Did I just buy an SUV? I didn't mean to. I am an environmentalist. Really. But before I knew it, there it was, in front of my house.

The readers of Salon.com aren't stupid. I'm sure most of us got the point he was trying to make. Personally, I found his flippant attitude about the issue annoying. His whole justification for the SUV seemed to be that he could get a good deal on it.

However, I think that you and he are onto something, that its pretty tough to live a green life in America. Most of us can't afford a Prius and a custom home with lots of green stuff (solar panels, etc). As you can see from my earlier post, even the most fuel efficient cars available today aren't all that efficient. Most of America is also not amenable to walking, biking, and taking public transportation anywhere. Most of us are just trying to keep our heads above water and have a decent life. On the other hand, unless our society changes in a large way, we are headed for environmental disaster. The idea that the American "way of life" and standard of living are sustainable is questionable. Its a real problem that I'm not sure anyone has any idea of how to solve. Its too bad Benjamin didn't write an article on that topic.

It would be great to see Salon.com hire someone like Bill McKibben to write on these issues. Benjamin is missing the mark.

  • So stupid

It has been widely reported that the sea ice is now at its most extensive in over 29 years and that 2008 was the 10th straight year that global temperatures fell. Global warming? Hardly! The anti-progress elements are loosing.

    Keep your SUV!

  • @Pete Kent

Year to year variations in average temperature or sea ice in either direction don't matter. Its the long term trend that matters. You are the stupid one.
