Meet the GOP's wrecking crew Why did a small group of Southern Republicans turn the auto bailout into a demolition derby? Introducing the senators who hate unions and love foreign cars.

  • THIS IS NOT RIGHT!!

Why were these same politicians SO free with 700 billion for Wall Street(elite America)but NOT so free with 14 billion for Detroit(mainstreet America)especially when reasonable, very do-able concessions were made by the UAW? Wouldn't it be GOOD for the Big 3 to climb back in the saddle making better, more affordable cars? Wouldn't that be good for America? Wouldn't that help create more intense competition between ALL the auto manufacturers thereby creating safer, better quality, yet less-expensive cars? Wouldn't that help retain and even CREATE JOBS?!

Apparently that's what these good ol' republican southern boys are afraid of, or as the article states, it's political payback, or both. Either way, it's pretty obvious that once AGAIN the republicans are NOT looking out for the good of the USA, but only for their own self interests.

  • Dear apologists: STFU

Giving BIG piles of taxpayer money to really, really big companies is high up on the Salon/Democratic agenda, huh? Amazing. And then to coat it in this faux sugar of populist drivel? Bawl elsewhere, please.

  • three words

fuck the south...next hurricane bail your damn selves out.

  • We are Argentina

or, we soon will be. In 1900 the per capita income of Argentina was more than the US. A country rich with minerals and arable land. Look at it now. What is wrong with a society that heaps ever more rewards upon ever fewer people, while the vast majority of its citizens who are hard working and eager, get less and less. This is nothing short of dismantling the fabric of American society. This is the same party that supports illegal aliens so that meat packing and hotels can use cheap non-union labor. This is the same party that cuts capital gains taxes so that investors pay less percent tax than salaried employees. Productivity per worker has increased over the last 8 years with all of the benefits accruing to the investor and executive classes. Meanwhile, the workers are told to take more pay and benefit cuts. You'all better electrify the gates around your executive communities because one day the masses will be storming!

  • @SEAL76

Iam going to enjoy taking apart your argument statement by statement.

The workers are overpaid and build products that of poor quality.

GM's CEO was paid $15.7 Million in 2007:

    http://www.reuters.com/article/businessNews/idUSN2534738420080425

This amounts to 77 workers getting paid @ $70 to work for 360 days a year, 8 hours a day.

Ford CEO, the wonderful Mulally got paid $28 Million for FOUR months on job.

    http://money.cnn.com/2007/04/05/news/companies/ford_execpay/

That amounts to $7 Million a month. Which amounts to paying 3300 workers @ $70 an hour every month.

And what did Mulally bring to FORD? $581 Million LOSS.

Unions keep poor performers on the line

Hmmmm. So what about the Board which keeps badly performing CEOs like Mulally on the line?

    Unions have outlived there usefullness

CEOs have outlived their purpose, since all they bring nowadays is losses to their companies, while holding manufacturers and other industries hostage.

Unions are also cash cows for Democratic politicians.

CEOs are cash cows for Republicans. Since 1990, auto makers have donated over $150 Million to Republicans. http://articles.latimes.com/2008/12/12/news/fi-gopcars12

And you know what's funny? For the money they paid Republicans, GM, FORD and Chrysler could not even get their bailout passed!! Talk about throwing away money! If they had paid that money to their workers, they would have got a better performing work force...

You obviously are from the South.

Why the heck we still have you morons in the United States, i can never understand!

We should cut you bozos off, and then when we have a sudden urge to invade any country, we can always invade Texas!!!

  • Boycott

There is a site, boycottalabamanow, through which anyone who thinks Shelby is a hypocrite trying to destroy unions and the Big 3, can send emails to him and the Alabama Chamber of Commerce telling them that you will not spend any time or money in their state as a result of his actions.

  • Auto Bailout

I thought the article by Koppelman & Madden was a wonderful example of convoluted thinking. Common sense is now a rare commodity & is certainly lacking in this article. I am informed that GM owes 63 billion. In my opinion due to incompetent management and self serving unions. How can an enterprise survive without radical change, which must include a reduction in compensation for every one. If not, the tax payers money will evaporate rapidly until the next donation is called for to save the Titanic. The so called"American" car is laughable. I had a Chrysler minivan, it was assembled in Canada, the engine was Japanese, the transmission was made in Mexico. It gave an unreasonable amount of mechanical problems. So for the first time I bought a "foreign" car ,a Toyota. It was assembled in Ohio of about 85% American made parts. I have had no mechanical problems in 3.5years of useage. It would be interesting to learn where the cars were made which the writers are driving. We peasants have to select what gives us the best value for our money!

  • YOU DON'T GET IT

None of you "get it." These guys are still fighting the Civil War and doing everything they can to starve the North out. Ask them about Katrina money and the expectation that hurricane money make everyone whole and then some. Nope, sorry, but it's no longer about relieft. It's about revenue.

And ask them about their share of other federal funds to keep their military installations pumping up local tax revenues. And ask them about ship building contracts, even though the ship builders build inferior products.

And aks them about if they took up a collection back in the 80's when good-paying union jobs left the Midwest and moved to North and South Carolina so the corporations could get out from under their labor contracts. Hell no, but today they are crying "foul" as those same mills send their jobs now overseas.

Nope, the South is still a mess. They don't see anyone outside themselves as Americans or deserving anything better. As a matter of fact, they will steal you blind if they get the chance.
