World leaders may have struggled to reach consensus, but they did break new ground: Barack Obama admitted his country was responsible for the current crisis.

The letters thread is now closed.

I enjoyed this article.

It is a pleasure to read the blow-by-blow account of how such proceedings take place. Kudos to the writers.

What does he hope to gain?

Clinton: all Mexico's violence is solely our fault

Obama: all the world's economic problem is solely our fault

What to they hope to gain? Obama is selling the whole country at firesale prices.

Terrific article...

... very interesting. I can't ever remember before seeing publication of the discussion at a summit in such detail.

Remarkable...

Never in my 49 years have I heard a politician admit respeonsibility on an issue such as this. In my home and native land, all we ever hear is the blaming of the opposition.

Indeed, nice reporting, and there's something to be said about 'fessin' up

Really nice reporting. Enough play-by-play and analysis to keep people informed.

More interesting is Barack Obama taking responsibility. Nice to see our POTUS is a grown up but also a very smart man.

By taking responsibility he ends the divisive back-and-forth and takes ownership. Ownership is essential if you play to win, rather then play to avoid losing. Ownership gives you control.

One example of ownership is leverage over the bankers and AIGs.

This round wasn't the end-game but rather gaining traction to get to the next move.

Obama is a charmer

I would say Obama is a Charmer: He charms his way into the world.

His actions, interviews, statements, visits are calculated to charm the whole world except USA.

When it comes to dealing with the problems of the country he has sworn to protect and defend, he is just like Bush: careless, carefree, unapologetic, and defends EVERYTHING under state secrets.

During campaign, he swore up and down that he would open secrets of Bush regime, stop torture and open Bush memos regarding the same, be open in Government dealings, and increase employment.

His record so far is like Lindsay Lohan's. Much promise, but no results.

Read this and weep.

So in all, we have a elected a Manchurian Candidate who has sworn his oath to the fat cats, defending them while continuing to shovel out trillions of dollars of tax payer money to banks which will never return it back...

Good luck to you all. You guys hates Bush so much you elected Obama without knowing him well.

You all deserve this and more.

What will he take sole responsibility for today?

Global Warming?

Salmonella in the pistachios?

All Muslim on Muslim violence?

Bowing to that thug the Saudi King!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my God! I just lost ALL repect for this pecker-head "president", bower-in-chief, Obama. I notice that Salon didn't comment on Obama's bow to the king because it's against their agenda so let me bring it up.

This was pitiful and so utterly shameful, a president, OUR president of the greatest nation on Earth BOWING to this thug criminal tyrant shitbag king. What he SHOULD have done is put a .38 in the king's head at high velocity but NOOOOO, Obama BOWS like some kind of slave!!! Where was his waiter jacket. How about "...a thousand pardons, Sahib...". How about licking his big fat ass, Obama! THIS is HOPE and CHANGE!!!??? Anyone who voted for this dope is a bigger dope.

How many more days until Jan. 20, 2013? Impeach Obama now!

And while the State Dept

Has historically been a haven of pro Arab and/or pro Muslim nation sentiment, I believe at some point Obama will push his own Sec of State aside. It seems as if in some way Obama is attempting to BE the Sec State at the same time he is President. In any case I expect Obama to make pilgrimages to Caracas, Damascus, Tehran, Riyadh, Pyongyang and Havana this year. There are probably 30-35 more things he can find to accept responsibility and blame for.

Obama has already sold out the middle class

nothing like closing the barn door after the horses have escaped.

A rejection of symbolism

Obama used the technique of explicitly taking responsibility when some of his appointees were rejected for tax reasons, and again when the stimulus package met with less than full bipartisan approval.

All it means is, "to anyone looking for the political victory of assigning blame, congratulations, you now have your symbolic win. Now go away and let the rest of us who are looking to solve actual non-symbolic problems do their job."

Willingness to trade symbolic defeats for real victories, is a novel strategy for American politics, but it is definitely a strategy.

re: serafin

The United States has been kissing the Saudi king's ass for years, same with Israel.

We have gladly looked the other way as the Saudi royal family kills it's own citizens and treats them like serfs as long as the oil keeps flowing.

I don't think Obama's statement was quite fair

The crisis was caused by a handful of very rich and powerful financial criminals. Yes plenty of Americans were duped and lived beyond their means when it was offered as easy. But predatory practices were at fault.

I don't think it's fair of him, in his language, to blame me and other responsible Americans on the world stage for a few very evil, very powerful, very rich renegade criminals.

*(obviously it was a politically smart move in context, I just don't know if it's totally fair or accurate).

Tuesday, April 7, 2009 08:46 AM

Really?

...it is unlikely the spirit of unity that informed the summit can be sustained over a longer period of time.

If that's a description of the G20 when they're operating in a spirit of unity, perhaps the whole world is screwed.

Tuesday, April 7, 2009 09:55 AM

Seriously?

In a display of Asian wisdom...

Must the authors throw such stupid and racist language in the middle of an interesting article? I get that it was written to be a kind of punchy, blow-by-blow account, but that's no reason to rely on outdated racial stereotypes!

Impeach Obama NOW!

Once again Americans have been duped by the Established cabal.

And unlike 2000, this time the President was NOT appointed, but elected by a gullible public.

Since Obama was elected let us see what he done for the employed-lost-house-wife-divorced man on street:

1) Rode rough shod over Congress and Senate to shovel out Billions to Citi, AIG, JP Morgan, BofA and other banks, without demanding accountability. However, when GM and Chrysler came to town asking for money, he forced out the chairman of GM...

2) Refused to release Bush orders on law-violating torture orders.

3) Continue to stonewall ALL attempts to pry open his administration to public view while continuing to maintain his administration is more open by operating http://www.change.gov Not even Bush had the audacity to lie to face of the Public. Cheney must be aghast.

4) Continues to refuse to issue a presidential decree ordering large banks to start lending while threatening GM and Chrysler to declare bankruptcy.

5) Refused to issue a time table of pulling out of Iraq while stonewalling attempts by EFF and ACLU to find the true status.

6) Refuses to order the AG to file cases against corrupt bankers and AIG officials inspite of overwhelming proof against them.

Isn't this enough for you morons?

Bush was hated. Agreed. But he did NOT lie to the face of the public. Yes, he refused to lift a finger to help Katrina victims and refused to listen to the public about Iraq. But he was honest about it. He faced the public and showed his middle finger to them bravely. Yes, that was an abhorrent gesture, but atleast you got to respect his honesty.

The new guy has two faces: one for the gullible public, and the other towards his real masters.

My God, he is the worst of all: worse than Calvin Coolidge, worse than Woodrow Wilson The heartless, and much worse and Andrew Jackson (he broke the Bank: bravely).

I dearly hope in 2010 Democrats will be routed across the country so that Republicans will start the impeachment process.

Yes, i hate republicans, but in his case, i will continue to support them.

Rush Limbaugh was right when he wished Obama would fail.
