"RobbySh You are really out on a limb there and sawing it off behind you! You need to check your facts before you go spouting off. The Democrats were not in control of the Senate. The Republicans were."

No, RobbySh is correct. The GOP started out 2001 in control of the Senate. However, after he was not invited to a "Teacher of the Year" award ceremony honoring a Vermont educator, Sen. Jim Jeffords announced he was leaving the GOP to become an independent. This put the Senate in control of Tom Daschle and the Democrats. Many forget that Democrats controlled the Senate when that body authorized force against Iraq.

  • Greenwald is a scumbag

Groenhagen said: “Liberals such as the authors of this piece and the extremely dishonest Glenn Greenwald never acknowledge that the policy of extraordinary rendition began in 1995 when Bill Clinton was president”. Glenn Greenwald is about the most despicable individual I have ever run into. This bomb-throwing freak is a scumbag par excellence. When stupid and careless and juvenile men such as he get their way and do cripple our intelligence community and as a direct result thousands of not millions of Americans get killed I hope this dope has the decency to leave this country. What a slime bag. These lefties and liberals all advocate criminal trails for Bush and company...well it works both ways buster. Can a radical violence spewing hate-bag like Greenwald be tried? I wonder?

Hey Salon lefties...as your Messiah, Obama, screws up we will infiltrate these and other blogs and accurately point out your stupidity and criminal rants. Bank on it. Obama is the best thing that happened to the right-wing of this country.

  • Will the American people learn though?.

None of this is news, Bush and CO have been doing this almost since day ONE, after 911 it was full speed ahead. My question is not how could Bush and Co have done this as much as how could the American people stand by for so long until they did something?.

It seems as though the outrage was not until gas was $4.00 a gallon and the economy started to tank that people became really pissed off enough to vote them ALL out. To bad shredding the Constitution, Lying us War, Nepotism, was not enough on it’s own.

Where was the press the last 8 years? Not until quite recently did they actually start to question Bush and his thugs, just think if they had been doing their job right after 911 how much different things may have turned out.

    Where were the moderate Republicans?.

Frankly I do not trust the public or the press and dont beleive the system has changed, maybe it has but time will tell.

Now that Gaza is falling apart how many more pissed off Arab's has Israel created??.

Obama has one hell of a mess to clean up.

  • if not Bush, then who?

Jeez, conservatives: if Bush isn't someone who should be accountable for the last 8 years, what does political accountability even mean?

Fine, let's stipulate to all the qualifiers that Bush defenders are insisting on: Bin Laden was planning attacks before Bush took office; the collapse of the Minnesota bridge and the hurricane that hit New Orleans were not caused by George Bush, etc. etc. Even after all of those qualifiers are entered in the record, who held the highest office in the executive branch?

In other words, who ASKED FOR, and received (alas), the reigns of power and the public trust that comes with it?

Sure, there is all kinds of neglect and malfeasance all around. The voters have to bear responsibility for voting him into office--especially in 2004. But none of that mitigates the question of the accountability of the holder of the office of president.

Republicans with self respect and intellectual integrity are holding George Bush accountable for what he has done to the country, to the party, and to the conservative movement. Those who are unwilling to hold him accountable seem to be in the grip of something other than political thought and rational reflection.

  • Get real please

gkrevvv and the rest of you kool aid drinking nut jobs. Where the heck do you get your information? This forum is hysterical if not pathetic. Not only do you reinvent history but you say and believe irrational things. "9/11 happened because Bush didn't follow what Clinton was doing"? Where on earth did you get that from? Clinton decimated the military. Now Barney (There's nothing wrong at Fannie Mae) Frank wants to reduce it 25%. How about the aspirin factory that Clinton bombed or his retreat from Somalia? Or the inefficient (law enforecement) manner in which his adminsistration "investigated" the first WTC bombing? And let's not forget Jamie Gorelicks wall between the CIA and FBI that forbid them from sharing information. Or that Clinton could have captured or killed Bin Laden three times but chose not to. But of course if he did you guys would call that irresponsibly aggressive. Or would you?

The article blames President Bush for Katrina. Not just the federal response but the hurricane itself. And the insurance costs that went with it. Incredible. How about the democratic Mayor and Gov who were so completely incompetent in their response and incompetence in suring up the leveies even though they were given federal money to do so? Compare how Giuliani and Pataki handled 9/11 in NYC.

President Bush inherited "Peace and Prosperity"? The current Irag War (Gulf war ll) is actually a continuation of Gulf War l. For those uniformed who respect facts you might recall that Iraq invaded Kuwait and raped and pillaged it's citizens. We drove them out and back to Irag. A peace treaty was established that stopped us from going all the way to Bagdad at that time. Suddam Hussain agreed to curb his agression, let in weapons inspectors and disarm all WMD. Remember he had gassed and poisoned over 400K of his own citizens (Kurds). In the end he violated 17 UN resolutions by not letting the inspectors move about freely. Constantly fired on US and coalition planes patrolling the airspace around Iraq (as agreed in peace treaty). So please, let's not let the facts get in the way of your revisionism.

And regarding the economy, Clinton presided through the Dot Com bubble (smoke and mirrors) which burst in 2000/2001. Was brought kicking and screaming into budget reform by Newt Gingrich et al (Contract with America). Bush inherited the Dot Com burst and 9/11 right off the bat. After getting his bearings he led us through 6 years of the largest economic growth this country has ever seen. Economies are always cyclical, but the community reivestment act which force baanks to loan money to non credit worthy people at risk of loosing their FDIC charter coupled with incompetence and corruption at fannie mae (all Clinton appointees, see Gorelick) and yes some greed on wall street (they had to push this crap off to someone so they packaged and resold as derivatives.

I am a headhunter in NY. After 9/11 there were no jobs to fill for over a year. Currently, "in the worst econonic crisis since the great depression" I am working on million dollar openings having difficulty finding good people available. There are no gas lines as there were in the Carter adminsistration. And certainly no bread lines.

But there certainly is a whole lot of Kool Aid.
