the Iraq-Iranian War. The grievances are infinite, yet Cheney's machinations acted and played the fool on the hill. Cheney's mad-man mentality truly gave "aid and comfort" to our enemies.

We need to PROMOTE Iran's nuclear ambitions

A fully nuclear armed Iran, ready willing and able to wipe out 'Israel' is the only useful counterweight. Hopefully within Obama's first term we will see this to its conclusion.

What Progress

Since the invention of the first atomic bomb by the Americans, the number of countries seeking and achieving nuclear capability has only grown. Not a single nation has agreed to disarm itself. I fully understand the desire of Iran and North Korea to have these weapons. It is their only guarantee against invasion by a superpower. I do, of course, despise these regimes, in particular North Korea. I believe Mr. ElBaradei and his organization are sincere and honest in their efforts to rid the world of nuclear arms; I only wish world leaders shared their commitment. As to President Obama, I do not think he is serious. His position, if he puts it into action, is politcal suicide. Americans love their nuclear arsenal. It works.

NeoCons and AIPAC'rs at der Speigel

Interviewers questions might well have been posed by a Likudnik or one of Liberman's facsists

@ MarkMac57

Actually, South Africa disarmed.

So why are they utterly unconcerned with Pakistan right now?

No Jews to hammer? No snarky bullshit to hurl at the US? In fact why did the IAEA absolutely ignore everything that Pakistan ever did vis a vis nuclear development of proliferation from AQ Khan?

We need to pour billions of foreign aid dollars into a rocket booster..

...powerful enough to carry a payload out into outer space...

..and then...

We need to take

Chicken Rangoon

And blast silly his ass

To the fuckin' moon.

Do it for humanity.

ElBaradei is a hero of our age, though largely unsung

Important interview, and one that should receive the broadest possible dissemination. The US botched an exceellent opportunity to keep the nuclear fuel cycle in Russian hands, so that the Iranian domestic nuclear power program offered no potential for diversion into military uses. That said, there is no evidence Iran even seeks nuclear weapons, and good reason to believe Iran is holding off in the recognition nuclear weapons would weaken their position. The focus should be on pressuring Israel to give up its nuclear weapons.

Der Speigel

This article about the My ElBaradei prompted me to check out Der Speigel. What struck me was the number of front page articles about contemporary right wing extremism and Nazis in Germany. They are universally detested. They were virtually annihilated in WWII. Yet they still exist and their sick dreams persist. The Germans seem to understand the futility of eradicating insanity. Instead, they have structured their constitution, laws, and government such that the insane cannot easily access the levers needed to facilitate their destructive ends. They have not forgotten, and so it should be no surprise that their front page today also mentions their resistance to Google street view, for example.

The ever-pompous US, however, the great country that won WWII single-handedly **cough**, refuses to even acknowledge how dangerous the level of contemporary right wing rhetoric has become. Dark times lie ahead, unless we are collectively able to confront the powerful fascist undercurrents swirling all around us. The Germans know that not even a great war can eliminate the insanity, and have structured their society in response. We're missing those checks, and we should be more than a little worried.

Sigh....

Mr. ElBaradei makes a whole lot of sense. And he is retiring. I hope he leaves behind people with equal patience and determination.

I've been reading der Spiegel ever since it introduced an english version. It has gotten even better since several other European countries contribute articles from their newspapers in English.

No Doubt

No doubt about it, ex-Dictator Bush and his regime created a real MESS for us that we will have to deal with for MANY years to come!

@Rodian re: Nazis

I know of know other race or ethnic group of people other than caucasians to have significant minorities of their populations who organized themselves around the call to racism and ethnic cleansing. The Nazis, neo-Nazis, KKK, Skin Heads, are all officially recognized organizations who's sole purpose and requirement for membership is the hate of others. It just fascinates me even more that they exist in countries wherein whites are already the majority of the population and wield overwhelming the majority of the power and wealth. In other words its not as if their existence is the result of having to live under some type of opressive regime wherin there was a need to organize to stand up for their rights.

I don't say this from a racially motivated perspective, after all I am of mix-race make up myself. I think there should be some studies conducted to ascertain why this happens. It really is quite peculiar. I mean racism exists in all societies to one degree or another but no where, except among caucasian societies, does it manifest itself in such an organized manner by people who are under no threat.
